We head out in the dark looking for leopards but don't have any luck, so we head back to the lion cubs and film them suckling and playing. While we are filming the cubs, the cheetahs come to the waterhole to drink and are chased off by the lions. The lions all start roaring, then we follow the cheetahs across the plains. Back at camp we decide to empty the jerry cans to lighten the trailer and this turns out to be more difficult than it should be.
In this series we are on safari filming in Savuti, Linyanti, and the Chobe Waterfront. Savuti is part of the Chobe National Park in North-Eastern Botswana. It is famous for its lions and elephants. The Savuti Channel cuts through the area between rocky outcrops then empties into the Savuti Marsh. The channel is currently dry (and has not flowed for nearly 2 decades), but there are pumped waterholes for the animals, and the roots of the large trees along the banks of the channel can reach the water deep underground.

Filmed and edited by Robert Hofmeyr and Andrew Caldwell.
Behind-the-scenes shot on a GoPro Hero 10. For the telephoto wildlife shots we used a Canon 200-400mm f4 lens on a Red V-Raptor camera. Moving shots were done using a Red Komodo 6K with a Sigma 18-35 f1.8 or Canon 14mm f2.8. Aerials filmed using a Mavic Air 2s.

@@MovingPicturesAfrica great. We are heading there in September on our yearly African trip home to SA. My first trip there was in 1983 as a student in a Peugeot 303. Pretty rough in those days.

Beautiful scenes in this one, the light was gorgeous. Loved that bird chortling at you and your make-shift bush ways. You two deliver every time. Gotta get me one of those mega-torch flood lights.

I have never seen a lioness flirt like that before. And the male looked very shocked, almost not trusting her advances! 😁😄

Your footage of the lions is fantastic. One doesn’t see that very often from so close and out in the open. When’s the next trip?

Thanks Richard! Next trip is Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. We actually just returned from that but it will be a while before the editing is done.

Thank you very much. The torch is an Acebeam X80-GT. Very bright but you need to take the batteries out to recharge them, which is a bit of a hassle.

@@MovingPicturesAfrica It was amazing how much it lit things up. Totally agree with what you said about the spots lights when we did a night drive last year in Kruger.

This question always comes to mind with the vehicle leaving scenes: Who is assigned to run back and get the camera? Or do you just drive back? (The beard seems to be improving.)

What is the brand of that "Megatorch floodlight" you were using? Where did you buy it? I tried Googling for it, but to no avail...

Sorry. I always forget the name and just call it the mega-torch. It is an Acebeam X80-GT. Very bright. My only complaint is that you have to remove the batteries to charge them.
