Sand the majority of the handle before you part it off. The extra rigidity will make the sanding faster and more accurate.

If the lathe bed is long enough, make two handles end to end. It'll cut your chucking time by half. The drawback is you might not be able to go neck down to 10 mil. I absolutely loved the feeling of impending doom using it for the first time, as well as when the realization hits about using the machine from the wrong side :) Thanks for editing this all together! If you're going to have a 30 mil hole for sanding, consider having two holes, one for go and the other one for no go. That way you can QC the handle and correct on the next one if going undersize while sanding, avoiding a batch of undersize parts. And finally, I'm an armchair expert, so ignore everything I say :P Awesome video guys, thanks!

Watching that was cathartic. Nice job showing us how you prototype into a working model.

Question: Would it be possible to lathe 2 handles in tandem and cut them apart after?

There's always a way. Have you seen how ECE Emmerich make the horns on the front of their wooden planes? It's brilliant 👌

Matt, you could save on drilling the hole if you use the odonal jaws for the axminster chuck and they should fit into the v Groove that the Lathe leaves on the end, it should run more true aswell.

Instead of drilling a hole and using that brass adaptor could you not just program inn a step down and an extension long enough to chuck up your part for sanding? And then just cut it of when youre done.

You don’t need to turn it around, remove the shelving unit temporarily on the other side of the room and move the lathe over to that side in its current orientation. Then put the shelving unit where the lathe currently is…..!?

Let us all respect the bravery of this guys setting the control panel with emergency stop in the actual killzone of the machine. Sorry, just joking, not an expert, but it looks very wrong and dangerous. Love your videos :)

Carbide is quite brittle, did you chip the tip when you crashed it into the tail centre? Not sure but the rear one looked a bit ragged in one of the poplar shots.

Would an engine hoist fit in there to rotate the lathe around? 16:27 Also, is "it's mallet time" the woodworker equivalent of "hammer time"?

Change the tools for ones with replaceable tips. will be soo much easier to keep them sharp and your measurements accurate.

It’s too bad that the control panel isn’t to the right of the machine so you don’t have to stand in front of or walk past the spinning ballistic wood to use the machine

I think the heads placement is not meaned to do passes in both directions. When it cuts backwards only one of the heads actually cuts. Not an expert btw.
