That engine was worked on before & a shit job. Tell Chase that the cylinders should have no cross-hatchling in them. Honda CBR1000RR engine is an Alusil engine. The walls should be smooth. You'll have to buy the 0.25mm oversized pistons honda sells. Bored, honed to 600 grit & then an Alusil pasted to smooth out the cylinder walls to remove the aluminum & bring all the Alusil to the surface. Otherwise you're going to keep creating problems. You might as well go with the Wiseco pistons 1 oversized for a 13.5:1 compression since you guys are going with longer duration Cams. If you just put those Cams in you will lose torque & hp all under 9 to 10000 rpm, which sucks for daily riding. Bigger Cams without more compression robs the power from the bottom end & as it all up top, which is alright on the track. Anyway, y'all are still awesome for what y'all do for people, love the content, keep it up fellas.

Throw away bolts are usually called 'torque to yield'....look up: yield point, elastic limit, elastic and plastic behavior....but in a nut-shell, "torque to yield" means the fastener is tightened to the point where they actually stretch a small amount that won't spring back to the original length once they are loosened again....a little bit of stretch is permanent, so the bolt is damaged on purpose on the first use and can't be used again in a critical location like a bearing cap or crankcase half. The reason they are used is to get a reliable and accurate amount of tension or clamping force from the bolt. That keeps the clearances, bearing fit tolerances (including the shell's 'end crush'), and roundness of the bearing bores close to the way the bore was machined....

Pulling rods, I've always squirt a little brake cleaner or parts cleaner, to clear off oil and dry the metal, but only on one small point. This lets me use a Sharpie to mark the bearing housing and rod, so I know which way they will go back together correctly.

Hello Chase! Haven't watched you in awhile, but long time Limited Edition 2008 CBR owner who blew my engine 2 yrs ago. 2008 iteration was known to have oil burning defects, and many were recalled! Cheaper and more effective to source a used low mileage engine, I upgraded to 2016. 2012-2016 will work with existing wiring harness, plus fit and placement are exact. These are keys to making sure it will run with minimal effort. My new engine only had 4,000 miles and I purchased it on Ebay for $1,800. Finding a quality engine is the challenge! My long time mechanic charged me $790 to install, which included gaskets, plugs, etc. Total cost $2,590. Considered rebuilding existing engine, but buying replacement engine and minimizing labor costs, lead to less worries in the future. Engine is still running strong today with no issues. Also utilize the Honda CBR1000RR Forum, where someone may provide you with an existing engine and assist with the build. Resubscribed, and I'll be watching the later episodes. Good luck! 😎

Besides plasti-gauge (I always check plain bearings with plasti-gauge), a good test of bearing clearances is always the spin test - if the crank spins effortlessly - like a frictionless supersonic top - in the bearings, then it is probably all good. Any resistance means either a bearing is tight, or the bearing saddle / bore alignment is bad...that can happen too if the cases are machined badly or have warped. BTW - plasti-gauge might not show bad main journal bore alignment.....so the spin test is practically mandatory too....

Once was in a bike shop for tires and one mechanic brought one of the heads from a R1200GS he was working on. There was a 1" hole in it next to plug. The owner brought it in and said it started running rough when he was coming back from a trip. It had run ~100 miles interstate (70+ MPH) with that hole in the head. I'm glad my bill was for balancing a tire not for that repair. As for the this engine, all in, $4200 by the time it fires back up (without the head work).

FYI, all bolts stretch when tightened, that's what gives them their holding power and prevents then from loosening. It's call tension and it usually within what is called the "elastic" range of the metal. Meaning it will spring back to normal size/shape when the force is released. One use bolts due to their alloy and mechanical performance are so closed to the far end of the elastic range known as the "plastic" range, where the metal yields and does not return to it original shape. So the manufacturer does not want you to risk using then again and bolt not perform as intended. Peace.

The reason this engine failed is the 2008-2010 CBR1000RR had/have piston ring issues. That leads to high oil consumption if not check frequently. Engine runs low on oil and engine grenades. On my channel, I engine swapped a 09 CBR1000RR with a 2012 engine.
@AliasTekTV
@AliasTekTV 3 жыл бұрын
So just so everyone is aware of what happened, this engine looks to be ridden for extended periods of time at 12 o'clock (wheelie) or low on oil by lack of maintenance. By doing this you starve the engine of oil because the pickup tube in the oil pan (lower aluminum part of the case) is now sucking in air instead of oil. These engines turn over 200 times per second (233RPS at 14,000 rev limiter). It will damage bearings in a heartbeat as the oil film is vaporized from the intense friction and heat of the now metal on metal contact. The oil film barrier is about a human hair thick, when there is oil pressure being supplied, and as parts wear, oil pressure is reduced (pumps pump volume, pressure is the resistance to pump which is dictated by bearing clearances). The shattered clutch is prime suspect to the wheelie theory. Clutch-up wheelies are VERY hard on it and the rest of the drivetrain. Wheelies are fun, replacing engines aren't. So keep them very short or this could be your engine in short order. And CHECK YOUR OIL LEVEL.

Engine swap complete now ignition problems changed Crankshaft position sensors and a myriad of other things. Still figuring it out but I am determined to get this done. Per manual though bad ECM. What are the chances of that though? ECMs don’t usually go bad after you put a new engine in.

Did the valves not hit the pistion with rod that had too much play? I think thats lucky since the crank moving down will first have to pull away the play in the rod so the pistion stays up a bit longer which could be enough for the valve to hit the piston it.

Ive recently diagnosed my engine knock as blown connecting rod bearings in cylinder 4. Can I purchase bearings for one cylinder or do I need a whole set? Also how can I tell if the actual connecting rod itself is reuseable?

Usually, the bearings come in a set for all connection rods. It is best to replace them all at once. You should check if the engine was rebuild before and if you need oversize bearings. You need some special measuring tools to check the bores of the rod and also if the rod is straight. Look out for the following things: 1. Is there discoloration on the rod? If yes, the rod got too hot and the hardness of the material can be messed up. 2. Measure the bores of the rod(at the crank side and at the piston pin side) and check if they are within spec. Also, check if there are markings in the bores. A damaged bearing can sometimes spin within the rod and damage the rod itself. 3. Measure if both bores of the rod line up to each other(the rod is not twisted). It's not that easy if you don't have the right measuring tools. You should check the costs of rebuilding the rods by an engine builder near you. Depending on the type of engine it might not be that expensive. And you could also let them to some slight optimizations while they are at it, e.g., shot peening, balancing the mass of the rods.

Do you need to replace the engine case/crankshaft bolts for all motorcycles? I have an 05 r1, wondering if I can re use those bolts? Looking for a friend

Generally if a bearing shell stays on the journal when the cap or case is removed, that says the bearings have been overheated by seizures. In your case, probably from oil film failure, but it could have been doomed by improper bearing selection and engine assembly by the last person in there.....(Edit - most car mechanics, even really good ones, don't know bike plain bearings are select fit parts. So if this engine was assembled by someone like that, they would have probably assumed all the bearing shells are the same, and so randomly re-installed them. OK on a car, maybe. Death to your Honda, however) Bearing babbit melts at fairly low temperatures....it can 'weld' to the crank easily when overheated.....

Just so you know, atleast I know for Honda cars, they have the same bearing selection size as Brian described. I know this because I had to replace a rod bearing in my 03 Civic.

@@LamborghiniDriver19 Yes, Toyota and others use select fitments too, but I know a few 'old school' car mechs that were totally unaware they had to install the correct 'color' bearings in their bike engines....something you don't need with a small block Chevrolet, for instance.... I also know car guys that get really confused when they put their inductive timing lights on wasted spark engines, or a tach....."It's idling at 1600 RPM!", no, that is 800, just twice.....

Hope you guys replace the oil cooler. It will destroy the engine if you reuse it after an engine failure.

what i wanna know is what would happen if any of these things that brian has gone over actually broke the engine while on the road? does the motor just shut off? does the drive train seize? do you go hurling into infinity? what happens?

They could have had the crank lobe reground and run a .025 bearing

Why not add upgraded parts (crank, rods, Pistons) since they need to be replaced anyways.
