The house renovation sage continues and this week we're moving on to the flooring!
We decided to install porcelain tile floors with a wood look because they're durable, easy to clean, and it seems to be what most people opt for here in the countryside. We chose these beautiful tiles that look like old wooden boards of a seafaring ship - very rustic, warm and cozy.
After 6 months of renovations, this was a very exciting next step and things started off well enough...until they weren't.
So join us in this episode as we begin the floor installation and also pull the floors back up. Oh, what an adventure it's been!

Your dad is 100% correct. Whomever installed those tiles did not know what they were doing. It's just bad work and I've never seen anything like it. But stay strong. All of this will pass and it's a great lesson. Once all of this is done, you will have a great place to call home.

I'm so glad you have your dad there to help, as he reminds me of my father, who was also in construction and would have never tolerated work like that. Unfortunately, my father is no longer with us, and we bought our house a few years ago so we are flying blind.

My late dad also understood what it meant to renovate and build. Never cutting corners and being hands on . We feel for you guys. Your dad and my late dad were mirror images. Harriet and I made many mistakes in our build. We learn from them and you will too. We can remember many times when we were not site . Corners got cut. We are not perfectionists , however we want the work to be of the standards of that trade. As you know when you're not there. Sh......t happens. And even when you're there , workers have in their own mind to work another way not to your liking. Sometimes the quality of the work even when you're paying top dollar doesn't measure up. You end up doing much of the work yourself. Harriet and I would consult with experts in their fields of expertise and even use KZfaq to help in things we knew nothing about. It's never easy. It's not something we signed up for. Guys, you will move on from this and be better for it. Hang in there, you will get to the brighter side as we did. Sending much love💕💕 Harriet, Jim and Yuki Richmond, Va. Currently in Portugal.

So sorry you have to deal with such a shady job... when i saw how messy the job was, i knew the spread of the adhesive would be uneven :( but when your dad lifted the tiles and show that it wasn't even spread with the right kind of trowel.... that is so clearly the job of someone who has no idea of what they are doing. I think it's great that you are all keeping a great attitude, we live and learn, but i hope luck will be on your side for the futures steps. We started following you for your travel videos, but we're quite fascinated by the construction content! Good luck !

I don’t know where to begin… the property damage and man/women labor needed to complete your place is overwhelming, so bothered by seeing like your father mentions feeling upset or “fuming’” from the floor installation nightmare… the outside is just an eyesore, all around… I encourage you guys to get a church and connect with some American high school missionary programs that can help and provide you assistance for free, they would wipe out a lot of the landscaping or painting for free. You guys have a positive attitude, the house is constructed so bad that I think that you are going to have endless expenses to fix or renovate constantly… stay strong, don’t let the random out of nowhere continuous expenses stop your dream. Fuerza! Saludos from San Francisco Bay Area, California.

Good decision to get some different more competent tile installers. When my porcelain tiles were installed they didn't use plastic levelers - just separators. If I recall correctly, the floor just needs to be flat. It is a bonus if it is level also. One thing you do NOT want to do after you put tile down is have an incompetent foundation person raise up your joists (that might be sagging) in your basement or crawl space AFTER you've put down tile unless you want grout around the tile cracking and loosening over time. In my case, if the foundation "expert" (who was a mediocre handyman) had known what he was doing, he just would have put a support under the existing sag just to prevent it from sagging more.

Not sure which was Audrey's dad more upset about - incompetent workmanship or shoddy work while having the audacity to be charged premium prices. And, needing to have a tooth pulled and missing out on making BBQ dinner probably didn't help matters either .

It's more the norm in Argentina - many workers don't give a shit. There are structural reasons to be sure (e.g. economy, etc.) but it's also cultural. Bottom-line it's very difficult to find good talent you can trust. We rehabilitated a condo in MdP and it took a year and a lot of tears and rework. We have similar stories.

They'll also say they "need a box of screws" and then use 3 and take the rest (unannounced of course). That's if you're lucky. If you're unlucky they'll put in 3 random screws and take the whole box.

I live part time in Costa Rica and had tile work done in my condo. The guy was just a young Nicaraguan, but he was amazing. He used a grinder to cut 45 bevels for the wall and holes around pipes. No need for metal edging like we do in Canada. I’m sad to see the problems you are having, but that can and will happen. The uneven tiles are ridiculous and the messy work makes me think they don’t really know what they are doing because the cleanup is going to be crazy. Your poor Dad. Frustrated. I don’t blame him.
