They basically are. In fact, I even saw a site that sells them as golf carts. They aren't $1000, though, because the importing, storage, and shipping costs add thousands to the cost. It actually gets to the point where might be better off just getting a UTV and making *that* road legal

No way would this project go well as the professors that judge the projects would immediately spot the glaring issues with this car and tell you to redesign everything. I would probably rather get an electric bike instead of this car for the same price, at least then you would get a couple of quality components.

Not unlike most "modern" golf carts, which btw cost ten times as much... Most still have DC motors, still use lead acid batteries, still use drum brakes on often only on one set of wheels, still do not feature independent suspension, the list goes on. And as said, the run 10x that price of this Chinese car and are quite popular in lots of communities.

So, he is misleading everyone by talking about the batteries. In fact it doesn't include batteries for that price quoted. You can order it with WHATEVER batteries or brakes or whatever you want, because they are designed to have many applications. The base batteries are lead acid but you can order lithium or just put your own in once it arrives. Also, you can get models around the same price that are AWD and have more power.

I love your video about these low-budget DC vehicles. Your information is very accurate and true. I have been in China for 5 years, and I had a 48V 3-wheeler cart that was my car for 2 years. My wife has a Honda Fit, and I get to drive it once in a while. I just wanted to add regarding these vehicles - (I saw Electric Sway's comment, and the golf cart comparison rings true), the motors for these cars are the same rating as the ones for the electric 3-wheelers. My 3-wheeler could get about 25 miles to a charge realistically (brand new 12 volt lead acid "alarm system" tall batteries) with one occupant. 2 points for jest though: I upgraded my 3 wheeler from a 48 volt to a 60 volt for more hp on the parking garage exits, AND, I had the motorcycle shop install a second set of 5 batteries under the front seat to double the range to 50 miles per charge. The upgrade kit involved using 2 chargers for simultaneous charging, 2 breaker switches under the seat to turn one circuit off and the other one on, and an upgraded voltage controller. There are a few "manufacturers" that produce these (sub-$1000) cars around China. Interestingly enough, one of the makers features a (range extender option... lol) single piston lawn mower engine beneath the hood to charge the batteries and operate the vehicle (via DC) for long trips. These cars don't get plated in the big cities, and they would never do more that 35 kph at full throttle. They're a kick in the pants to take on a dirt trail though.. :)

So has anyone ever added a second motor, (because they aren't expensive) some active cooling for the motors, and then a bit of a battery swap. They have LiFe 12 v fairly cheap that have about half the weight of a sealed lead acid, add in about 10 of those up put an extra battery in series to take it to 72 volts (that's why we are active cooling both motors) and you could end up with something that pushes you around quite a bit faster with more range.(better battery for the win, extra motor helps to) This is just my back of bar napkin thought though.

It doesn't tell you very much though, it's like saying that the difference between a diesel engine and a gasoline engine is that one runs on diesel fuel and the other runs on gasoline and while true it doesn't teach you a lot. I don't think that someone who does not know anything about electricity will benefit a lot of knowing how the graphs of voltage as a function of time of AC and DC look alone. It's tailored for this video and works well to quickly explain to you why using DC motors is cheaper but if someone asked you what AC and DC are, then telling them "AC is wiggly, DC is straight" would be in a way like saying "sod off". The total cost for someone in the U.S. to buy one of these exceeds $6,000 dollars. $930 is the bulk price tag for very large orders and doesn't even include batteries. To buy (1) with the large battery package (50 mile range) cost $2,249. To ship it across the ocean cost another $2200. Once it arrives in port the import taxes are an additional $1100 and the port charges $750 to release it as well. Then you have to ship it from the port to your house somehow.

Swap the tiny electric motor for a Briggs and Stratton of some kind, 670cc V twin gets you about 20HP unmodified and loads of torque with a gokart clutch or CVT and simple belt drive. Replace the hubs and as much of the suspension as possible with parts of a wrecked golf cart or large 4 wheeler for good shocks and unlimited wheel/tire choices. Indeed, they are meant for older people who don't have an easy way to get around and already have very low budgets for their everyday needs. It's supposed to give them a modicum of range and Independence to get their groceries or pick up the grandkids at school something they couldn't do anymore if they had to walk. Another neat and actually useful purpose for this car would be as a transition/backup car Let's make an analogy with PC GPUs: Your home suffered a power surge which fried your $1,000+ fancy GeForce RTX 4090; this power surge caught you completely off-guard: you're broke, didn't have a UPS, and your CPU is an Intel's F SKU series, which means that it doesn't have an on-die GPU, thus rendering your PC useless whithout an external GPU. You buy a GeForce GT1030 for ~$30, which while you won't be able to play any games, at least you'll be able to use your PC in other tasks (e.g. vídeo watching, work, etc...) while you save again for another high-end GPU This tiny thing would be the "car equivalent" of a GT1030, while you wait for your insurance to do anything or save enough money to buy another full-fledged car
