Anne Hathaway talks to BBC Radio 1's film critic Ali Plumb in part 2 of this interview from our archives. They discuss the film that landed her an Oscar, Les Misérables, and her work with Director Christopher Nolan in The Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar. She reveals how she originally thought she was going to be playing Harley Quinn, rather than Catwoman, and how she felt singing the iconic I Dreamed A Dream in Les Mis. Plus, how she endured what Matt Damon described as the worst costume ever.

I loved Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman. She played a real criminal, not a cartoon character, and her presence on screen was fantastic. I loved her style, she made long hair work with the character. The first time I was ever watching Catwoman more than Batman in any pairing I had seen before.

Same thoughts. Michelle is iconic in her 80's campy way, but Anne just brought that levity and a grounded feel of realism that sets the appropriate tone for the trilogy.

The Watcher I would’ve loved to have seen what his adaptation of poison ivy would’ve looked like. She was my favorite of the Batman villains and I think Uma Thurman‘s version would’ve been fantastic if she had been given a proper script, so instead of a serious 3 dimensional ecoterrorist, we wound up with a cartoon character. And I don’t think it’s shaping up to be any different in the DCEU.

If Anne Hathaway was born in an era with noble ladies, she'd have influence all over the kingdom since the "Anne Hathaway effect" doesn't clash with those views. Being too perfect of a noble lady with grace and elegance while fluently speaking and still being likeable would have worked for her. Too bad most people wants a human with glaring flaws so that they don't feel insecure about themselves. In truth, Anne Hathaway never really did anything wrong. She just tried her best and that should had never been a reason to hate her. And some people wonder why Anne isn't active on social media.
@martag825
@martag825 3 жыл бұрын
that "Anne Hathaway effect" was just pile of BS, written as a pseudo scientific excuse so some people could feel justified for hating her for no reason. don't they get it that she's just doing her job? she's an actress, an excellent one, but every time she's being interviewed or taking part in a show - she's promoting a movie which is a part of her job. she's just being professional.

@@martag825 Yesss Louder. I blame humanity for temporarily ruining her career and intensifying the anxiety problem she already have. She deserved more. The important thing is she's doing films again. If it was some other person in her shoes, they would probably never look back at the film industry. I love how she aced her roles in the Hustle and Ocean's 8. I'll be watching Witches sometime later.. Tbh.. I dislike the CGI and that it looked like a kid friendly film... But since Anne Hathaway's there as a villain (first time) then I'll watch it!

This may make me sound crazy but as far as I’m concerned Anne Hathaway is the best actress who has played Catwoman. Michelle Phiffer was good but every 90s kid I’ve known myself included think that it just comes across not as good camp but corny camp. The whole “she becomes strong, confident and embraces her sensuality because she gets brought back to life by cats and not on her own merit” is pretty lazy writing. Anne on the other hand comes across as a genuine character. She doesn’t do the annoying cat puns, her suit is practical, realistic and sexy, and she was equally seductive and intimidating at the same time which is Catwoman to a T. Plus I actually love the ending on how in this universe Bruce and Selina end up together, disappear and live happy lives.

Michelle Pfeiffer is Catwoman for all 90s kids. You seem to miss the point of her Catwoman. Yes its camp but its not bad. It's actually very psychological. You can argue that her Selina is mentally disturbed after getting pushed down a window. She snaps and imagines herself to be a cat with nine lives. When she probably made her outfit bulletproof. It's that layers of the character that works. That whole movie is actually a character studie about three dusturbed characters

I don't care what anyone says, I love Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. Of course Michelle phifer will always be the goat because of the suit(which we'll never see anything like that again with how crazy the fringe left has gotten), how great she looked and acted and the fact that it was basically a Catwoman movie smartly sold as a batman sequel. They're not even worth comparing because of how deliberately different the films they're in are. It would be like comparing Nicholsons joker against the other live action jokers.
