What makes a poem relatable? By examining how we have been conditioned to judge our personal stories as insignificant, poet Olivia Gatwood brings to light the value in the seemingly mundane, and its potential to connect us to thousands. Olivia Gatwood is a nationally touring poet, performer and educator from Albuquerque, New Mexico. As an advocate for Title IX Compliant education, Olivia travels nationwide, speaking at colleges, universities, middle and high schools, educating young people about consent, body image, sexism in the media, and poetry as a tool for social justice. Olivia's work has been featured on HBO, Verses & Flow, and The Huffington Post as well as Muzzle Magazine, Winter Tangerine, and Tinderbox, among others. She has been a finalist at the National Poetry Slam, Women of the World Poetry Slam, and Brave New Voices. Olivia firmly believes girl power, specifically that of teen girls, and has spent the majority of her career working to create spaces where young women feel validated, represented and empowered to exercise their voices. She is the author of Amazon bestseller, New American Best Friend. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. I’ve always admired her as a poet when she talked about seeing poets perform at 16 and them being like magicians that’s what she was to me and all of poetry club really and that’s why I joined but was and am still too shy to keep it going. Never stopped writing though (:

I love her. Even her talk is like poetry. Whenever she said 'this' I felt like she would start reciting the owl.

I think this piece is relatable no matter the age; Olivia Gatwood has a gift with that. I might be older, but this artist has definitely helped me along the way. Thank you, Olivia Gatwood.

Idk why the audience was laughing at the beginning poem, it was serious in my eyes but I guess it's up to their interpretation...love this talk though!

its serious but funny. like its the most serious thing in the world when ur a girl age 13 but then ur 21 and just like... wow we were kinda ridiculous huh but its not ridiculous at all of course, its just growth and a change in priorities and things that are "serious"

This sort of autoplayed/I'd clicked unintentionally and then the screen faded afterwards. Slightly freaky/suggestive of something more curious. There was lots that was potentially relevant and helpful right now.

Gatwood's poems are artistically awesome - but her basic premise is to conflate "Girlhood" and "shame". To me, that's corrosive.
