In the mid-1960s, milk bars were common as a means of offering cheap meals to people working in companies that had no official canteen. They still served mostly dairy-based and vegetarian meals, especially during the period of martial law in the early 1980s, when meat was rationed. They became small, inexpensive restaurants that took advantage of PRL nostalgia, while providing good quality food and customer service. Due to their good locations, milk bars often fall victim to gentrification and are defended by activist groups. Today milk bars are privately owned, but partly subsidized by the state, which allows it to offer low prices.

Thanks for sharing Meru and Sylwia. Brings back fond memories of my stay at Warszawa almost 10 years back. What a beautiful city it is now. While I was there, I stayed at an area close to Warszawa Central and I loved every bit of it. We used to shop at Carrefour Market (French Supermarket Giant) similar to the D-Mart of India, the prices were affordable and it had everything. You can never find people begging for money in the streets. The city was clean & tidy and it was safe to travel anywhere, though there were odd cases of racism from drunk locals angry about the foreigners (Esp. Indians) working there and stealing their IT jobs. Much of the city was destroyed in World War II, but the hard-working Polish people have rebuilt the city from the ruins into a vibrant, safe, clean, and modern city with a well-developed infrastructure. The Yellow Trams are the highlight of the city and along with the buses, they provide awesome connectivity to various pockets of the city, much like Mumbai.
