Just a Few Acres Farm

Just a Few Acres Farm

2 жыл бұрын

We're in the cake zone on beef production! (But it took eight years to recoup our initial investment.) Today we have the fun job of castrating the piglets, as well as checking on the cattle, doing the chores, cracking walnuts, and all the other fun parts of winter life on a small farm.
Note:
-We do not offer farm tours or accept visitors
-We do not sell from the farm
-We do not ship our farm's products
-We do not sell live animals

My mother died Sept 2019. And Daddy died Sept 2021. I'm now an orphan. It took me a whole year to finally stop thinking I'd call her with some sewing questions. But Daddy. . . .I still can't believe he's gone. But he was really struggling missing her. They were married almost 50 yrs. He spoiled her. There's 8 of us kids. Getting the estate settled. But I'd rather have my folks back. No more farm to go home to visit.

Howdy, boys, I knew you had chores! Every farm kid gets that joy. I don't say that sarcastically, actually, because it was joy. I just didn't know it at the time. 😄 Learning how to work hard is something everyone needs. The joy of using your body to accomplish something, and your brain to try to make a task a little easier---it doesn't get any better'n that, haha. Nice to see you, Henry and Drey, if I spelled them right? Oh, what a good feeling, being in the clear financially. Way to go!

Pete, your pastures & hay would be the envy of most wannabe graziers who try to do it "hands-off" with what we call 4-S pasture, Sage brush, saw briers, sassafras & 'simmons....No wonder it has such a wonderful beef flavor! This will be an interesting story to follow and as always, we really appreciate your willingness to think "outside the paddock". Experience is a great teacher but someone else's experience is a lot cheaper, ha! The guys have been able to connect the dots between turkeys in the field and what it takes to see them go into freezer camp. A supporter has donated a small greenhouse for them to work in this winter and we are persevering to assemble it. Everything is a lesson!

Never forget with out good grass and good cattle, grass fed beef will always be lack luster. Grass fed beef is the best beef product money can buy and it also is the most difficult to produce. Even harder is finding someone who can do it well. Thanks for you insight.

So very true. We currently feed grain because our pastures and hay are not as nutritious as it should be. We plan on reseeding, however, it will take 1 whole grazing season away because you want the root base to develop on the new pasture.

I love that your cattle are grass finished. Once grain is introduced that is where the omega-6 becomes out of the proper ratio that a human can safely consume. This is why beef gets a bad wrap for being unhealthy, except it is completely healthy when only fed grass.

I grew up on grass feed , milk, beef, poultry, and hogs. Having survived! And raised my family in the culinary industry, I think I realize the human pallet a little better. People today have a pallet for the butter flavor of corn finished beef. Yes there is a market for grass feed, but unfortunately MANY of the producer's do not take care of there pastures! Therefore you get the wild onion and other unpalatable flavors in there beef, milk, poultry. My opinion! You know what they say about opinions! LOL

Enjoyed the whole video. I am a long time watcher. The wife and I are hobby cattle farmers, and have worked to live a self sustianing lifestyle for years. Growing a spring, summer and winter garden, with the winter garden being one of the most enjoybable one because it takes very little work, for the amount of food it puts off from November thru Apil. We both hunt, and depend on 4=5 deer a year that we kill, for our meat. .We utilize that instead of eating beef, and I actually prefer it overall. We have chickens for our eggs, qne 2 deep freezers we have full of garden goodies and meat we process ourselvers, deer that is. We also have a big pantry full of dehydrated veggies, pumpkin, squash, cabbage, greens, tomatoes, that work well when rehydtrated in soups. We also have a couple hundred cans of canned veggies, soup stock, bone broth and canned pork, chicken, deer , and turkey. Being self sustainable in this day and times, of food shortages, and spotty supply chains, is a big help $$$ wise especially. And when you get used to eating, food grown and processed without any artificial additives, you will get to where you wont eat stuff that has been processsed this way. I tell the wife, I can tell when a veggie she has cooked, was grown in my ground, by the smell and taste, and it is true. Keep up the good work and videos, love them all.
