VW VR6 engine was meant to be diesel and still has the diesel lower parts rods etc... not sure if the head has the casting blanks for the Diesel component's... but that engine + Lexus 450h hybrid transmission both motors running as motors and not a starter/generator + motor combination as standard... Could be worth experimenting with an engine see what happens ?? imagine a 500+bhp supercharged/turbo hybrid diesel + 200hp with the hybrid.....

@superjesus4307 technology has everything to do with it. There isn't a cabal of fairies deciding what gets made or not. Battery technology in the 90s wasn't even as good as in the 60s. Think about this. The fist hybrid electric cars were links to thr motor. The first electric cars took hours to charge for a 25-50 mile range. It isn't until charging speeds, capacity, and discharge rates improved that this is even possible on a semi. Trucks have road weight restrictions. This Edison truck weights as much as a truck and empty trailer combined. That means you haul less, earn less, but spend more money to purchase it. It's all about technology.
@Awakened133

@@sumduma55Maybe not fairies, But there are people who determine what tech and ideas are allowed. There’s a reason JP Morgan wouldn’t back Tesla. Morgan had a monopoly on Coal, Oil, Fuel, Steel, Mining, Refineries, Power plants and the electricity they produced. If we removed fossil fuels from the equation, People Like Morgan would have to have another market to capitalize on. Electromotive power is possible on smaller vehicles. I’m working on a charging system driven off a driveshaft to run an Inverter to charge batteries.
@sumduma55
@sumduma55 5 ай бұрын
@Awakened133 you might as well just say fairies. That's a fantastical argument that ignores freedom and one important thing, Elon Musk is not the only billionaire in the world. If the technology was such that it could be profitable earlier, rich people would even collaborate to make money. They do not suddenly and magically decide they like money but not if it was made thqt way. They would divest their other investments and ho make a lot more money. It's how rich people think.

I think a school bus retro fit could be a huge case flow for you guys, most school bus chassis are copy and past for space of engine bay and axel location. And if the school is already being forced into 400k per bus for all electric and you can sell a retro fit kit to keep the existing buses on the road that would be a huge market.

The problem is Edison Motor's solution won't be cheaper because no one is tossing out perfectly usable diesel school buses and replacing them with fully electric ones. Full electric is only being used (or policy-wise) when buying a new bus to replace ones that no longer are serviceable. It would be a hard sell to put all that money into a worn-out old bus. You're never going to make the money back in fuel savings. In addition, hybrid electric school buses have been out for more than two decades at this point, so they are not new. There's just not that much of a market for changing an old bus to hybrid electric.

My brothers and i sit around and talk trucks. We laugh at the E150, the Tesla Cryertruck, and efforts like that. We have all pulled stuff and know that if your gas mileage drops in half, your battery will drop at least that much faster as well. My truck has a 50 gallon tank, I think it would need to be ALL BATTERY in every possible place to get even close to the range of that tank. What YOU GUYS are doing here is OUT-STANDING! Its exactly spot on. LOVE the ability to do things like welding, running air-compressors or lights from the battery pack. In a tow truck or bucket truck running all the tools, lifts, winches, lights, and whatnot with NO rumbling diesel would be awesome. We have constantly said, the 'all electric truck is a bridge too far' with today's technology. Batteries might improve, true that, but even if the perfect battery landed tomorrow, we couldn't charge them all for a decade anyway!!!

Ok, some design hints. I got involved with Danfoss motor drives in 1983 and continued for 30+ years. Plus I have driven a Prius for over 10 - hybrids are a great solution. For retrofits: keep the differential(s) and hard-mount the e-motor. Short drive shaft etc so the wheels do their thing and the motor doesn’t bump around. Cars, pickups and utes travel at highway speeds whereas heavies don’t. Drop the transfer case for 4WD. Batteries go amidships where the trans was. You only need enough battery for the acceleration surges. It’s gonna be modelling the max vs. cruise etc demands that will challenge most, and big battery won’t be needed. I loved the video on Topsy towing the tank. For new machines, go to the builders and get chassis and body minus drive train. If you order enough pieces they will accommodate you. Fire trucks, ambulances etc do this already. Drive should be independent suspension with CV drives and one motor per axle. I.e keep the single-hard-mount e-motor per axle. Bonking the mass of the motor with ordinary wheel motion is a no-go for reliability. Best wishes for you guys, get in there first. P.S. I thought the Avro Aero was a cool plane.
@matthewsteiner7955
@matthewsteiner7955 5 ай бұрын
Absolutely everything this guy said. Don't beat up the motor by mounting on the axle, one motor per wheel (or locking/limited slip diff on solid axle) and mount the batteries between the frame rails, not in a box in the bed. It will be much more stable and you'll need every square inch of that bed space. But I would add that a solid mount motor also won't stress the electric supply lines by constantly flexing.
@kadmow
@kadmow 5 ай бұрын
@@matthewsteiner7955 - Slid-out trundle trays (equipment drawer) are very common in 0.5-1 tonne "Utes" in Australia - it is a location to install a battery - protected under the bed and between the Chassis rails. Simply replacing transmission with an E=drive is very simple (for RWD) - for 4x4 a back-to back motor unit makes sense - OR if there is enough power, AND LOW RANGE IS NEEDED, one e-drive on the back of a 2 speed transfer case (keep the entire original 4x4 system) - fitting the e-drive unit in the transmission tunnel, probably needs an epicyclic (planetary) reducer and high speed motor - small diameter.

@douglasvamateurradioandmore 5 ай бұрын
@rjlkc4668 I would rebuild the diff in my 2k f250 if I did that. I like the idea, keeps using existing parts. Would there be a problem with then needing adapter kits for differing axles. On old trucks, the old axles may be too rusted and worn for the power of a new electric motor? The old axles and differ may not be specd for that much torque.
@matthewsteiner7955
@matthewsteiner7955 5 ай бұрын
@@douglasvamateurradioandmore That's a very good point. You may want a more modern, heavier axle for an old truck but if the old axle is too rusted, what condition is the frame in? As far as different yokes for different trucks, that could be part of the ordering process. These guys seem pretty smart to me. I'm sure they could find a solution. My only point was that I wouldn't want a heavy electric motor bolted to the diff because every single bump in the road or trail will induce more stress on the rotating internals of the motor and constantly flex the electric lines. I wouldn't think that would be good for longevity. I can just imagine someone saying "500 horsepower, Yeeha, Full Send!" I could be totally off base. I haven't seen any shock testing of those motors.

Glad to see you two working together. From my perspective, I would aim for the biggest target you can with a new market/product. To me, that's something that fits the half-ton to 1-ton light trucks, the F150/1500 to F350/3500 crowd. I'd probably also simplify the first offering by making it just RWD. Steering axles are a pain and it just adds to the bottom line. Maybe you can even structure it so the base kit is RWD and then you purchase a front-axle kit as a complimentary piece. So every truck gets the RWD kit and then you just add extras to it like a second rear axle kit, a front axle kit, extra batteries, heavier axles, etc. That way you can start by making a kit the parts you have in front of you, while planning to release add-on kits for all the extra markets and uses in the future.

I think at the beginning the easiest group to introduce the diesel electric is the construction industry, as contractor trucks. And going more in depth if you were to make an example of converting a 04’ to 10’ F350,F450,F550, no one wants the 6.0/6.4 in their work truck. And I bet people would be willing to put those trucks into a conversion because they are fairly new trucks but just have a bad power plant.

Locomotives are diesel/electric because they have to get a loaded train moving and we cannot 54:33 build a fluid coupling/torque converter that would fit in that space. There is also the question of cooling. It can sometimes take several minutes to get one moving if stopped on a hill. Container ships have direct reversing Diesel engines. They can use this set up because the transverse oceans. In port, they may only be able to start their engine 7 times in an hour. They rely on tugs to maneuver. Tugs from the 1930s to the 1950s we’re either diesel/electric or direct reversible. After that it was feasible to put a reduction reversible gear on them. The problem with diesel/electric propulsion is that there is about 15% power loss in both generating and the traction motor. Dynamic position vessels may be d/e because it simplifies the relation between thrusters and propulsion engines. Nice thought though.😊

You know, lots of farmers with old rigs and trucks might see this as a new way to keep their old and even new iron going. The channel is excited about the idea because this the audience represents a portion of that 10 percent of trucks sold. I'm guessing that most of us with HD trucks also own half tons. The service application of the diesel generated electric are a niche market. My suggestion is build a half ton 4 Door short bed pickup that appeals to the majority of the market. Once the concept is proven then branch out into the niche heavy duty service, hot shot and tow trucks. Those people are the hardest to convert.

It could be the dump truck that tows your mow trailer charging batteries to be switched into the mowers, trimmers and blowers decreasing down time for charging and massively decreasing small engine emissions. Reasonably early on in the Edison videos Chace referenced that maybe if the Old Blue showed as promising a proof of concept as thought then maybe smaller trucks would have Edison kit(s) and I've been working over what combination makes the most sense ever since. I settled on non-dually 450 style axle, 10 bolt pattern with disc brakes as it hits all the favoured markers in the consumer truck demographic in North America. For those who insist on having 6 tires planted either an additional axle to make it a 6×6 or design an alternate hub to mount dualies instead and with a 450 axle the deflection should at *worst* reduce the capabilities to that of a 350 axle. As for width spacing the "Dually" add-on could come with fender flares since that'd save from axle width modification between the variants. Lastly it makes sense to run the axles heavier than what's anticipated for need given how significantly the axle's power draw drops as it reaches cruising speed as y'all proved with the Topsy C10 Sherman hauling test! Looking forward to watching this project unfold as well ❤

In 4wd applications it would make more sense to build a transfer case that accepts an electric motor. It would make installing easier with less wiring. The axles and suspension would stay the same and replacement parts can be obtained through local parts stores. The transfer case could also incorporate a parking brake similar to what an automatic transmission. It could also accept a PTO if needed. Hello Hello From Victoria!!! I hope you take a serious look at the simplest and most cost efficient form of kit. I did structural design and consulting before a car accident and have wanted to see this kind of project in Canada where we need it for so long. Going from the engine compartment and sending power straight to a rear diff or if it is a 4x4 then power straight to a transfer case would be a better conversion package. If you replace all the axles and suspension components the costs will be huge because you are needing to re-engineer everything to fit each pickup. Making conversion kits for semi trucks is easier because there are so few manufacturers that most components are all pretty standardized in configuration. Independent suspension, brakes and all the other brand specific components are all so different why make so much waste and obsolescence for a mod that could be kept much simpler? I get the need for a heavier axle first, but don't forget that yes there are 150,000 F450s or 550 service trucks on the road, but there are 700,000 F150s and 500,000 F250s on the road needing conversions. Good luck and I support every chance to showcase Canadian skill and ingenuity, because lets all Canadians "NEVER ALLOW ANOTHER AVRO ARROW SCREW UP" to tarnish our amazing future or history ever again. In our dozer it has a turbo, but it's whisper quiet without the turbo spinning. Your truck generator won't need a turbo. So that's pretty excellent... add the sound deadener in the engine bay like with F Tree Kitty and that C3.6 will be mostly unnoticeable even at its efficiency RPM which is only like 1100. It's certainly quieter than your typical Thermo King refrigerator trailer, probably as quiet or more than a newer semi APU. Oh that c3.6 is used in a range of cat machines from as low as 80hp up to 150, with 450-500 lb ft torque max w the turbo. Versatile engine

I have done work at Caterpillar plants where they would build loaders of various sizes. I did not work on the Caterpillar equipment itself but did work on the machinery that supplied the assembly lines with parts. Mostly work in what was called the Burn Barn where all the metal sheets etc. were cut out whether by laser or gas saws burn tables. It was quite an operation with the largest sheets being 2 inches thick. What I learned from Caterpillar was they had gone as far as they could with diesel powered loaders when it comes to size. The biggest reason was they could build larger loaders with larger capacities BUT they had to come up with completely new designs for axles and frames to not only handle the larger load capacities but mainly the larger diesel engines with their weight and torque loads. Caterpillar has been designing diesel/electrics now for at least 7 years but I do not know where they are in any final designs. What you are planning to do is different than Caterpillars plan to be like a train locomotive diesel/electric to get power with torque and less weight. Batteries for them would be impractical but your ideas it is practical and I am glad to see you are designing for a WORKING truck and not a "hey look at what I got" truck that has no real purpose. Like Edison said even the Hotshot haulers could haul heavy loads at less cost over the life of the truck. I will be watching the build closely since I am an electrical guy who designed some battery/house power equipment electric motor driven equipment. The equipment would use battery power to move the equipment into a plant such as a car plant where you can go half a mile or more before you are at the work area. Then the equipment was plugged into 480 volts and run on house power because of the large load requirements. It was concrete grinding equipment by the way. I also worked on material handling equipment large cranes that ran on a single railroad track but would put the car or truck after it came out of paint on a shelf in a large warehouse until it needed to go to trim. Oh well some old work war stories. I am interested to see how you do you regen charging and braking since the energy dissipation can be quite tricky when the loads vary and the equipment is in relatively in a free fall, going down hill or lowering a load straight down being close to same thing.

They explained it with Carl and Topsy, that you first use regenerative braking to put the kinetic energy into the batteries first. Once they're full, you engage the generator into the circuit acting as a motor fed by the axles, which then spins the engine, and you use Jake braking like a normal diesel truck would. Just instead of a drivetrain and transmission running backwards (power flow, not rotation), it's copper wires connecting the middle.

Between your two channels, you have me going down the genset road for some projects. Love it and can't wait to see what you guys come up with.

I can't wait. I'm excited for Edison and this is an epic pair up. But have we forgotten the "everything runs on smoke" episode? 😅

Great video and eager to see this collaboration. I agree that the Medium Duty truck is probably the best way to get the prototype/proof of concept work completed. Then as a Phase II, the 3/4 and one ton pickup could evolve, and then further down the road to develop a kit for the half ton market. Someone had earlier commented regarding converting RVs (thinking Class A). That could be very interesting, as another product line. Also wondering about a “powered” trailer axle - so the folks using Ford Lightning pickups would be able to go camping with a TT or 5th wheel and actually have the range to go somewhere.

I agree that this makes tons of sense if it's applied to work trucks. Having all electric tools/welders/compressors/hydraulics, configuring it all to draw power from the main truck battery, and having the diesel genset automatically maintain the battery makes a lot of sense in a lot of ways.

This really is the best damn idea. I'm pro EV, but the truck and diesel community and work environment is not ready for straight EV vehicles yet. We do want the fuel savings. We want the torque. Why can't we have it all? Wishing you guys all the best from the states. Proud of you guys for doing what major auto companies don't seem to have the balls to try.

You guys should consider what tesla has done with the 48 volt low voltage system. More current available to do work like steering and ac with smaller wires and connectors. Sounds like you all are on the right track to me. I will be watching!

I can't wait to see how quickly this whole process grows. I can easily see how some people may not understand why some vehicles may not be appropriate for what you visualize but maybe down the road you might be able to retrofit other lightweight rides. I think it would be a killer idea for some of the monster motorhomes that are built like a cinder block in a wind tunnel 😂

Ohhh... this makes so much more sense. I was planning on upgrading all my old iron to straight ev at some point, but this is much better. Once I seen the axels I knew it was finally time. I have a 3ton, 1ton 3/4ton and 1/4 ton. I refuse to buy any new junk that breaks constantly, and is over complicated. This timing is great. Now I just need to get my business going so I can pay for all of it.
