I don't see why storebought cow's cream wouldn't work! Just make sure there are no stabilizers added. Cultures and enzymes are ok! Please let me know what you think of your own homemade cultured butter and buttermilk!

Tried churning my store brought sour cream for over 30 minutes and while it does get runny, it doesn't seem to separate 😭 The packaging doesn't mention any stabilizers not sure why it isn't working 😢

Where do you buy RAW Cultured Sour cream? The store bought cultured sour cream with enzymes has milk in it and won't work.

Yes that’s the best way, that’s the way my mom always made it, she would fill the churn an sit it behind the stove and let it sour. I still make it this way with cows milk. Lot of these old traditions have been lost but are coming back, I guess I have always been a homesteader because that’s the way I was raised but I’m an oldtimer now! Lol good memories of the past. Keep up the good work teaching the old ways.

Salt was historically used to preserve butter. To utilize it you had to kneed it in cold water to dissolve it away the salt, than you can eat it.

Thank you Heather! This is a GREAT video!! I've made lots of butter, but never from sour cream! Definitely want to try that now!! I just skim the cream from the milk so it takes me quite a while to get enough to make butter. I have a separater but I find it difficult to get as clean as i feel it needs to be. Not sure anymore of the brand, have had it many years, what is yours like? Now I'm all excited to make butter!!! Do you have a good recipe for cottage cheese? I haven't found one I'm totally happy with yet! God bless to you & your family!
@SageandStoneHomestead
@SageandStoneHomestead 2 жыл бұрын
To make cottage cheese we have just left the raw milk out on the counter to clabber! The curds are not as defined and textured as store bought cottage cheese. I would love to figure that out too! If I do I will let you know. I have the Slavic Beauty cream separator (from Caprine Supply) and it comes apart (many pieces) very thoroughly and can definitely get totally clean. I don't want to use it more than once a week though because it is a process to break it all down. Not difficult just tedious. Right now I get a quart of cream from 2.5 gallons of milk, but that's with it set at a pretty thick consistency. I need to play around with that! Definitely let me know when you make butter with sour cream!

That's awesome! I had no idea you could make butter from sour cream. It does make sense. I really love all you videos. I saw a commercial that the one of the Vitamix can make almond butter very quickly from almonds. I wonder if it would make regular butter quicker than the KitchenAid Mixer would?

Did your cream clabber/sour on the counter or in the fridge? How long did it take to sour/clabber? Did it take on any goaty taste?

Sour milk wouldn't work because you can only get butter out of cream. You can do things with sour raw milk but I wouldn't try to do anything with sour or rancid pasteurized milk. ♡

Can I use cows 🐄 cream instead of 🐐 goat milk cream ? Great 👍 video
@SageandStoneHomestead
@SageandStoneHomestead 2 жыл бұрын
Yes just make sure if you're going to let the cream go sour that it is raw cream. Letting pasteurized cream sour would be a bad thing, as the cream would go rancid and not be cultured like with raw milk. You can use fresh sour cream from the grocery store as long as it doesn't have ingredients besides cream and culture! 😊

Does the butter taste like goats? I remember someone putting goat milk in my tea once and I wasnt keen on the goat taste.
@SageandStoneHomestead
@SageandStoneHomestead 2 жыл бұрын
Some goat milk tastes like the farm. It would depend on what the milk tastes like! Our milk from our Nigerians has that "goat" flavor because of the high butterfat content, but the LaMancha milk is very clean tasting like cow's milk!

@@SageandStoneHomestead Have you thought of trying to make clotted cream? It is a thick almost buttery cream that we Brits put on scones etc. You need a rich cream and I know it needs to be heated for the clotted cream to form. There are recipes on the internet - the milk/cream has a high content of butterfat.

can I turn my curds and whey into butter? or just cottage cheese
@SageandStoneHomestead
@SageandStoneHomestead 2 жыл бұрын
For butter you'd need to use cream. The clabber curds won't cream nicely and stay clumpy and a tad gritty when you mix them up. If you want you can make almost a ricotta out of them but not butter. If you want to make butter you need to use cream and whip it into butter. Let me know if you'd like me to link you to a butter video! ❤
