Yes, having the M23 ahead of the MP4/4 is just laughable, the 1988 Mclaren is simply one of the greatest cars ever made

In their defence, the MP4/2 and M23 both won multiple championships, though I’d have to agree that the /4 should be ahead of the M23.

Kevin Turner (Autosport's editor, who made this list) makes a compelling argument for why the MP4/4 was not the greatest McLaren on the recent Autosport podcast where they discuss the top ten in much more detail. I'd recommend giving it a listen. Personally, I'd definitely put the MP4/4 above the M23, but I do see why the MP4/2 is ranked at the very top -- before 1984, the most wins in a season for a single team was 8 out of 16 for Lotus in 1978. The MP4/2 redefined what it means to dominate F1, by winning 12 out of 16 races in 1984, then 6/16 in 1985, and 4/16 in 1986. It won the Drivers' Championship three years in a row, and the Constructors' twice. I'm pretty sure it was also the first carbon fibre chassis to win the title. In terms of drivers, yes Senna/Prost was the greatest driver line-up of all time, but Prost/Lauda in 1984-1985 wasn't far behind in my view! And another World Champion, Keke Rosberg, partnered Prost in 1986. So yes, the MP4/4 was more dominant and more iconic, but the MP4/2 was the car which redefined F1 domination, made huge technical innovations, and lasted much longer.

I think mp4/4 is always the best so anybody ranking mclaren cars should exclude mp4/4 because it's obviously the best

@@elliotcrossan6290 Would have won 2007 if they hadn’t royally fucked up. The -22 deserved 2007 as it was a better car that the Ferrari, as opposed to 2008 where the Ferrari was the better car.

@@yeah9377 Ferrari actually won the 2008 Constructor's Championship by 21 points, as Massa scored 1 less point than Hamilton, while Räikkönen scored 22 more points than Kovalainen. People say Lewis can only win in the best car, yet he's the only driver in the 21st Century to win the Drivers' title in a car which didn't win the Constructors' title, and he destroyed Nelson Piquet's record of most wins for a team without that team winning the Constructor's title the entire time he drove for them, as Piquet had won 13 races for Brabham with no WCC, while Hamilton won 21 races for McLaren with no WCC! Vettel has also broken Piquet's record since then, with 14 wins for Ferrari, though unlike Hamilton and Piquet, he didn't win the Drivers' Championship for the team. So yeah, sadly for Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, despite having the most beautiful livery in F1 history in my view, they never won the Constructors'!

I love Pierre Gasly and his victory was beautiful, but McLaren deserved to win the Italian Grand Prix more in my view. Sainz and Norris were running a clear second and third before the carnage ensued. As a fan of Hamilton from his McLaren days, seeing Lewis joined on the podium by a McLaren for the first time since he left Woking would've been beautiful -- as would a McLaren 1-2 given Lewis' penalty. As much as I loved Pierre's redemption story, what should have been for McLaren still hurts 😭

I agree. The MP4/4 was extremely innovative, both in terms of the small efficient engine and radical driving position. And the other teams being weak is not McLaren's problem. In fact, it makes the MP4/4 more impressive because they didn't make the same mistakes as their rivals.

FIA bans things for no reason, limiting innovation. There was no additional safety risk. F1 is no longer the “pinnacle of Motorsport” it only exists to placate billionaires and Ferarri’s marketing budget.

MP4/8 is, to this day, the most technologically advanced McLaren ever built. It was the best car, only let down by its engine which was outclassed by the Renault.

@@elliotcrossan6290It was a year old design fighting up to date opposition. They basically didn't upgrade that car all year while their rivals did. That's got to be a pretty good car to keep up. If you look at just the results on paper then yes it wasn't that good.

Agreed. Everyone loves the MP4/4 for it's supposed beauty, but it's not actually that amazing. Total bandwagon. Nice but there's better. The MP4/5B is the best looking, (closely followed by the 6) & also won the title but against the Ferrari 641 instead of only an internal battle. The 1989 spec 5 is totally different to the 1990 5B, huge aesthetic improvement in the B. V10 too, which is cooler than the V6 turbo of 1988 I think. The M23 won loads, and the MP4/2 & B, & C also. So they're more successful than the 4/4 which only lasted 1 year & had no competition.

Sadly, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes never actually won the Constructors' Championship. But I do agree that the MP4-22 and MP4-23 are indescribably beautiful, my favourite F1 cars of all time 😍

@@fredericobrait8237 the MP4-27 was about as fast as the RB8 in my view, but it was *ridiculously* unreliable. Shocking reliability, plus several strategy/pit stop errors from McLaren, and being crashed into by Maldonado/Grosjean/Hülkenberg, cost Lewis hundreds of points in 2012. Seb also had reliability problems, so if all things had been working properly for both, I think Lewis and Seb together would've dominated that season, having an equally tense title-decider in Brazil as in real life, while Fernando would've been a distant, but still phenomenally impressive third in that godawful Ferrari F2012. McLaren would've taken the Constructors' had they got their shit together, as they had the strongest driver line-up and a very quick car.
