To be frank, I didn't like the last movie, and I didn't enjoy her character. That being said, she's an actor, she's just playing a character. She didn't deserve any of it. She even seems like a person I'd love to get to know. And I'm with Dan on the vocal minority.

I didn't realize how impacted by these problems the female members of SJU are. It's brought much meaningful context to ScreenJunkies' recent Women in Film event and their approach to video content as a whole. At least they're having this conversation so we as an audience don't have to (as frequently)!

MagickP00dle The Right is already doing this. It is a tactic utilizing compulsory happiness, comparative suffering, and false equivalence. It is a tactic they use to evade a substantive debate about the status quo and ongoing issues, by essentially derailing one's argument and turning the topic into whether or not you are a positive person. It is disingenuous.

Snow thats not the point. The point is, the negative are always the loudest. It's the fact that people aren't treated as people and everything's a bummer right now. Making one person smile for a second by taking the effort to say something kind to them is way harder than attacking them and ruining their day.

I think the worst thing about TLJ is the hatred that it just seemed to get out of fans that they feel the need to go and attack people that have a different opinion, or attack (not criticize) the actors, producers, director and all of those people just because they didn't like it. I personally loved TLJ, but I get why some people really didn't like it and that is ok. People need to chill out. It is just a movie. If you don't like it, just go watch the old trilogy, you can get them all on blu-ray or on iTunes right now!

A really good, thought provoking show today. I'm one of those people that usually stay away from the comment section because I don't want to feed the trolls, but I often just read through it. And it saddens me to see all the hate and anger. I never understood, why people have to attack others for their opinions. When I don't like a movie, I don't watch it and I don't pay for it, but that doesn't mean, that others can't love it. For example I really loved The Last Jedi, watched it three times in the cinema, but that doesn't mean, I can't understand the criticisms. For me they just don't weigh as much or take away my enjoyment of the film. But than I go to social media and this wave of hate greets me and I don't understand why people are so mean. I feel really sorry for Kelly and I completely understand, why she did that. Sadly there is little we can do. But anyways, really good show today. I love you guys so much. You always sweeten my day and you are awesome people. Happy to see Roxy and Danielle, you are the best. You are powerful women and a shining light for the rest of us. Keep the good work up. And of course Roth and Dan, always with the heart and the fun and the understanding. Our opinions of movies often clash, but that doesn't mean you are wrong, just different and that is alright. Love you.

i didn't like the whole finn/rose adventure story-line in last jedi. But that hadn't nothing to do with actress abilities or physical appearance. I actually enjoyed watching her do press for the movie cos she came across very likable and happy to be there. I would be just as happy watching her in future movies outside of star wars. I just don't think that character suited the tone of the movie and when it kept cutting back to their story it took me out of it little.

Dan shouldn't question whether movie fights is something that is contributing to this. Movie fights is a nice open platform where you can express your movie opinions (within a given time frame, which is important) with the chance to listen to opposing opinions and give them logical refutations. The topic of this video is just people letting their love of certain intellectual properties overpower their sense of humanity and compassion and it is really sad that this has probably managed to taint Kelly Marie Tran's experience of being part of the Star Wars Universe

The sad thing is people seem to lose empathy for others when they go online. We're all just humans with opinions and feelings that can be hurt. Years ago I sent an email to an AP movie critic and I think i was critical to the man on a personal level. He emailed me back and called me out on my behavior. He made me realize I didn't have to be a jerk to someone to make my opinion known. I apologized to him and articulated point in a more constructive manner. I am glad he called me out on my crappy behavior and it's a shame we can't get everyone to be more aware of how they communicate online.
@Heartsapien

Thank you for having this discussion. It's exhausting even as a passsive observer seeing this kind of stuff happening and hearing your stories, I can't even imagine how it feels. I think online harassment today is a symptom of a larger societal problem where we've all been kind of slowly isolated over the last 15+ years. You can pick a news channel that will talk about what you want to hear, read a website that only covers what you like, go to a school that excludes certain subjects, etc. This atmosphere of a subjective world, tailored to our interests just puts us further into our bubbles and cuts off civil discourse. It's always been frustrating to me when an app or site filters content for me because I don't know what I don't know or what I might want to learn about. So some of it is on these platforms like you all were talking about. As for solutions, talking about these issues is a great start just to get people thinking about it. Intentionally seeking people out that have a different opinion or perspective (preferably in person) and just talking to them has been helpful in my own experience because it does add that human element back into it. Ok I'm just rambling now, but anyone who reads this I hope you have a good day!

Matt B It is a movie. It is art. Art has always expressed opinions. You don't have to like the movie, but why should you have to get so angry about it. You are the problem. I've been a SW fan for years now, but I struggle with it. Not because I don't enjoy the material or I've grown fatigued, but the community has become less about enjoying the material and more about bashing it without even trying and just cynical circle-jerking. I don't resent anyone who has a differing opinion or taste, I just don't like how this negativity is omnipresent. I go to check out a new Star Wars book review or some new nugget of lore, people are complaining about the new movie. If you want to vent your feelings or opinions, fine, do it in the appropriate sub reddit or youtube comment secyion or whatever. If you want to see the Star Wars fandom at it's worst, check out r/saltierthancrait. It's a subreddit entirely dedicated to compiling complaints about the new movies and is a place where people vent their frustration, and it has some of the silliest complaints I've ever seen.

BattleUp Saber Rian Johnson and a few others at Lucasfilms keep adding fuel to the fire by attacking people who did not like the movie. So unfortunately there are some fans who take things to the extreme as a response. The last transformers was complete and utter trash but the studio did not attack the fans hence there wasn't a toxic atmosphere like with star wars.

BattleUp Saber Seeing as how Rian Johnson talks back to "toxic fans" on Twitter without the self-awareness to wonder if so many people having issues with TLJ might be something he wrote... I do think that Rian Johnson decided to attack when he thought that enough was enough... you didn't like the movie, that's alright... but if you attack everybody around the movie saying that they are this and that and they ruined your existence because of a movie, I think you are having a mental problem. You are clearly not happy with your life and need to attack people to make you feel better about yourself... And at some point, Johnson felt that he needed to address this... But the thing is, you just feed the haters when you do that and you can't win... I think we will need a system someday on the internet so that people become accountable of what they say. Attacking people is not the solution...

I'm so glad you guys talked about this and at length and I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on the subject if you do ever decide to elaborate at some point. When I was fourteen or so I was very "protective" of some fandoms I was apart of, not to the extreme lengths that some people in the Star Wars fandom are but I was very quick to voice my opinions and "attack" people who would say a bad word about the thing I loved, on one hand you can somewhat empathise with the people who are upset about some things and I can absolutely understand the feeling of "owning" a certain franchise and someone changing it so dramatically can feel like a personal attack, but having grown up and matured I can 100% see how wrong it is to take ownership of a public property that I had no hand in creating therefore have no right to feel attacked or offended because it wasn't what I wanted. Movies aren't like a personal service to you, they aren't the waitress that accidentally spilled your drink on you or acted unprofessionally therefore warranting a complaint to the manager, movies are like a painting, if you like it, you compliment the artist and enjoy its beauty, if you don't like it you move on to another painting that you do like, you wouldn't try to make the artist feel worthless because their own personal art wasn't to your taste, you just wouldn't. To all the people who didn't like The Last Jedi or Kelly Marie Tran, don't watch the movie, don't engage in the media surrounding it, you literally have free will, you can just move on. Preferred Empire Strikes Back? Go watch that instead and leave people alone.

Nicole B uh hold on a sec. first of all it’s fine to dislike a performance or certain aspects of a movie. Doesn’t mean that you NEVER want to watch any part of it again. It’s just when racism and such gets involved or personal insults for someone who none of us know personally that it goes over the edge. People debate which Star Wars movies they like all the time and before TLJ it never really got to this vitriolic level
@nicoleymcquack9785
@nicoleymcquack9785 6 жыл бұрын
Son Goku I never said that people can NEVER watch that movie again, I mean that the people who decide to be so toxic about a movie that they hated then they are more than welcome to just move on rather than ruin the movie for everyone else and harassing the people involved. People are entitled to express their opinions whether they are positive or negative, but anything hurtful or abusive is just unnecessary when they are perfectly capable of removing themselves from a certain community of a movie/franchise that they no longer like. If they disliked a movie but still want to rewatch it and interact with its fandom then that's fine so long as they keep any and all toxic behaviour out of it. Everyone knows that the Star Wars fandom has been like this forever but maybe now is the time to call them out on it because no matter how long they've been doing it, it doesn't make it any more right or acceptable.

Danielle's point about people being shocked about the negative backlash if very important!! Minorities like people of color, queer people, women and people that don't have a certain physique get the worst of those hate comments and as Dan said too white cis men are now realizing and experiencing that this is a part of the whole social media issue. I just hope as a bigger, open minded society we can move past this stage of aggression and divisiveness and you guys so openly discussing it is one step into the right direction I think! Guys, Im 25 and I love my starwars, my Tolkien, my power rangers, etc. when people are online bullying or spreading hateful comments what do us others do? I’ve been stressing and realize I have been feeding trolls trying to confront the hate, not spread it and stand up for the others being bullied. It’s to the point where it’s got in my head and although I don’t believe “ ruining my childhood” is a real thing, it’s tainted my fandom because I don’t feel like that community is what it’s supposed to be. Just my two cents

Thank you for keeping this a relevant topic. It's too easy to gloss over the declining lack of respect, responsibility, and empathy in social media and frankly, in the world. It's too easy to become dulled and to say, "just ignore it," "leave social media," "get a thicker skin..." blah blah blah. It's too easy to be complacent. It's too easy to blame the victim. It's a lot more difficult to be introspective and really examine how each of us an individual may (intentionally or not) be promoting this atmosphere, and what we can learn and evolve collectively as a society. It's also a lot more difficult to step up and discuss the abuse you've been dealt with in the media - kudos to Roth, Roxy and Danielle. Kudos also to Dan for acknowledging that as a white male, he will never experience half the crap that others receive. At least you all give me hope that this society isn't always finding a way to lower that bottom line.

This was a mature and well reasoned argument for more compassion and empathy. I’ve never commented on a KZfaq video before despite being a long time fan, out of the fear you describe in participating in what can be a really hateful space. "Well, it's the Internet. The Internet has always been like this," shouldn't be a viable excuse. Being physically threatened with violence or sexual assault or bodily harm is a crime in the real world, but online it's not. If a park was an unsafe place, would you sit there and just say, "Well that park has always been like that," or would you try to change something about it. They're not just trolls anymore. These are people who know what they're doing is terrorizing another person and they DO. NOT. CARE. If the Internet has always been like this, then let's change it

I am glad that SJ address these topics. The world needs more love. I cannot help but think back to the unbelievable tragedy that occurred when a milkman gunned down several girls in the Amish community. This horrific event - which is incomparably worse than someone making a movie that "ruins your childhood"- even if it literally did ruin your childhood - was met by the Amish with forgiveness, love, and healing. Let's have more of that type of attitude with each other. This is not meant in anyway to be a criticism of Ms. Tran for withdrawing from social media. Rather a call to change for those who would wrongfully criticize and revile someone.

I'm a 52 year old Star Wars fan. It was bad enough hearing about Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen being attacked for playing a role. Now it's just freaking ridiculous and I am disgusted at how toxic something I've loved ever since I saw A New Hope at the Egyptian Theater back in 1977 has gotten hijacked by entitled fanboys who have been fed a steady diet of "nerd/geek spaces only belong to US". We female and non-white nerds/geeks have ALWAYS existed, even if we didn't show up to conventions or wear our nerdom outwardly. Sorry, not sorry but the world is changing and it's okay if everything isn't centered around 18 to 35 year old white guys. As a lifelong nerd, I didn't rant and rave that Luke Skywalker didn't "represent me" because he was a white guy. His desire for adventure, his idealism and naivete DID represent me, as it probably did with a lot of kids (and adults). And, he was kind of cute, lol. On the other hand, it was also great to discover Storm, who not only shared my skin color, but the feeling of being an outsider. Both of those feelings were valid. This is why the media has such power. Can you imagine how different things would be if we'd had a truly inclusive media from day one? As far as Kelly Marie Tran, I'm so sad that something she was excited about to the point of sheer giddiness, has been cruelly taken from her by a bunch of small-minded keyboard warriors who'd never say those things to her in real life. Now, have I liked EVERYTHING about every Star Wars film? No. But I'm not going to act like a butthurt jerkwad because of that. I just write fanfiction, lol. Lastly, I just need to get this off my chest: I am SO tired of this endless bitching about "feminists and SJW's". If someone's criticism of the franchise begins or even contains those phrases, I already know they're not interested in another point of view. "Forced diversity" is another phrase that makes me go red with rage. These people don't even realize just how socialized they are to view only one kind of hero/heroine. Anyway, I'm glad this discussion with actual thoughtful and diverse fans exist. I had to scrub my KZfaq notifications of all the entitled fanboy rantings. Not sorry for that either.

Well. I wasn't expecting all of *this* when I clicked over today, but I'm grateful for the honest conversation. I'm just some guy but, allow me to say a few words. First, and it's a sad day indeed when it actually needs to be stated outright, but the attacks on Kelly Marie Tran are flat out indefensible. Period, full stop. There's a conversation to be had about whether, and to what extent fans of a particular IP have the right to put forth their opinions on a product. I'm going to say it; Rian Johnson posting pictures saying, "Your Snoke Theory Sucks" and Kathleen Kennedy posing in tee shirts that say, "The Force is Female" is, frankly, *not helping matters.* There's an argument to be made that provoking fans in these kinds of ways invites pushback. But that is another conversation, for another day. I want to talk to, and about the ladies who told their stories on today's videos, because it was eye opening, painful and more than a bit terrifying. I'm here on SJU most days; I don't always comment, but I try to check in to see the shenanigans. There are a few other channels that I try to get to each day. On each of those channels, I have tried to make myself part of their community. If I can take Dan's analogy for a moment, I am (or at least try to be) one of the 9 people who will walk by, smile and say hello. But here is the thing. I'm also the guy who would wrestle to the ground the one person who chose to punch Dan in the face. In plain terms, we need to look out for one another. You see something, *Say* something. This is a pretty awesome group of commenters, so I'd be frankly shocked to see hateful, racist comments here, but Roth, Danielle, Roxy, I've got your backs, ladies! If I saw a hurtful or misogynistic comment, I would comment back (even at the risk of being called the dreaded White Knight). I'd report them. I'd do anything that language allows to make sure it's known that their comments are not welcomed. Wow. Didn't mean to put up a wall of text here. It's doubtful anyone will take the time to read it all, but the Internet is forever and I not only stand by these words, I'd proudly sign my name to it. Anyway..love you guys. Mike

MrMike11233 great points, did read all of it ;). There's an argument to be made for ignoring such comments or going against them, I suppose it's a case by case basis. Thank you for saying all that. Yes, I strongly suspect that *you* would be shocked and appalled by what gets said on the internets to women and people of color. It gets beyond disgusting. I personally would defend anyone's right to an opinion (especially an honest and thoughtful opinion), but hatred (as mentioned here of Kelly Marie Tran) is not an opinion. Just because some executive or creator "stirred up trouble" by posting something that could be inflammatory, is still no excuse to respond with hatred, bullying, or threats. In a legal sense, individual freedom of speech ends at liability: defamation, slander, harassment, bullying, threatening violence, are all illegal to some degree.

MrMike11233 I read it! Great post :-) BUT, there is one thing you said that I quickly want to comment on: About the Kathleen Kennedy T-shirt-thing. I believe, that when MOST people see that shirt, saying «The Force is Female», I think they interpret that as: «The Force is ONLY Female, and we HATE MEN». But what I don’t think most people realize, is that it actually just means: «The Force is ALSO Female». And that’s purely a GOOD THING! Again, I repeat; «The Force is ALSO Female», not «ONLY Female». And it’s not even supposed to be directed at anyone that disagrees with TLJ or anything like this AT ALL. It’s PURELY just to promote female voices in Star Wars, purely a positive, lovely, and well-meaning message. But people just read into to it way too much. I don’t know if you agree, but, well, that’s my two cents, anyway. :-) Have a great day.

This just makes me sad. Hearing about Roths experience had me especially shocked because I think the is one of the most likable people on the interwebs... I don't think that deleting your social media is the solution, but I understand why one would do that in this situation. I don't think that people that harass someone online or in real life do it because of their fandom, I think they have a bigger mental problem then just not liking a performance. I'm pretty sure people like that use social media as an outlet for their anger about their own life.

Guys, excellent content as always. Question: don’t you think some of the blame falls on Lucasfilm’s initial response to the films detractors? Rian Johnson, JJ, Kathleen K., etc said anyone that didn’t like the movie must be sexist, unintelligent, racist, etc. I think some fans took that as a “call to arms.” Not saying I condone their behavior (or the abusive language), but don’t you think that escalated the hostility? How much easier would it have been for Rian Johnson to say, “well, some people are entitled to their opinion. If you didn’t like the movie, I’m sorry.”

A big problem is how the context of those statements can be warped to make them seem more divisive than they are. If they're having a conversation about fans who are directing anger towards them and they say that racismn, sexism, etc. was the source of it, it can be aggregated to then become "anyone who dislikes this movie is racists or sexist". Understanding the context of the situation is essential because when we're talking about fan hate we're talking about unnecessary outward aggression not "anybody who didn't like the movie". Comes down to the communication lapses and the filter at which we consume the details of the story. Everyone's actions play a role. The creators, outlets like us, and the fans as well however one specific part of that equation are actively entering other peoples personal space to voice their dissatisfaction. "Not liking" something shouldn't have to be an active task. Nobody is doing this perfectly but there's a specific aspect of the problem that is externally seeking to bring people down. Rian Johnson isn't replying to my personal tweets about what I ate for breakfast with "here's my opinion on how not good you are at your job"

Dan really said what I have been talking to people about in the last few years, how I feel these new generations have been slowly robbed of what I consider the opportunity of real empathy. They have spent their lives in glow of a computer screen in a void of human interaction that helps imprint and develop empathy, but we have also given people the platform to create their own digital reality and it often seems as if they determine what's values and priorities are important, its alienating, this technology that was supposed to bring the world together is driving us further apart as a species. I would like to thank Screen Junkies for taking the time to navigate and discuss such an important and impactful issue, keep up the good work :*)

I don’t know a solution I’m a Star Wars fan I didn’t like TLJ at the same time it’s a movie I moved on shortly after as I have work, kids, pets and life to worry about. The cause of this new way of interacting is a combination of the self-esteem movement teaching us we're all special, and the fact that no one feels *heard* anymore. When you don't feel like people are listening or understanding you, you yell louder and become more aggressive. Self-esteem taught us we all deserve to be heard all the time because we're special. Social media has only magnified the problem. Oversensitivity has complicated it too
