Shawn and Mel, you have just witnessed one of THE female generals of American country music. She is the FIRST female singer to receive the Country Music Association's "Entertainer of the Year" award, 1972. In 1973, Loretta was the FIRST country music singer (male or female) to ever be featured on the cover of Newsweek magazine. These years were the heights of the Women's Liberation movement, and no doubt her music made an impact on society at that time, that a woman from poverty could school other women of higher classes about their strength and value as humans. Having grown up dirt-poor, she is known for wearing splendid long gowns with extensive bead-work and sequining befitting a wealthy woman, with her hair ornately styled, and continues this signature look in interviews to this day. Miss Loretta suffered a stroke in 2017, and though she may not perform, leaves us a 60-year career of songwriting and performing to enjoy and from which to draw strength. God richly bless and keep her. Her younger sister is singer Crystal Gayle who also enjoyed success in the late '70's-early '80's with classic hits of her own. Thank you for enjoying this song of faith, knowing thyself, and the power of a family's love; a message the world needs in today's times. God Bless You!

She is as real as it gets. A poor hill billy girl who lived through the depression as though things weren't tough enough. She wrote her own songs out of experience. Songs like this, you ain't woman enough, fist city, don't come home drinking, ones on the way etc is like a musical biography of her life. She went from living in a cabin in the Kentucky hills to now living in a mansion outside of Nashville and yet she still says she spends most of her time hanging out in the replica of the cabin she grew up in because she said she feels more comfortable there. Nope, ain't getting more real than Loretta.

That kinda thing lasts through the generations. All four of my grandparents were from eastern Kentucky (but not the coalfields - they were farmers). I was raised on stories of how they grew up and how they lived. It has forged my values (and also resulted in useful skills like gardening, canning food, sewing and crocheting - I spent a LOT of time with my grandmothers). I feel so blessed to have that heritage. I remind myself of my grandmother teaching 30 - 35 students in eight grades by herself in a one room school (coal stove, no running water) when she was 19 whenever I think I can't do something. With parents and grandparents like mine, you have no excuses. 😁

Loretta was born in 1932, and her story is almost the same as my parents (They grew up on hardscrabble tenant farms (sharecropping) in East Texas). There was no running water and electricity in their old houses (Loretta's mother and my grandmother had to use boiling pots of water, lye soap and scrub boards to clean their families' clothes and lighting was provided by old lamps using kerosene or coal oil). My dad would get in trouble if he was caught kicking cans because his father could only afford 1 pair of shoes a year for all of his kids, and there was a possibility of damaging the shoes by kicking them. Loretta had a replica built of the old house she lived in Butcher Holler, Kentucky after this song became a hit. Loretta's dad died of black lung disease in 1959, a result of his years of working in the coal mines. Loretta had a stroke in 2017 and is not touring.

I rwmwmbwe back in the 70s we wnet to visit my stepdads cousin in Kentucky. He owned several coal mines in the area and according to the family he was very well off... but the man and his family still lived in log cabins with running water or electricity. Granted it was way up on top of a mountain but I thought that was ridiculous

This is literally my mothers story. She was the 15th child and they lived in a two room house in the holler. Dirt floor and had to hand their shoes off to the next youngest. Grandpa was a tobacco farmer. She left home at 15 got married and started having babies at 15. Rest in peace mommy. You were a star and overcame so much.

My dad (now 86) is a huge fan of Ms. Loretta Lynn. His favorites were the duet songs she did with Conway Twitty. I heard her music growing up, but I never really paid much attention back then as I was more into Dolly Parton in my youth. Then I saw the movie - Coal Miner's Daughter (with Sissy Spacek, who won a Best actress Oscar & Golden Globe for her performance). Her discography is vast & impressive, with so many great songs. Some of them are down right hilariously funny... A few favorites of mine are - You aint woman enough to take my man, You're the reason our kids are ugly (OMG!), and The Pill (she sings about being fed up with getting knocked up & having one baby after another - LOL! Just like Dolly, Ms. Loretta is one hell of a story teller! :-)

Her daddy worked in the Van Lear, Kentucky coal mines. My grandaddy worked in the Wheelwright, Kentucky coal mines. It was a hard life but good people. Patty Loveless singing You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive is another song about our miners

I am not what you’d call a huge country music fan, at least not todays country…but I love a singer songwriter..and country music has many amazing singer songwriters .. Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton I think are two of the greats. Honest, raw talent. Self taught, they wrote songs about their lives, their feelings. And those are the best kinds of songs.

After hearing this song you absolutely need to watch the movie! I guarantee you will be so glad you did! It gives you more context of where so many of her lyrics came from.

Miss Loretta makes me proud of my roots. Often was told poverty makes a family appreciate its blood. Poor as all get out. Maybe always will be. But family is everything.

Facts!! Any hillbilly family knows about that. Mama worked just as hard as daddy!! We were thankful for everything! Unlike the disrespectful brats we've raised!! Just trying to give em more than we had. We should've kept them good old days of hard work & appreciation!!
