We talk through our unexpected experience at a Greek cruise port while on Celebrity Cruises last week and how we ended up at a Brothel. Are cruise passengers adventurous travelers? Should you take the advice of locals at cruise ports abroad? Should you experience the local customs and culture while in another country as a tourist? What do you do when you don’t know the language when traveling to another country? Is international travel safe? This is the latest cruise news in tandem across the cruise industry where all cruise lines are making cruise cutbacks for cruise passengers onboard cruise ships during 2024 and we were surprised by what we got ourselves into while at a Greek Cruise Port! What do cruise ships do with passengers who are not aware of their surroundings while at port? How do Cruise Ship Crew handle these naive cruise passengers? Are cruise ship passengers okay with cruise lines going to unique cruise ports and experiencing local cultures? We talk through our verified experience on shore of the Celebrity Infinity Cruise Ship and could happen cruise ship fleet wide onboard all Celebrity Cruise Ships including the largest cruise ship Celebrity Ascent, Celebrity Beyond, and smallest cruise ship class Millenium Cruise Ship Class. This could happen at many European cruise ports whether on Celebrity’s Biggest Cruise Ship Class, the Smallest Cruise Ship Class and every Celebrity Cruise Ship in between. What are your thoughts in our inside cruise chat on the unexpected experience while at port on our Celebrity Cruise Ship 2024?

You must have laughed all the way back to the ship. Giggling every time you look at each other. Have you looked at each other and asked "do you need anything else??" Wink wink. My husband and I would still be laughing years later. 😂

sometimes American's get drugged late at night so they can be robbed. The guy who sent you there would get a commission. You were super lucky that did not happen. Do not take suggestions from locals at night in other countries. They will tell you what you want to hear and usually have ulterior motives. You were lucky. Be safe.

Depends a lot on the country. I've heard of those things happening in Greece, but not, for example, in France, Spain, or Portugal. You can get robbed there, but it's more like pickpockets, car break-ins, or muggings.

Something similar happened to me in Bangkok. I had arrived there one evening dropped my bag in the hotel room and wanted to go out and see The town. I approached the doorman and asked him to arrange a car and driver for me to see the town: Bangkok by Night. Well, the driver took me to this place on a side street and suggested that I go in and see the club. So I go in and there were a dozen beautiful girls sitting on risers behind plate glass. Each girl had a number. So I assumed I was in a house of prostitution and chuckled and walked out. I told the driver this isn’t what I had in mind so we drove off and saw a couple of sights and again he turned into an ally and told me to go in and check this club out. Same thing. While I was glad I had seen these luxurious houses of ill repute, I had enough. So I told the driver that I was hungry for something else: dinner. I told him I would be honored if he’d be my guest and he took me to a floating restaurant and we had the best dinner. We had a great time, and he apologized for wasting my time earlier in the evening. I told him it wasn’t a waste as I had never seen anything like that before.

1973. My husband was based in Thailand during the Vietnam conflict. He had a night in Bangkok waiting for a flight to the US. He and a friend were directed to a similar establishment. As with you the type of work there eventually dawned upon them. I learned the story the following day. He entertained myself and a labor room of attendants at the hospital while waiting for our son to be born. His descriptions of people were more “military” and less media appropriate than your description! Your story brought great smiles to me.

He had a blue jacket with Senior Navigator Wings and the Vietnam conflict ribbon. Time had changed and he was pleased with folks who responded as you did. Thank you for recognizing the service of years. Are you a Civil War historian?

Wow, that's crazy. When I was younger, I was in Bogota, Colombia and was approached by several men who in broken English kept telling me I was cute. It was creepy so in the future I walked around with a guy from our group. We passed an old lady sitting in front of her store with her walking stick. As we walked by, she hit me in the rear and was yelling at me in Spanish. I had no idea, but was later told because I was walking alone with a guy, she thought I was a prostitute. From then on, we walked with a group. Welcome to not understanding the customs of Bogota.😂

The problem is not Bogotá is where you were and walk around. Sadly as many other world capitals, Bogotá have some zones called “tolerance zone” where prostitution is legal, or lgtqb+ areas. If you where in an specific area of Chapinero that is a lgtqb area and there is a lot of prostitution too.

Many decades sgo, I had an experience in NY that made me much more careful when I travel. I went to an afternoon show in the theater district but it was dark when it finished. I turned the wrong way on a street I can't remember and headed south. There were lots of people around so I felt safe but gradually, they all disappeared and I was alone on the street. I was at 33rd St which at the time was a very dangerous drug area. Luckily a cab came by and I got out of there. It was a good lesson. Even in cities you think you know, be aware of your surroundings.

Ha ha. When I was a college student near the Canadian border, my girlfriends and I took a bus trip to Montreal. We were poor students so we asked the bus driver to recommend a cheap hotel for the night. It was late at night. When the old brownstone entry was opened, an older lady in a house robe greeted us in French, and immediately started stroking my friends fishnet stocking (they were in style mid '60's). "Odd". There was no check-in desk. The woman just asked us how long we were staying and asked us to pay her in cash. "Odd" again we thought. Then we noticed couples going up and down the ornate Victorian staircase without luggage. All night we heard people coming and going from the other 4 or 5 bedrooms. They were only staying for an hour or two. FINALLY we got the message and left as soon as the sun rose😄

I lived in Germany for four years over 20 years ago. When I first moved there we had to go through two weeks of indoc where we would learn about the area, the culture, common phrases & things like that. They also told us to be aware of establishments that have “bar” in their names because they aren’t bars as Americans think of when we see bar in the name. Sometimes it was obvious like in Frankfurt where the women would be standing on balconies trying to wave guys inside but other times you had to be really careful because it was easy to mistakingly walk into one of those places.

Funny story! Really funny how it took you so long to figure it out. 😂 I'm just glad you were safe.

Wow! Hilarious! What a great story, although I'm sure shocking, but very funny. I am not a world traveler, or rather its been a very, very long while since I've been overseas so I have not ended up in any strange places, but that is definitely a thought I recently had bc I plan to visit overseas soon. I'm glad you both were safe. I am reminded with experiences like this that you can't always know or be prepared for everything, some naivety is expected. Thanks for sharing!

Good suggestion about researching first and doing due diligence. But can I just say, hahahaha!!! I would have loved to be a fly on the wall at that establishment while you were there. 😅
