ABOUT MICHELLE
Michelle Visser is a homesteader in rural New England. In their 220-year-old farmhouse and on their 14 tree-filled acres, her family makes an effort to live life a little more simply by growing some of their own food, raising a few farm animals, and making their own all-natural maple sugar. Michelle has been featured in Whole Foods Magazine, Capper’s Farmer, Hobby Farms, Where Women Create Work, and Mother Earth News. Michelle’s award-winning website, SoulyRested.com, her popular podcast, Simple Doesn’t Mean Easy, and her print book, Sweet Maple, tell the story of her family’s connection to the past on their small sugar farm. Michelle has been a guest chef at Northeastern’s Xhibition Kitchen, and she offers presentations across the country about the science behind the syrup and the secrets to making delicious, maple-infused recipes.

These are so great! I am a teacher by trade and really find it challenging to let my kids "do" things that are educational but not directly in the curriculum.

Re-selling videos do really good on youtube, and if she lists her ebay store or where she lists, her subscribers will buy from her too! I did re-selling.

How do you feel about discouraging things you're pretty sure won't be profitable? Do you let them try and find out for themselves? Or save them the disappointment?
@MichelleVisser

Instead of letting them waste months and months of time on something I'm pretty sure will be a mistake, I might spend a few solid days helping them work through a detailed cost-benefit analysis and maybe even writing out a (very simple) business plan. I'd spend lots of time talking about it with them about it all and maybe help them come to a conclusion of a different plan that might be more worthwhile. BUT having said all that I will say there are definitely appropriate times to let them have free reign and see what they come up with and what they learn.

I disagree with siblings wanting to be charged for helping out family. You should want to help because you love them not too squeeze a buck out of everyone every time you are involved in something. As one gets older that may change. This money before everything culture ist nicht gut.

I don't. You should pay people a wage if you are earning money and asking them to help you. That's basic economics.

we were never an allowance kind of family and we always encouraged the kids that we all had certain jobs to do as part of the family, helping each other and all pulling our own weight
