@EmptyKingdoms

@@iximusic It would be accurate on some occasions, but take the verse riff from Highway Robbery (3rd track off of Miss Machine? Something like that). It's clearly _not_ 4/4. Also, be sure to listen to Car Bomb next time, so weird time changes, sometimes they are _tempo_ fluctuations. It gets gimmicky if you really look it up, but they're amazing. What fascinates me in DEP, The Number 12 Looks Like You, and other such mathcore bands, are the pockets of absolutely stunning consonance amidst the chaotic destructive energy. Take the intro from TN12LLY's "Jay Waking Backwards" or the bossa nova section in "The Garden's All Nighters". Because of the dissonance in context, and because of dealing with so much noise, such musicians seem more capable of creating consonant music too. It's amazing.

The first time I saw them (2004) they started with “Sugar Coated Sour”, as soon as the intro bit finished the singer and BOTH guitar players did running leaps into the crowd. They literally never missed a note, and would continue to do this without warning. Greg Puciato would hurl pieces of Scott Pennie’s kit offstage midsong, and I don’t think Pennie even noticed it happen. Saw them four times, just tremendous.

BTW, Farewell Mona Lisa is usually used by reactors, and i like this song a lot, but it's far from best tDEP song

I use to change my favorite song, it turns out that the 4 songs i always take as my favorites are "Farewell, mona lisa", "Chinese Whispers", "Widower" and "Gold teeth on a bum". It's a very amusing coincidence that all 4 songs are from Option Paralysis, i guess it's quite obvious that in fact this album brought us the most experimental and above all heterogeneous songs with wide structures and variety, more than any other album I've listened.

One funny thing about their rhytms is that they mentioned in some interviews that thanks to their last drummer, Billy Rymer, they were able to record some of their crazier songs (like prancer from the 2013 album) without grid and metronome. On one hand that is simply mind blowing, on the other they often added having a truly insane number of band practice sessions and long pauses between records.

On top of being incredible musicians, I remember the guitarists being able to run and jump on top of their half stacks mid-song while shedding away…. Also, for one tour they had a guy blowing fire on stage with them. Ive been to MANY shows throughout the years, and no other group has come close to being as exciting and explosive as DEP was live.
