Oh! You must see the movie “Coal Miners Daughter.” Sissy Spacek played Loretta- an all time favorite movie of mine- phenomenal acting! 🧡❤️✨

My dad's mother was born in the coal camp Rhodell, West Virginia in McDowell County. How it worked then in the coal mines, the coal company had monopolies on housing, transportation and all goods they could buy. So the miner would have to go to the company store to get what they needed and pay rent in the house they lived in, but because they were all company owned, the miner would have to pay the coal company back at interest. Sure, they got a little money, the coal company got a little more back. There was a famous riot at Matewan, West Virginia. Miners and their families were being evicted and the miners organized the coal strike and the coal company hired Baldwin-Felts agency and law enforcement to shoot miners. So being a coal miner's daughter or son was a matter of pride for them. And just like Doolittle Lynn said in the movie "You born in the mountains you got three choices, coal mine, moonshine or move it on down the line". Thank you for reacting to this one. That line about getting a new pair of shoes in wintertime always gets me. We were lucky enough to have everything we needed. Even if we were a little crowded we got three carefully measured squares a day and the hand-me-downs did their job. But we did have to wait for Autumn to get our new pair of shoes and one good dress for the year. She'd put them on the Sears card and pay it off over the year. My mom would "help" me pick out a dress but they were almost old fashioned and I felt so embarrassed whenever I had to wear it. But I'd never mention it since she tried so hard to keep us pretty and decent and I couldn't hurt her feelings. But oh, how self-conscious all year round at church or any special occasion when I'd have to wear it. I'd hope next year's would be better. So this part of the song about the love of the dad and mom finding some way to get the kids new clothes...man I get weepy!

Loretta is still recording. She released a new album last year or the year before. During recording she had a stroke and had to stop work to rehab. I have the finished album. You absolutely cannot tell she ever had a stroke.

This song represents my mom's life story. She loved her daddy and he was a West Virginia coal miner and he was my hero as a boy. People don't know poor unless you grew up dirt poor in the Appalachian mountains. My grandmothers first husband was killed in a coal mine accident leaving her a widow with three small kids. The company he worked for evicted her out of company housing within days of his death. I got the opportunity to drive ny grandfather back home to West Virginia for a family reunion in the mid 80's. It was the trip of a lifetime and I learned to NEVER depend on the government or anyone else in this life. I got to see so many amazing, and sometimes heartbreaking things. One of his siblings who died as a child and the effort to build a homemade coffin for him because there was no money to buy one. A chance to tour a coal mine and see first-hand the horrid conditions those men endured. It was lesson I've never forgotten. I dont care who you are, we don't have things hard these days. Be profoundly grateful our elders worked so hard to give us so much.

A lot of us can't appreciate what previous generations went through. My Mom just passed three months ago (at 93). She was raised during the Depression on a farm in Oklahoma. Similar story - my grandma washed clothes with a washboard in water she got hot on a wood stove. Same with taking baths. Mom said she had so many chores she had to do before and after school including getting water from a well for the family and bringing in firewood. They had oil lamps for light and the only entertainment was music they made themselves. When she was 13 they moved to California and worked as farm laborers. After school in the fall my Mom would be in the fields with the rest of her family picking cotton (until her fingers bled). Again, most of us just can't understand what like was like for our older generations.

I remember the night she told David Letterman she loved squirrel meat. Loretta never changed from that little girl. Married Doo after a month at 13yrs. She said in an interview it was raining the day her and Doolittle married and her mother told her if it rains the day you get married it's all the tears drops you'll shed in your marriage. Loretta said Mommy was about right, she had cried that much over the years with him, but she loved him all those years. Fame and money never changed her and unfortunately didn't bring her happiness as one would think. But all that aside she has given us a gift with her songs, written with such raw honesty...can't think of a writer to equal. Thanks for spotlighting LL, she's one of my all time favorites.

My momma grew up this way. I can not here this song without crying. Loretta was my mom's favorite female artist of all time. When Loretta Lynn passed away it felt like losing my mom all over again .

People from our generation and younger have NO IDEA what it's like to be poor and struggle. This was really how Loretta grew up.

She wrote this song. It IS about HER life growing up. She wrote a book about it, and there was a movie made about it, COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER. Mrs. Lynn grew up poor, married at 14, had 3 of 6 children by 21, pushed into and encouraged to continue a music career by her husband (dedpite being a womanizing, abusive, alcoholic KNEW she could make it and continuously encouraged her. She actually ended up loving that career), and is now 88 years old, still releasing albums, and has a net worth of $85million. Still VERY down to Earth, humble, country girl who refers to her fans as her friends, remembering they are the ones who made and keep her successful.

Loretta Lynn is a Queen! She is in her 90s now and still recording music. Old school country at its best.

In 1986 she performed on USO tour on Camp Hialeah, Pusan, Korea. She was filming for ''Loretta Lynn`s Christmas Card `86''. Her son Jack served in Korea and drowned on their ranch in 1984. The death prevented her from doing a USO tour but she needed to get back to Korea for the troops. I am glad she did. To me the USO tour brought a piece of home 6700 miles. Another great I got to see was Bob Hope in Saudi Arabia and that's only 7200 miles! I give thanks to all the entertainers who travel for the troops.

Loretta Lynn is the co-queen of all female singers no matter what genre you choose (Patsy Cline is the other). I saw her in concert and she has one of the most powerful voices I have ever heard. Not too many can sing the way Loretta does. You should react to some of her classics like 'You Aint Woman Enough,' 'Don't Come Home a Drinkin,' 'Love is the Foundation,' and a more recent one like her duet with Jack White from the band The White Stripes called 'Portland, Oregon,' and some not so well known ones like 'Married Ladies' from her album called Who Was that Stranger! I could go on and on...................

My wife's grandfather and Loretta's father were brothers. Used to go up to eastern Kentucky for family reunions and all the Webbs would come. Loretta and her sister Brenda(Crystal Gayle) would sing gospel songs and tell stories. Great people. Takes a special person to live that life. No way I would go down into a coal mine.

Sad truth, we STILL have coal miners and their poor little kids; many dirt poor people up in the hills still. She had a famous mentor that took her under her wing, Patsy Cline was her best friend and really helped her break into country music. Thanks for taking me back to my childhood!

Gotta say, I got burnt out of "reaction videos." Same formula, folks listen to songs some of us grew up listening to, get orgasmic look, and fawn over it. Now & again you can see folks truly impressed. Never saw this channel before. I LOVE that you can tell she is really listening to and processing the words! Think I'll check out more videos. Glad I listened to my suggested videos. BTW for history, Loretta was IMHO the true Queen of Country Music. She was the 1st female CMA Entertainer of the Year!! Her dear friend Patsy Cline had started opening those doors, but Loretta kicked em down for good!!

My wife's grandfather was her dad's brother. We would go to family reunions at Jenny Wiley park near Prestonburg Ky and she and her sister Brenda would be there. They are salt of the earth. Never got above their raising.

I relate to this song so much. Life is hard in those mountains, people just got by but rarely complained. Women worked their fingers to the bone, hard physical labor, tough as nails women. Most had one baby after another, one on the hip one on the way. My granny's cash crop was tobacco. We all worked the fields or we didn't eat the following winter. We got one day a week off and that was Sunday for church. Just a diff kind of Harlem honey. I just can't understand what is going on today, these kids need to see what they got and find their opportunities and love and understand one another. People are the worlds greatest commodities.

Watch the MOVIE! Sissy Spacek did a great job portraying Loretta Lynn!! She spent a year with Loretta on tour learning her songs and mannerisms. They can't even hold a conversation in the same room now because Sissy automatically jumps into character...even to the point of finishing Loretta's sentences!😂 She didn't hit the stage until 1961, about 2 years AFTER her Daddy died, so he never got to see his COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER on stage.😭

Thank you for presenting the music of this incredible ion: Loretta Lynn. She certainly set the path for many artists, including men. There's a reason why she's the first female to win Entertainer Of The Year in 1971; the first female country artist to be certified a Gold LP from RIAA; the first to have a successful biographical movie...the list goes on. I had the incredible opportunity to meet this lady twice...loved her then and to this day.

I grew up on a tobacco farm with a one speaker transistor radio in our farmhouse kitchen playing this song in the summer's heat breezes thru our windows and the cold winters thru the maple and oak leaf-bare trees wind whistling outside. Lorretta's younger sister Crystal Gail also made quite a name for herself in the country music business. I Still remember her trademark insanely long hair, just like Cher's in the old days. I’ve heard this song my entire life but just tonight watched the movie. I thought I’d seen it but I was remembering a different Sissy Spacek movie I guess (I’ll have to ask my Mom) because I can’t believe I’ve gone this long without realizing just how much Loretta accomplished. I knew she was “dirt poor” growing up but I had no idea how controversial some of her music was in the 60’s & 70’s. As if she wasn’t already respected, knowing her story growing up & what she did w her life & her platform at a time when women simply didn’t have an opinion, much less one that wasn’t popular w men, is even more extraordinary. I hope you watched the movie because the song will hit even closer to home than it already does. Like I said, I’ve heard the song my whole life (born in the 70’s) & I just now fully understand how much she accomplished. It’s pretty damn amazing.

This is her real life story. She wrote something like 20 verses and they had to cut it down to this. I love this song. Loretta was very progressive for her time, and it’s a beautiful success story that she came from being dirt poor and she ended up living in a huge mansion, and she got there her way, with her talent and her perseverance. Loretta is a great lady.

I agree with a lot of the commenters' comments: you must watch the movie. Cissy spacek played loretta Lynn, did her own singing, and sounds just like Lynn. It's an academy award winning movie. Her sister is Crystal Gail, another wonderful singer. Loretta lynn is a character, tough country through and through.

Loretta has always been one of my favorite singers!! No matter how famous she became she’s always stayed close to her roots. I took my girls to see her in concert not long after she broke her hip & she came out in one of her beautiful dresses. She sat in a chair & took requests from the audience & visited with different people. After the show I’m sure she was tired but her granddaughter took a few people on her bus to meet her. She was the sweetest to my girls!! Gave them a memory to last a lifetime.
