This year, we grew over 100 new varieties of plants. In this video, Heather counts down the very best tomatoes and pepper varieties and explains what makes them stand out. We also share which tomatoes failed the test.

Same for me on San Marzano!!! In the last two weeks I've pulled off 30-40 rotten ones from 3 plants. The plants are grow in the same soil as several other tomato plants, same watering, and same fertilizer schedule and it is the ONLY one with rot!

I grow a lot of different tomatoes every year. I totally agree with you on the Pineapple tomato they are delicious. One that I really like is a tomato called Biltmore. It comes from the Biltmore estate. Medium sized on a smallish plant with a fantastic taste.

Huge fan of sunsugar cherry tomato, the improved sun gold with less cracking if it rains. Also love oxheart and caspian pink for large tomatoes with low acidity Granadero is a great large paste tomato with smooth skin I can't grow San Marzano either! I think they need the volcanic ash to taste as they're meant.

Thanks everyone for talking me out of marzanos.last year I had around 20 varieties . Beefmaster, big boy, pink brandywine and purple Cherokee tasted best. The hybrids cranked the whole season. Heirlooms died. Yellow pear was for the birds. Done with cherry types too much picking a big ol beefmaster tastes better anyway. Good luck everyone.

I agree the Pineapple is a very good tomato, we grew them last season. Please try making salsa with them along with your #1 pepper. But still my all time favorite is the Celebrity Hybrid F1 tomato(det) also a 1984 All-America Selections(AAS) winner. Celebrity and Pineapple will be in our garden for life, they are fantastic. I'm hearing good things about the Red Snapper Tomato, heavy yields and extra large fruit supposedly. Gonna give them a try this season.

@@BearBottomAcres I think if we had a nice summer they would be ok. The first summer here was nice and sunny. It just depends I guess. Last year was bad. Mosquitoes were worse than usual too because the winter wasn't as cold as usual. I'm going to try from the greenhouse when it's up and hope for a not so rainy cloudy summer. It wont stop me trying. San Marzano tomatoes require a bit of 'neglect', high temperature, and poor soil. If you are a grower who 'tends' their plants, then San Marzano will be quite unhappy (and not develop either its firm fruit nor sweet taste). It comes from the slopes of Mount Vesuvius where it is mineral rich, but 'compost' poor. We had two grow as 'volunteers' in our garden in Denmark this summer (seeds that had obviously survived the composting process!) and with no watering, no feeding, and dreadful drought conditions they produced the most beautiful fruit. Lesson is that to get the most out of any variety you have to understand the context in which they come from. Just planting a bunch of plants next to each other and feeding and watering them in a similar way will not bring out their individual qualities - beginner error. But I do expect that you took that into consideration in this test, and indeed grew your plants differentially.

Pineapple tomato just gets wrecked by disease. Very poor immunity. It may be delicious, but I’ve never gotten to eat one due to disease hitting the plant so hard. The Indigo Apple is the current star of my garden. Very delicious. Healthy plants. The San Marzano are a staple in my garden as well. More of a canning-type. Black Krims are good as well, but you lose a lot to disease and rot. The tops tend to cork and split ... which leads to bad things. Also have Pink Ponderosa (TBD), Brimmer (TBD), and Atomic Grape running this year. Atomic Grapes are strange. Pretty good, but not GREAT flavor. Hard for the rookie to tell when they’re ripe as they’re ripe by feel, not color ... and the inside stays greenish regardless of ripeness. First 2 are yet to be determined. Grew Black Beauty last year as well, but not this year. As delicious as they were, it didn’t make up for the FOREVER-taking to ripen, the difficulty in telling if they’re ripe, etc. Plants themselves were really hardy though.

@@bbtruth2161 One thing I do with my maters. I will separate out the orange/yellow/bi-color from the red and do a batch with just those. It is the same recipe I always use, yet a noticeably different flavor to the sauce. a 'deeper' smoother flavor. (I can get bored doing (and getting) the same over and over, so this changed it up just enough.) Most years I am overwhelmed by maters (that is NOT a complaint ;) )

The Siberian tomato variety does not exist. There are about 2 hundred varieties from the Siberian Altai region from the Altai Seeds company and another 3 hundred varieties from Minusinsk. A tomato festival is held annually in Minusinsk. The record has been officially confirmed by the Interrecord Record Registration agency. The winning tomato weighs 2 kg 270 g and has a circumference of 57 cm. He was raised by horticulturist-blogger Natalia Shcherbinina from Minusinsk. For the record, she used the tomato variety "Minusinsky large". Tomato varieties from Minusinsk weigh from 500 g. and these are not the small ones that you showed.
