Well that's true for a lot of subscribers, but many do watch for the invention/chemistry itself. NileRed's channel started off with mostly chemists or people in the field watching, and shifted over time. They try to keep a balance with the content put out because some old viewers start getting disinterested/annoyed and they voice this online.

An NFT is basically having a picture in a room in a museum, and you have a unique ticket that lets you go into that room whenever you want. Except that sometimes the room has a window (screeenshotting/right clicking), that other people can look through whenever they want. And sometimes the door is just unlocked (if the NFT image is identical to the right click version), and anyone can go in the room. Also, you're only guaranteed entry into that room. It's not guaranteed that the room will still have the same painting, or any painting, in the future (the person hosting the image can change it whenever they want). And it's not guaranteed that the room will still be there in the future (the server could crash/lose funding). On top of all of that, the painting probably looks awful, and is a low effort, slightly different version of the painting next door.

Will's scheme in the beginning reminded me of a thing back in high school. Me and a friend were in class learning how to code in I think C++ and together we had to come up with an idea for an app of some sort, he jokingly suggested a hand warmer app that just runs a ton of nonsense code that overheats your battery and warms your hand. Oir teacher thought it was funny but, I think it was the galaxy 7 the one that exploded, had just come out and told us it was a really bad idea, but points for creativity.

The problem with using the heat generated by computers isn’t as much as you’d hope. Like in the water heater example, if you have it hooked up to 120v AC then it can generate 1500 watts of heat very easily and cheaply. You would need multiple very expensive CPUs and GPUs in order to math that and they would take up more space. Using AC to heat things tho is actually a good idea since you can get more heat out if it than watts of electricity you put in. When used for heating it’s called a heat pump and you can actually get units that are basically just AC units that can reverse the flow of energy so in the summer it cools your house and in the winter it warms your house. It would also make things like water heaters, clothes dryers, etc much much more efficient because resistive heating is incredibly inefficient and that’s what they use now (if not gas). The channel Technology Connections has a great video on heat pumps if you’d like to learn more.
@Emilamlom
@Emilamlom 2 жыл бұрын
For your first point, it actually does work. There are server farms in Europe that heat water with the excess heat from the servers. On a house scale, it might not be viable though.

Yeah, when you get up to a significant number of GPUs though, it definitely helps, I have essentially a 2.5 kwh heater running all the time in my house so I'm not using my furnace as much and it's making me money

As a guy that runs a crypto warehouse using the heat you are already producing to heat other things is pretty useful. For example we feed the exhaust heat back into the building during the winter to not run any heaters. It will be 7 degrees outside and 60 in the warehouse. Now summer is a different story.

@Darpeh
@Darpeh 2 жыл бұрын
William what you're loosely describing at the start is a heat pump and there are many air conditioners out there (not common in US homes) that allow you to flip the direction of the heat cycle and be a heater in the winter months. They work great as long as they dont freeze up or it's not too cold outside. That's probably an easier application than heating your pool but it's still an interesting idea to move heat around to where it should be. One of these units would probably serve you well since it has two radiators that can both heat and cool.
@endless2239
@endless2239 2 жыл бұрын
it wouldn't freeze if it is in the same room as the miners, you would be moving their heat into the water tank then, it would never get too cold, I think.

Computers are just really sophisticated resistors (converts 100% of input energy to heat) The crypto-heater is fun to realize, but ultimately not the best way to do things We have more efficient ways of heating things. Just run the AC in reverse (if the manufacturer didn't cheap out on the one part that allows it) and you'll move heat energy instead of making it completely from electricity Then there's the opportunity cost from creating crypto-specific ASICs because computer chips are very difficult to make (requiring tons of expensive infrastructure). There are better parts to be spending microchip production capacity on

The modern s19 btc miner takes 3400 watts to run a single machine . Solar panels are about 15 watts per square foot. You would need 230 sqft roughly to run a single machine. Each machine puts out about 11000 BTUs. As a guy that loves solar panels, building my own EV and crypto it's not there yet. The ASICS aren't efficient enough and the solar panels required with the batteries to run them 24/7, which most miners do except peak power hours, just isn't an acceptable amount of overhead. Hence why most miners are running off natural gas (cheap), nuclear for a constant draw, and of course hydro which is still the cleanest reneawable that works right now.
@DantalionNl
@DantalionNl 2 жыл бұрын
@@jmbrook An s19 miner consist of half a dozen internal cards connected to a backplane. The card runs fine with one or more cards removed while also reducing its power consumption by ~ 1/5 for each card. If 3400 is to much for your house just remove however many cards it takes. Literally anything is better than burning natural gas in terms of waste heat efficiency, even if its something like running 50 minecraft servers in your basement.
@jmbrook
@jmbrook 2 жыл бұрын
@@DantalionNl I run hundreds of machines and the power I get is cheap. @@jmbrook You completely missed the point, it was not about making money or the relevant cost / profit of running these installations (neither was it in the video and neither is it in this thread). It was about that burning fossil fuel to heat your house is inherently wasteful and any process that contributes to something useful while alongside it heating your house is better in that regard. By the time you transport the heat outside of residential areas back into these areas the fast majority of it will be lost.

because they were talking about oil, i thought i'd share a fun fact: Oil itself isn't combustable, Only the fumes that come from it are. so you could just theoretically just dip a match in it and the oil wouldn't burn.

The idea of using recovered heat from air conditioning to warm up a swimming pool, that is sometimes done in stuff like university swimming pools. We installed something like that at the university I usually work at a few years ago. These energy recovery strategies are very common in commercial and industrial settings, but the returns versus the cost of installation often just don't work out in a residential scale.

I love how you describe air to water heat pumps at the beginning of the episode. They're a great idea - my Reclaim Energy hot water heat pump uses CO2 as refrigerant and is roughly 5 times more efficient than a regular electric hot water system. They're becoming more and more common for heating hot water and pools in regions with expensive energy.

Not sure if it was already discussed, but for the discussion of crypto mining and using the waste heat for another process like water heating is a well established technique. This is called co-generation. In many places around the world, waste heat from industrial processes is used for building/ water heating. In some cases, the waste heat is even used to drive steam-cycle heat engines to produce electricity. Cool idea Will, but like most ideas, if they're any good at all, someone has already probably done it before.

Still looking forward to the oyster farming video. Wouldn't you be able to get out of some taxes by claiming more things as business expenses? If Chelsea owns Cat Warehouse and William owns William Osman Industries then you could probably expense date night as a "business meeting." I mean, if people can hold business meetings on the golf course then I don't see any reason why the same can't be said of the mini-golf course. Maybe call it a team building exercise if William owns both. I'm sure others have had the same idea, so all you need to do is look it up to make sure you get the wording right.

Heat pumps (ac units) are already commonly used to heat pools and are notably more efficient than just using electricity to run a heater.

well....in hungary you can have like a government founding for installing solar panels... you don't even really have to have tax froud if you break even with generated and used power. if you over produce you'll get taxed. but if you don't you'll be fine. taxes are also quite low compared to other countries. Also there are many foundings for small businesses, and even more founding for IT, and Reasearch and development purposes. :D Also I personally would wery much like to see ya here in hungary. :D

Regarding the mining-heating Idea, there is a heating tech called Heat Pump, which is basically an AC that can reverse Cycle to also heat. You can use the exhaust Air of your mining rig to jack up the efficiency of those heat pumps by a lot. They get more efficient the less the difference of the intake temperature and the target temperature is. These also come with a hot water tank that can support your central heating in the summer, so that is an easy way of heating water with crypto.

Some friends of mine designed a heat reclaimation system for attics to pull heat from the attic and boost the hot water heater for their Mechanical Engineering senior design project. It showed a marked water preheat temperature, which would reduce the hot water heater energy consumption. I think they also had a bypass valve on it, so you could bypass in the winter time.

Nigel, nitro isn't gasoline, its nitromethane. You ever heard of top fuel dragsters? That's basically the stuff they use. Those little engines are *powerful* for their size. The .45 I put on my RC fan boat as a kid put out something like 4 or 5 horsepower and it was like the size of my fist maybe? The propeller could take off fingers in a hurry, i think it was a 10 inch or 12 inch prop. That boat probably did 70-80kph until it exploded itself on the shore after losing the radio in it one afternoon. My fathers stunt plane did something like 100kph with a much larger engine. They're not joking when they say 30 thousand RPM, they really rev that high. The sound is intense, especially when you open them up full throttle to take off. The wind getting thrown behind the prop will blow your entire shop clean when you finally get it to start after several hours of adjusting, cleaning and heating glow plugs the first time you start it each year. They're *very* finicky little things. Almost like they just have an innate desire to not run.

Scheme with renewable resources is buying property with a strong downhill stream and waterwheel it for electricity along with wind/solar to mine ur bitcoins and heat your home. I dont think the water heater would be very effective as the heat exchange depends directly on the difference in temperature so you lose efficiency the closer the temperatures are. an exponentially plateauing graph.

The best tax avoidance scheme I know is 100% legal and only for retirement but still kind of interesting. If you have a 401k that allows for after-tax contributions AND in-service disbursements, you can store up to $38,500 in it, then roll that money over into a roth IRA. This is called a mega-backdoor roth conversion, and can be done in the same year as a regular backdoor roth conversion, meaning in 2021 you can save up to $44,500 in a roth IRA when you're only supposed to be able to save $6,000. Normally you'd pay capital gains tax when you sell investments, on top of the income tax you paid to make the money to buy those shares, but roth IRA accounts are tax-advantaged. That means you can skip paying capital gains taxes on $44,500+ dollars a year, as long as you only withdraw it when you're old and useless. You can always withdraw the principal at any time tax-free though
