I've noticed that within the past few years, Disney has set the exit signs on rides to be off unless the ride stops. They used to be on all the time. Most likely this was done to preserve the magic and to discourage guests from exiting a moving ride.

Do we think that track in the other room is part of where they cut the track to make the rode shorter?

That room is a maintenance and storage area for the cars. Part of the old track is supposedly under the ramp to the current load area. You can tell because the floor feels different when you get closer to load. The current load, unload, and gift shop area used to be all part of the ride. The only thing left over from the original ride is the spiral staircase to the second floor.
