My theory is because it sat presumably unplugged for an extended period of time, cell voltages became imbalanced. The car has been measuring current out of the pack during the drive home and is calculating SOC based on theoretical remaining energy. But the BMS steps in when at least one cell gets too low to avoid damage and shuts the party down despite there still being energy left in the pack. Leave it plugged in for a couple of days and then see how low of a SOC you can get to.
@DocNo27

Yup - they just need to leave it plugged in for a few days and then cycle the battery again. It sat for a year - what the heck did they expect? Good youtube content!

This. One of the cells self discharge rate is higher than the others. Probably used 2nd hand lithium batteries for cost cutting and didn't match the cells with similar internal resistance to each other. Prius's will do this same thing when a cell is on its way out and sits for a little while.

There is definitely a market for sub 10K new, very simple EV's like this. As long as it can go 80-100 miles using full capacity and at least 55MPH, it would be an actual good city/suburb car if you didn't have reliable or safe public transport. You can get a used leaf for that price, but the range can degrade severely on some of those since they were air cooled nickel/cobalt based batteries.
@baronvonjo1929
@baronvonjo1929 9 ай бұрын
I honestly don't think there would be much of a market. Not big enough to justify production with such small profits it surely has. It's styling would never have widespread appeal, its a unknown brand, it looks and would feel dangerous regardless if it's safe or not, I feel like this is a city car but most Americans don't spend all their life on a city and I wonder how you would keep it charged. I don't think you could have a charging cable across the side walk or that a apartment complex would let you install one. But idk. Maybe it would do well.
@Josh-179

If it is LFP, the voltage doesn’t change much over the discharge cycle so it is possible that if it sat a long time slowly discharging the BMS didn’t know the true state of charge of the battery and it just ran out of juice and just needs recharged and recalibrated. But that’s a wild guess, and it could be anything.

I don't understand why America doesn't have any budget cars. In South Africa there are a range of brand new cars (real cars, not whatever this dinky quadricycle is) for 8-9k. And they are decent cars with all the essentials like adaptive cruise control, reverse camera and the like that you don't seem to get with 20k cars in America. Not to mention they're from reliable and established brands like Suzuki

Severly underpowered and Suzuki left the US market I believe in 2011/2012. Americans do a lot of long highway driving, Europeans and Africans do more city driving so the vehicles there have less power.

8-9k woof, in Europe we don't get that. To be fair, a lot of crash testing, abs, and other BS added. But also a lot of stuff that make them pretty expensive. In America small cars only do well when the gas prices are insane. The roads in America are just build for big as SUV's and huge trucks. Look at an average town how big the roads are and how little the other users get. So very different markets, small cars just don't do that well. A budget car in the USA also tends to be a midrange car in Europe.

you will need a sticker on the rear to make people smile like the small fiat available here in the eighties like Fiat Panda the crazy car as Fiat had it advertised, which was a box shape car if you check it out. I bet the BMS was misaligned after a year of sitting and then you need to charge and drive then. It needs to recalibrate like the early tesla model 3 with LFP batteries from china when it was new and no one knew about. And maybe the manual and hotline might offer also new insights what to do. The same happened to a Renault twingo electric in 2022 on a german highway cause the car said 11% SOC and then died on the highway, has been towed 2 km to the charger and then it worked fine again. That has been a press car. Now you mentioned the BMS, where inside usually is also a coloumb or energy meter which needs also calibration like any new golf nowadays after a 12V battery swap which is achieved by swapping in a full battery and then set a new serial battery number via odbc adapter . Yes, that sounds weird, but a new serial number never been used before tells the car that it has gotten a new 12V battery and from there it does count the energy going in and out . This is nothing new, cause it has been introduced when the start stop automatic went into cars to save gas. It avoid in the morning after a start that the start stop would turn the engine of if the battery is too low. This whole system is based on a shunt measuring what goes in and what goes out. It should not be broken, just needs a full charge and a reset of the bms or the energymeter aka coloumbmeter which is a remaining capacity counter. Good luck, this will be a fun car - remember the days you climbed that pike somewhere with an e-GOLF if I remember right ? That was easy but will be far more challenging with such Candy car.

In the early 2000's I purchased an electric car. It was called the NAP 3000. It had a 48V lead acid battery and a 3000W motor mounted to the rear axle. It looked like a Smart car. It would not go over 30mph. I converted it to 72Vdc(still lead acid). It would go almost 40mph for about 15 miles. It was a Chinese piece of garbage made to look like a real car. I cut it up with a sawzall and took it to the dump. I use the batteries for my solar energy storage.

Oh, the car the IIHS didn't certify. If it would have been certified it would have been interesting to see what this car could have done in the actual open market. Many states currently dont allow these type of cars to be used on the roads outside of neighborhoods( called a neighborhood car/ aka golf cart ). Believe the major problem was the airbag system.

My Rav4 Prime almost gets that EV miles with a similar sized battery which is a head scratcher to me given it weighs twice as much since it also has an ICE engine for long trips adding another 450 miles of range! 😛😛

I wonder if you need to cycle the battery a few times (charge, discharge, repeat) before it has full capacity use. Some batteries in the RC hobby are like that.
