He is so awesome, isn’t he? Stranger is one of my absolute favorite songs. I get goosebumps every time I hear it. I’m a real fan of movies that have such a mystical or oriental atmosphere. And it was such a great idea by Dimash to use the Qobyz for that. The Qobyz is a very old two stringed Kazakh folk instrument and it’s wide spread among Kazakhs. The man who often is playing the kobyz in Dimash’s performance (also here in Stranger) is the best on this instrument and a good friend of Dimash. His name is Olzhas Qurmanbek. You often can hear this instrument when Dimash sings in his native tongue like Samaltau, Qairan Elim or Òmir Òter. As a Kazakh he speaks Kazakh and Russian fluently. He sang Stranger for the first time at New Wave in Sochi, Russia in 2021. This is an international competition for young artists, founded in 2002 by Igor Krutoy. Dimash sang here as a guest and was also a member of the jury. Igor Krutoy, like so many other masterpieces, wrote this song specifically for Dimash and his incredible vocal range (in this song alone he sings 5 octaves F1-F6 I think). And the last note he held for 20 seconds. The way he switchs so affortlessly between the different registers and octaves in one song is so mesmerizing and unbelievable. Stranger was written by the famous Russian/Ukrainian composer, producer and songwriter Igor Krutoy. His and Dimash's collaboration created true masterpieces. He writes songs that only Dimash could sing with his vocal range, such as Olimpico, Stranger or Ave Maria. You’ll often see him accompanying Dimash on the piano. If Igor Krutoy is there, the song was also written by him.The two have no contract. Their cooperation is based more on mutual trust. It’s more like a father/son relationship. The light show, the background dancers. Everything. With this song in this version I always get breathlessness. The way he represents himself on stage, the hand movements. I think he has incredibly beautiful hands🤭(and apparently many cameramen think so too, since many of the camera shots during his performances very often only show his hands. Sometimes it seems as if he is conducting himself. This is really fascinating). And the facial expression, the look. There he looks so commanding😱. In my opinion, this version of Olimpico is one of the most impressive performances ever. If you don't know what the song is about, you'd think he was going to war and is calling his army to a lost battle 😅! It’s absolutely stunning. You can't really find a disappointing performance from Dimash. This song was written with his voice in mind by the guy on the piano; Igor Krutoy, a composer who was tempted to come out of semi-retirement by the opportunity to write material for him. If you want to follow his growth as an artist then the Chinese competition Singer 2017 is the place to start (he was a non-Chinese wildcard and finished second at the end of the series). Or you could work backwards and start with his MV "When I've Got You", which dropped on KZfaq today. Or maybe just hop around between early and late material. His fanbase (he calls them his Dears) will be more than happy to help.

"Stranger" was the first of three songs Dimash premiered in August 2021, during his performance at the annual New Wave music competition in Sochi, Russia. He again performed with Igor Krotoy on the piano and introduced Olzhas Qurmanbeck on the kobyz. Igor Krutoy composed the music, American poetess Sharon Vaughn wrote the lyrics, and Dimitris Kontopoulos (Greece) and Yerlan Bekchurin (Kazakhstan) did the arrangement. The instrument is carved from a single piece of wood (typically apricot), juniper (arsha), maple, pine tree, or birch. The instrument consists of three parts: head (base), middle (base is keude), and lower part (ayak) and usually measures 60-70 cm. The resonant cavity is usually covered with goatskin, reproducing a sound representing the animals of the steppe. It has two strings made from horsetail hair, one to provide melody and the other resonance. Someone explained that one string is made with 75 horse hairs and the other with 60 horsehairs. The strings are not pushed down to a fret but are played with pressure applied by either the fingernail or the pad on the finger, and the tones are varied by the pressure of the bow.
