In 2005 BBC Films acquired the rights to adapt the book as a film. Director Lynne Ramsay signed on to direct. It was announced in March 2009 that Tilda Swinton had signed on to star in the film as Eva. Filming began on location in Stamford, Connecticut on April 19, 2010.
We Need to Talk About Kevin movie is based upon a 2003 novel by Lionel Shriver and published by Serpent's Tail, concerning a fictional school massacre. It is written from the perspective of the killer's mother, Eva Khatchadourian, and documents her attempt to come to terms with her son Kevin and the murders he committed. Although told in the first person as a series of letters from Eva to her husband, the novel's structure also strongly resembles that of a thriller. The novel, Shriver's seventh, won the 2005 Orange Prize, a UK-based prize for female authors of any nationality writing in English.

sorry, I disagree with that. nobody turns out as Kevin, not without a reason. and I think that here the reason is the behaviour and cold approach of his mother was the reason, and both of them knew and felt it very well. as a little child, he already felt that his mother didn't love him, or at least not with the type of love that a child needs. but all the same, they were similar, they understood each other better than anyone else, and their similarity caused a strong bond but at the same time, hostility, distance, silence, fear. I would blame his mother, because we can conclude from a phone call that her relationship with her own mother wasn't flawless either, so I can't decide whether we have the right to blame her for not loving, or not expressing her love towards him correctly, but it certainly is the reason why he is as he is. Kevin was desperately seeking his mother's love, attention, affection, he wanted her to care about him, to show curiosity, etc. - in my opinion. sorry about the long post, I kinda wrote it as a response and to myself too, bc I just finished watching it and r n have no one to discuss it with :/

just watched the movie.. wtf the mom did her best to connect with the kid and showed so much love and affection. Guess he had a brain abnormality and was born a sadistic psychopath and chose his mother as the main target of torture, she wasnt perfect but she was still a good mom. i would expect a child whos been severely abused and neglected to turn out that way but obviously with him its more nature than nurture.

"Nobody turns out as Kevin"? Psycopathy is a extensively researched disorder, which can show in the child's personality as young as 2 years old, so, wrong. I don't think she's a good mother either, as there was no punishment apparent for misbehaviour, nor was there any psychiatric evaluation done. All in all, a disturbing movie that reinforces my believe I should not parent a child.

Did u guys ever notice all the shirts Kevin wore as a child he wears as a teen, they barely fit him, I think he did that just to piss off his mom more. It’s those little things like smashing the cereal into little pieces very slowly! The last half hour did not surprise me one bit! Wow he was pure evil!
@cadencemcglothlin3223
@cadencemcglothlin3223 5 жыл бұрын
Suzzanne Stofko personally, i believe he continued to wear his shirts because it represented how he treasured when his mother did try to care for him. she continued to keep them clean for him, so he continued to wear them as if they held sentimental value. from how i perceived the movie, he did everything because he was upset he didn’t get cared for by his mom like he wished he had. he despised his little sister because she got the attention he wished he had. probably why he killed his dad and sister too, he was jealous of them.

Linalool31 she didnt really though. She never wanted him and acted like it. Theres a scene where she tells him even though he might not like his new sister at first, he could get used to her eventually. He responds to this by saying “Just because you get used to something doesn’t mean you like it. You’re used to me..” and the Mom just stares at him. All but reassuring to him as a child that she doesn’t like/love him. It was an opportunity to display a smidgen of love and she cold shoulders him.

@itubedesiree open to interpretation, but I took it that the mother finally was able to love her son. He was a jaded little devil, no one saw that, and when he confessed his confusion, she felt that she finally got through to him and got the peace she needed. There's alot more to it, but I don't wanna spoil it for anyone else.

*put your favorite vine quote here* * Because Kevin was unreceptive and hateful towards his mom from the moment he was born, from crying nonstop when he's with her to not crying when he's with his dad. Almost everytime he looks at his mom it is with hate and he goes out of his way to ruin anything his mother likes and anger her and she puts up with it, like motherly love. Throughout the film the mother shows unconditional love and attempts at bonding despite the conflict and history between her and Kevin, like any mother would. His mom offered him unconditional love and affection and tolerance and he just spent his whole life trying to admonish and spite his mom hatefully in many ways.

Theres a scene where shes trying to warm him up to the idea of having a sister and tells him if he doesn’t like her at first perhaps he will get used to the idea of having one. He responds by saying “just cause you get used to something doesn’t mean you like it. You’re used to me..” And his mom just stares him. All but agreeing. She never loved that child but felt an inclination to try and be a mother bc that’s the circumstance she was in. The kid felt rejected by his mother

I don't understand why the people in the comment section are blaming the mom. Sure, she should have put her foot down and payed more attention to what he was doing, but she did not turn him into a raging killer, he did that on his own. She did her part as a mother, and regardless of how strict she could have been/ how much attention she could have payed to him, it was inevitable that he turned out like that. This monster wasn't created over time, he was legitimately born that way. Tell me I am wrong amd you are either stupid, or haven't seen the movie.

Beautiful, haunting song by Washington Phillips featured in middle and end of movie (Mother's Last Words to Her Son.) I just watch the movie with my sister and we have so many question to discuss but don't know what's the right answer. I think, the Mom already felt depressed even before Kevin had born. Remember at the class full with pregnant women, how Mom didn't look happy. More and more, she unconsciously start make a distance with Kevin, how she show love but look like not sincere enough to call or Mom's love. Moreover, Kevin also it'a a unique child. He ia clever that on young age, he can acted lovely with his father but in the back torture his Mom. 1 thing that they have similarity, both Mom and Kevin are sociopath. Plus the condition get worse when the Dad wouldn't heard his wife's story. Everything make it misleading.

The child treated his mom like that cause of his mother's behaviour. The baby felt the way his mom was feeling for it since it was in the mother's utero. When it was born the mom didn't hugged it. The one who hugged it was his dad. That's explain the difference between the mother's bond and the father's bond. He was angry with his mom because he was feeling like she didn't accept him the way he was. Like she didn't want him and she didn't know how to connect with him in order to fix their relationship

SPOILERS AHEAD. DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE FILM It was said in the film that he was a smart kid and I genuinely believe he hated his mother for no good reason and enjoyed torturing her in the ways he did, but that doesn't excuse his overall behavior. When his mom was around he would immediately do some weird stuff but when his father was around he'd put on a smile. When the mom tried to bring up Kevin's behavior the dad brushed it off every time and said: "he's a good kid" which we all knew he was not. She tried to connect with him and every time he did something to push her away and he did that since he was young. He could speak but didn't speak to her because he simply didn't want to. It was very clear to me from the beginning that Kevin was either sociopathic or psychotic cuz he got a kick out of making his mother miserable. Then when the sister was born he killed her pet, in my opinion, a pretty brutal way knowing the mother would find it the way she did. And he freaking blinded her with cleaning solution and again the father brushed it off when the mother told him she believed Kevin was responsible. I don't think the mother or the father is to blame necessarily responsible for how he turned out. The father had no clue since he acted like an angel with his dad. The mother knew something was wrong with Kevin but didn't believe there was much she could do and I think she loved him deep down despite the things he's done but still couldn't understand why he did what he did to the students in his school. So I think the people blaming the mother should stop. In some way that justifies what Kevin did and there is no justification for it. He knew the difference between right, wrong, and horrific. Kevin was just crazy straight up. No reason behind it. So I think he killed his dad, his sister, and all those people because he could. He pre-planned his act as we know from the locks he ordered. Something was very clearly wrong with him from the very beginning and in my opinion, there was nothing that could be done about it.

Kids always play off parents. My daughter is acting like pre teen (is surrounded by teen siblings) with attitude I am getting recently. She is 8! Goes to her dad she is an angel. Has her own room and toys there while here she must share her room with 3 older sisters . She is the oldest/first grandchild on his side but the youngest child here. She seems to be in a precarious sitution on her actual placement in the wider family circle. She is maturing faster than her siblings but is also holding on to elements of her actual age. First borns get treated different to other siblings. My oldest son might have got the brunt of it . As a parent its the first time experiencing new challenges as a parents. Next in line gets it easier. The youngest usually get it the easiest of all. Son is at the age were there is mutual understanding. There has always been fiction. We are to a like in personality . Was going to cause a tough situation as he became more independent.

i heard the novel was told exclusively from the pov of the mother, which sounds like it would be a difficult character to spend any time with, to say the least.

@chrisgeronimo The book is amazing. I agree that it's best to read it first. I am always wary when novels I like are made into films. I learnt a sore lesson with 'The Time Traveller's Wife'. This one certainly has big shoes to fill. I might avoid paying money for this and wait for it to come out on Digital etc. That way if I'm disappointed with the adaptation I can rage in the comfort of my home :-)

Ill have a number nine is it though? I got the opposite. Its hinted heavily in the movie that this is what happens when a mother doesn’t love her child. So they’re blaming nurture here not simply stating he’s naturally evil, if you really payed attention

@TheLama003 It's kinda left open. Was he naturally evil from birth? Some evil gene just inherent in some of us that can't be stamped out? Or is it that his mother couldn't love him, felt no attachment to him when he was born? Who knows. I read the book... Even if his mother didn't love him, that's no excuse for what he does.
