The season finale of The Last of Us on HBO is this weekend, and to celebrate we decided to make our own animatronic Clicker. A Clicker is essentially a mushroom zombie. The cordyceps fungus has taken over their brain and burst out of their skull. Gross. Because of this, they can’t see and instead use a type of clicking echolocation to find their prey. Naughty Dog did a crazy good job designing these iconic monsters in the video game, and HBO really knocked it out of the park bringing them to life for their The Last of Us show. We couldn’t wait to make a fungus zombie of our own.
We started our build using the Nightcrawler animatronic from Spirit Halloween. This Halloween animatronic has a great jump scare and was the perfect base for our DIY Clicker. We sculpted our zombie head’s mushroom bloom with craft foam and foam clay and his clothes were upcycled from the Goodwill thrift store.
We’re so happy with how our Spirit Halloween animatronic makeover turned out and we can’t wait to see the finale of The Last of Us this weekend! If you want to learn how to make animatronic monsters, upgrade your Spirit Halloween/Home Depot/Lowes animatronics, or just watch some awesome Halloween DIY tutorials, please consider checking out some of our other Spooky DIY videos. And until next time, Stay Wicked!

A little tip with the air brush, if you keep the air flowing while not painting, it keeps the paint from drying and preventing clogging

I can't tell if Meredith told or not, but if you want to prevent paint blotches from the airbrush, I suggest that before you let go of the air, you stop the paint flow first. That way there won't be any paint left when you start to spray again. It also prevents clogs. It's a fantastic build by the way!

Absolutely badass! Though the pop-up concerns me; the lack of airtime compared to the outta the box NightCrawler means there's a little too much weight on his mech. Maybe makeover Groundskeeper from Morris Costumes into the Scissorman from Clock Tower?

I'm glad I wasn't the only person to notice this. I was thinking it's cause of the modifications they made to the structure but weight actually makes a lot more sense. Esp bc it seemed to move more after they bent the frame. It's a sin bc I feel like that extra movement would have really made it a lot more terrifying. Still it's a stunning piece of art and the fact it's functional at all makes it 1000x better. Tons of patience skill and follow thru I don't have!

YESSS! Foam clay is what I used for making one of my first masks. I wanted as realistic a fox skull as I could make while still having it fit flat to my face, and it made it SO obscenely easy being able to blend out lines so they looked more like a natural fusion of the bone and allowing for the open end of the nose to have the delightfully pockmarked look. I didn’t have access to an airbrush, but one of my favorite parts about that stuff is it ALSO holds onto dry pigments SUPER well!

9/10, the ONLY few recommendations I might add is that after the clicker phase is actually inflicted, the clothes are almost non existent, if he had the background of an office building, he'd be put in something a bit more tight and strung up, so if it was tight, the zombie would likely tear it to shreds, most clickers don't even have clothes, but overall, great job, the face bloom is just about perfect, and as for the stance, it goes great with the whole clicky twitch, but the way its on all fours kind of would resemble stalkers more.

It’s great to see more insight into the creation of these type of models. It really feels like you’re the only KZfaqrs that really do a deep dive into the creation and I really appreciate it. Looking forward to the next video!! PS: those mushroom airbrush pieces are cool!!!!

Amazing work, guys! I'm going to pick up some foam clay and try some of these techniques myself. I would love to have one of those extra foam mushroom bits if they aren't already spoken for.
