Glad to see you guys made it out. PINS is a beautiful, unpredictable and unforgiving place! Sometimes it'll make a mess of you, your gear, your confidence and send you home with your tail between your legs. The island doesn't always reveal itself. But if you're present at the right moment, it can be downright otherworldly.

My dad always said it would reveal who you really are and what you're made of. RIP Pop! When I die I'll have my ashes spread down there with his and we'll be fishing buddies again. Some of the best times and some of the worst times in my life were spent down there. My best fried Joey and I have been trapped there more than once by storms. It was 3 days before we could get out the last time. Hell, It was winter and cold as f&%k! That wet cold just chills you to the bone. "Unforgiving" is a perfect word for PINS! I tore the front end of my truck up this last trip in June. I have no idea what I hit but I hit something pretty damn hard! I quit drinking years ago too so alcohol had nothing to do with it. My mechanic said he'd never seen anything like it before. But the whole front end was broke loose and shoved over to the right and I drove all the way back to Austin, effectively turning left just to go straight! But it's all welded back up and seems to be fine now. It's an 08 Tundra and it's been the best pickup I've ever owned but parts can sometimes be expensive. That's the reason I opted for welding it vs. replacing the broken parts. $5K for the parts, if I remember correctly. He charged me about $500.00 to repair it. And I love that 5.7 V-8 too! Man, that thing is a beast, especially in "tow" mode! People complain about the fuel mileage and I always just shake my head. How do people think horsepower is made? You have to burn fuel to make power, you know?

I grew up camping and fishing down there. I'm from Corpus but I live in Austin now. I still go down for a week a few times a year but at 68, I'm feeling my age these days and it's getting harder to do. Erosion is making that beach smaller and smaller too. Years ago there were 2 roads, a high road and a low road. Now there's just one road and at extreme high tides, sometimes no road! I was last there in June and the Turtle Patrol was out in full force. 10 MPH speed limit when the turtles are nesting and they enforce it. I hear that's an expensive ticket. Years ago we swam our baits out and nobody even had a kayak until the late 80s. I'd drown now trying to swim out past the 3rd sand bar but when I was younger it wasn't a problem. It was spooky at night, swimming out there dropping baits but after consuming enough "adult beverages", well, it was still spooky but I figured at least I'd probably not feel it. Kayaks changed everything! And hey, if you find my prescription sunglasses I lost in the Gulf in June while wade fishing on the first sand bar I'd love to have them back. I lost my damn IPhone somewhere down there too. That was an expensive trip! I hope y'all enjoyed fishing Texas and maybe I will see you down there one day.
