To test for silver on that spoon you can spit on a piece of tin foil (I know, a bit gross!) and rub it, and if it smells like rotten eggs or starts to go shiny then it’s silver. Thank you so much for sharing your adventures with the world. I don’t know why your films bring me so much joy, but they really do. I live in Oakland California, in the San Francisco Bay Area. Collecting artifacts is generally frowned upon, either because it may disturb delicate ecosystems or because it’s disrespectful to remove cultural artifacts of the native communities whose land this was. So instead of mudlarking, I collect the little treasures I find gardening in my own back garden. We have a tiny Museum of Backyard Archaeology in our living room. I’ve got a magical collection of things from the past, which I just realized is shockingly dusty.

A crafty use for old forks. For creating cheese lables for a cheese board. Using the tine end to stick into cheese or make a point down from the handle, fold the handle back and using metal stamps, stamp in the names of cheese types.

My late wife was truly a precious metals savant. She could tell you if the piece was gold, silver, platinum, (even unmarked pieces) or if it was plated.
