We made it out of Florida! It's been a crazy few months getting our home renovated, on the market, and moving out of FL. We are currently hanging out in East TN for a while ... follow to see where life takes us next. Your guess is as good as mine!
Are we moving back to Tennessee permanently?
Is Tennessee REALLY cheaper than Florida?
Why not keep our Florida home and rent it out?
After struggling financially for the first part of the year, we decided moving out of Florida was going to be the best thing for our family. The cost of living in FL has been rising dramatically and we just didn't feel the price tag of Florida living was worth the struggle. So a couple months ago, we decided to sell our home, and basically everything we own, and make some drastic lifestyle changes. Last week, we left Florida behind, with only what would fit in our Toyota Corolla, and are now staying in an Airbnb in TN waiting for our house to sell ... and figuring out what our next move will be.

@@secretjourney4815 we moved from Miami Lakes, FL to Gainesville, GA. A BIG change in scenery but we also went from paying 3K + utilities for 2/2 apt to paying 2K for a 4/3 home. We are subleasing a room to a relative so our actual rent cost is 1.2K which makes it worth it. Moving our things was the biggest expense; we downsized and did it with a 16 foot Penske truck for ~$1500 (including tolls and fuel).

My husband and and are native Floridians and just moved out of state for the exact reasons you mentioned. Homeowners insurance is out of control and HOAs are going to be a lot more expensive because of it. We moved to Gainesville GA and love it! Right , I live in Tennessee , 55 years in Tennessee. It’s the same everywhere. Food prices have doubled. Home prices have doubled everywhere! And it’s about finding that place you love. We have a daughter in Florida so we are going to Florida. Selling everything to go and be comfortable there. We are in Florida often and love it. It suits us. Yes it might cost just a little more for annual property taxes but actually we we’re paying huge taxes in Tennessee until 2017 when we move to a tiny country town. But it has its issues. Like my daughter told us good medical care is not in the tiny towns it’s the nicer bugger cities. And health care in important to us. So paying a little more every year in property taxes is ok. But everything else you spend money on have doubled all over the country. You can’t run from it. We hate the extreme high humidity in Tennessee. And I don’t care what anyone says Florida is not as hit and humid as Tennessee. I actually lived in Neptune beach for 3 years so I know what it’s like. And what to expect. You can get land in Tennessee for a good price. So I pray this family find a great place to settle down. I have 11 acres on the Tennessee river I’ll sell them. It’s a gorgeous stop. We bought it thinking we would homestead. But I got sick. So headed to Florida. We are excited about it. I’m ready for a pool I can use all year long. I have psoriatic arthritis so it will be a huge help. A real blessing.

@@FourHuskyHomestead you must be kidding.... I have lived in New York, around DC, on the Canadian border and in Baton Rouge. I now live in North Florida and Florida has the most miserable hot humid weather I have ever experienced. It makes New Orleans and Baron Rouge seem like heaven with respect to the heat and I would take the four seasons even along the Canadian / NY border over Florida heat and hurricanes. Check out the home owner's insurance in Florida as well as high car insurance. Property taxes are higher in Florida then Louisiana but lower then New York or Virginia but only in some counties. In some counties in Florida the property taxes are higher then even upstate NY. I tell everyone to experience a Florida summer, which lasts like 9 months, and hurricane season before ever considering this miserable state. In the cold, I can always put on an extra sweater but in this miserable 96 degree heat and 100% humidity what do you do when you just sit there and sweat while wearing nothing more then a bathing suit. Moving to Florida was NOT my choice. It was a thing of either becoming unemployed or move with my job. If I had a choice I would NEVER have moved to Florida.. But, as for cost of living, every place in the USA is experiencing massive cost of living increases. Several of my friends have left the USA for places like France, Hungary, Romania, Poland and Mexico and not one regrets the move. I even have a nephew who lives in Japan with his Japanese wife and loves it there and would not move back to the USA for anything.

Congrats on the move. I am also in the process of getting the hell out of this hellhole of a state. But what is so said is they don't make it easy to get out. All the renovations that need to be done to make the up to code. Codes that were not there at one point and all of a sudden pop up. Everytime think have everything in place, inspection comes up with something else they did not include before because it was not an issue. I am not against all the codes to make things right. But some are petty. Now that things are set time to get it on the market and out of here. Sad part is, when you look at the market, housing is so high in FL, houses are going at extreme prices, and in most parts going quickly. I hope the same. When you look at housing more north, people don't realize, sell your house in FL, you can get 3 for the price of one when you go north. Sad so sad.

No people want a better living for themselves. Hurricanes are far more worse than blizzards & snow. Let’s get that straightened out. That state caters to people like you and the wealthy anyways. I lived through hurricane season 2004-2005 that was a hot ass mess and dangerous. The sea levels has risen, hotter temperatures, more flooding Mc low paying jobs, and what’s sad is the poor Floridians won’t have money to leave if they don’t leave before the next passing decade. The economy in Florida is trash.

Not sure you've done your research. But they say you don't know what you don't know. FYI, lots of campgrounds don't allow school bus conversions to stay. Some require an RVIA certification and more have a 10 year rule. I travel all over the country in an rv and find it is not cheaper in most other places for food and general living expenses than Florida. I winter in Florida every year and lived there for 10 years before I retired in 2017. Best of luck to ya. I think you will have an eye opening experience especially at your young age to not have an Appreciating asset (real estate) and only have DEpreciating assets (a decade if not more old school bus).

Honestly, they've made extremely poor money wasting decisions that have resulted in their current situation. Moving is expensive! They've made two big moves in three years. There are soooo many costs associating with moving. Now an RV purchase and living in an RV. If their goal is to travel, then good, get the RV. If their goal is to build wealth and security .... The layout in many cities is too spread out with heavy traffic and dangerous high speed driving. Just not the paradise you see on the surface. Very relaxed place with some amazing churches. We live in Tennessee and are moving to Florida. It’s no peaches & cream in Tennessee. I hope you have a great life in Tennessee. But for us we have been hit all summer with major storms. About every 2 weeks we get hit with storm damage we have not ever seen. Im about to turn 60 and these storms are like no other. It’s so hot and humidity in Tennessee are door are swallowed shut we have to shave them down to use them. The refrigerator is out from humidity damage. Our floors are snagging now due to humidity damage. And we lost a dog in part to this high heat & humidity. I have an autoimmune disease so the heat is horrible for my heath. My daughter lives in Florida and we are there all the time. I feel much better in Florida. I follow real-estate and Tennessee prices have doubled too. Now I do have about 11 acres for sale at the Tennessee river if you are interested. We have never lived there but it’s a gorgeous place. Water spring wild blackberries everywhere. And grapes, perfect place to homestead. We are selling all of our property in Tennessee. And will be going to Ocala in may when our daughter graduates with her doctorate. After going through the major storms we have this summer we are prepared for hurricane season. We invested in solar and things to get through it. But we had planned to live off grid at one point in our lifetime. That’s why we bought the land up by the river. Then I got psoriatic arthritis. I’m looking forward to the doctors in Florida. Not happy with the medical care in Tennessee. I pray your family finds that place that will be safe and perfect. But just know Tennessee has its problems too. God bless ! Leslye

Thank you ! I am . I lived in Neptune beach for 3 years. And my daughter is about to graduate with her doctorate at UF . To me west Tennessee is hotter and more humidity. In Florida you have the ocean breeze even inland and you can swim every day. The 4 storms we had in the past month were horrendous. It was 2 week for my daughter to get her power back on in Bartlett. It’s our house she rents it from us. So we went to see the damage. Because it’s on us to repair it. We had 4 detours within 2 blocks of her house. I have never seen damage so bad. Lines and poles in the road. All the fences in her street were down . My dad lives 3 blocks from her and we could not even get to him. Outside right now I have 200 year old tree uprooted from a storm that hit our town an hour east of Memphis last night. I have suffered all summer and summer started in March. We really don’t have winter any longer. But ones in a while we get an ice storm. I’m 60 now and I know what’s going on. I’d rather be in Florida with a pool I can use year round and one daughter near by an I think my Tennessee daughter will join us. But cost of living we are looking at about 1000 a year in property taxes. It’s worth it since I have psoriatic arthritis. I can swim each day and get relief. And that’s the big thing . Pain, the last 20 years I have stuffed with pain. I was in a plane crash, and that spinal cord injury got worse when I developed severe arthritis. The thing is I don’t hurt in Florida. I can be in Florida and pain doesn’t enter my mind. When we got home from Gainesville a month ago I woke up that next day and I said oh my God ! Help me. As soon as we got back that pain hit me hard. It’s been like that 20 years. Sometimes I go to Florida just to get relief. I can not explain it. Sure I swim when I’m there, but it’s like once I get below I 10 the pain level drops. And for that it’s worth it. Now I say it’s more in taxes but we did pay twice as much more in taxes before we moved to the little country home we have now. So that’s not really a deal breaker. So I’m ready. We have 4 properties to sell. And one we are flipping. So we just need to get through the next 10 months. As soon as our youngest graduates from UF we should be ready to go. Can’t wait to get relief from pain and it’s our last home purchase. So we are getting something that’s big enough for our children to visit. We go to Disney about 4 times a year and we will be able to actually be home when they visit. We have a time share and that’s nice but we can’t take our huskies. I really hate leaving our huskies. They are family too. We like them to be with us. Hope Tennessee is all you want it to be. And if you are interested in 11 acres at the Tennessee river just message us. It’s a beautiful place. But turning 60 this year. And the severe arthritis It’s not for me anymore. A young family would really enjoy it. Leslye

The other thing about keeping your Florida house and renting it is that as you said, Florida favors the renters over the owners. Also, you have the issue of squatters. I have seen many news articles about squatters who break into vacant houses and just start living in them. When the owners try to kick them out the find that law enforcement will not help and that they have to jump through all sorts of legal hoops to finally get the squatters out. But, in the mean time the squatters are ruining the house and in some cases will actually strip out plumbing and such for the copper and leave the house in an un-livable condition once they are finally forced out.

Not a good idea to start high. Better off to start a little bit lower than market value. This would have created a multiple offer situation. Buyers are super savvy and will look as to why it’s selling two years later for double?!? Don’t let it be come a stale listing. If you don’t have offers in in the first week then you are definitely overpriced. Don’t wait to lower the price. Your realtor knows the market and gave you good advice as where to price it. Your realtor just “bought your listing” by listing it higher than it should be. ANYWAY…wishing you Good luck!!

It can also be a huge worry renting out a home. What if your tenants trash the house or are bad neighbours? I've heard some awful horror stories of how some tenants treat other people's homes. So you need to hire a tenancy agency to manage it if you are far away and do regular checks to make sure they are looking after the place. It's just so much work for not 'that much' and especially if you're not that fussed about returning to the area or moving back into the property. Seems like you have a good plan. Good luck. Thankfully I left Florida many years ago for college and take a chance for a new life. The exposure living in other states gives you different perspective and exposure to different people. Florida is so expensive (property, insurance and limited jobs that pay a living to keep up with the cost of living in Florida) that I would never consider the idea of moving back.

I live in northeast Pennsylvania and the cost of living here has skyrocketed a lot of out-of-town landlords bought up the properties and the rents have gone up tremendously. Pennsylvania is not that cheap as everyone may think it is. We have the highest gas tax in the country.

i'm still making a Massachusetts salary, Florida is much more affordable in comparison it's hilarious. Even with inflation, Florida is still cheaper than Massachusetts.

It's expensive Every USA. You have to put it on paper and do the math. I live in a very expensive area rent wise. But, I other things are less expensive. My car insurance alone is so much less expensive because of the zip code that it makes up the difference in rent. Everything I need is within a short distance. I hardly buy gas. Utilities are less here too. It's the hidden cost that most overlook. So I say....Live were you're HAPPY !!! 😊✌️🦋

Any beach community in any state is expensive. If you're close to the water like their house, your taxes and insurance are higher. Beach communities can charge for a week rental what non-beach communities charge for a month. Try to get a beach rental even in jersey for a week. This woman is comparing apples to oranges as far as states and communities are concerned. Buying a house within a block from a beach ANYWHERE is expensive.

@susansmith493 in FL, you don't have to live near the beach for homes, insurance, taxes to be expensive. The state is expensive...period.

@@millabasset1710the key is Massachusetts salary. FL salaries do not compare. Cost of living has skyrocketed just in 3 to 4 yrs but incomes in FL have not kept up at all. I don't mind paying more to live in another state because incomes are higher to a point where I would still come out ahead each month.
