Keep in mind that DNA tests only go back a few generations... if you go back more generations it turns out we are all the same family. It's called evolution and has been proven and is fact.

1) Travelling on an empty Metro train, love how it's safe compared to 'Western' subways/ trains. 2) Spreading newspapers under the food on the floor, love it!😅 3) Kyuho has backache sitting on the floor...too much sitting in chairs like a Westerner😂😂 4) Sarah's Irish/Celtic heritage.. well the Newfies were from the SW of Ireland and NS had Scots so there's bound to be Irish/Celtic in there somewhere..and Spanish Galicia and French Brittany are also part of the Celtic family.

Finnish people are Ugric and part of the larger Central Asian Uralic family. That's probably why a lot of Central Asian/Mongolian-adjacent have some Finnish results. Finnish people also often get Central Asian % all the time.

The image of Kyuho helping his Mom prepare the Lunar New Year feast while wearing a pink apron with strawberries - love it! I was watching them prepare the jeon thinking how refreshing it is that Koreans still make food at home vs. North America where it's all store bought. Then I hear Kyuho's Mom talk about how her friends don't cook at home anymore :(.

The subway sequences are always much appreciated, especially when you film the landscape, I like to do that too, when I'm on the train. But I also loved that shot down the carriage so you got to see how many, or I guess in this case few people are on the subway with you.

As for the DNA, those are always so interesting. I don't think or believe there is anyone on this planet with pure 100% DNA of anything as it doesn't make sense, humans have always migrated and moved around.

I did one of those ancestry tests and the results were surprising but what was more shocking is that my first cousin whom I’ve never met or knew existed found me because of it. Of course I was wary at first but after a few questions that only close family would know the answer to, we determined that it was actually her! We speak regularly now. 😊

Sarah, I’m so glad you have such a delightful relationship with your mother-in-law! She is such a sweetheart! I laughed,however, watching all the various positions Kyuho ended up in while helping his mom, and meanwhile she just powered through. She is definitely top tier! I’m glad she can now make her own choices as to what to cook and how much. Hearing her stories from before were so sad.

Saaaame 🥲❤️ She’s amazing and I always appreciate that she’s strongly opposed to passing down the burdens/stress she went through as a daughter-in-law. Hi Sarah! Hi Kyuho! Kyuho….Cousin! I’m your American of Japanese descent cousin. I wish! 🤭 I’m definitely going to look into getting this test kit. Our son did his, and it shows 2% Inuit on my side. I love the reaction that you both received from Beemo, when you asked him about testing his DNA. I actually want to do that for our new dog (Mia), that we rescued off the streets at Christmas. She looks like a Black Havanese. Happy Lunar New Year guys! I so love watching your mama cook, Kyuho! Sarah, you’re so lucky, because you get to learn from THE BEST! I love that Kyuho’s mama is carrying on the traditions of the many tedious, but delicious dishes. My mom did as well. She’s been gone for 11 years, and my son made sure that I carried on the Japanese Oshogatsu/Osechi traditions for my side of the family. This is the first year that I couldn’t host, because we did a full kitchen remodel. I plan on doing it really big on 1/1/25. Thank you both for sharing these very special occasions with us. Kyuho and Sarah, your editing is always perfect! You pair it with THE most soothing music. I absolutely love your videos and always always look forward to them, every Sunday morning. Take care! I’m so glad that you’re both healthy once again!

Happy Lunar New Year! I always look forward to the holiday vlogs. So my family has done genetic testing and a lot of Genealogy and we have a lot of Irish and Iberian as well. They are the ones connected together because, from our understanding, there was a lot of mixing of Iberian blood into Irish communities due to Spain and Portugal being one of the biggest maritime countries for many years. There would be Spanish ships that crashed on the Irish coast and they ended up mingling with the Irish. That is the conclusion we have come to. Hey! Sarah and I could be related haha.
@kimckawa
@kimckawa 6 ай бұрын
There's actually best seller book SALT by Mark Kurlansky that speaks this intermingling of Iberian ppl to Irish ppl. In the book he mentions Irish ppl in those early days were mainly nomadic tribes usually found in high altitude mountains. Many migrated to work in mountainous salt mines of Spain, a period when weight of salt was worth more than gold. If I recall correctly author mentioned jamon(ham) was introduced to Spain by Irish ppl.

14:22 oh wow! That bowl the "flower" was in is the infamous leaf shaped bowl every German household owns! Ok not EVERYONE, but most Germans at least know someone that does! We all have that thing as a big salad bowl and I also own the smaller ones in the size that Kyuho's parents own. It's the dessert dish size that you can buy complimentary to the big salad bowl. I bought one when moving out (my mum paid for it, I got to decide what type of bowls I wanted) and I chose it for the nostalgia. My mum always makes a big batch of noddle salad in that big salad bowl. (I've never met a person who didn't love my mum's noodle salad btw.) I now own other bowls as well, with a flat rim so you can put a lid on (like the lock lock type lids with the rubber seal straps that prevent spilling) for when I take stuff places, but at home if I make salad for myself, I always use my good old leaf bowl.

@@2hearts1seoul maybe you can ask her one day. Tell her hi from Germany for me! (Btw, if you look up something like German salad bowl, I'm sure you'll find pictures and even reels from people that moved to Germany talking about this. I never recognised it as such a German thing until I saw a Vietnamese living in Germany pointing out how all these German households seem to own one and then I realised how common they are here xD)

Having yummy food together and just being together is the best part about meeting up for holidays with the family. I feel so lucky to have grown up with little family drama/staying away from toxic family members, now thinking about how not everyone gets to experience that, I made myself feel sad 😅 Hopefully those people have found family that treats them well.

I recently met a man whose brother died a few years ago, and his mother last year. He was estranged from both of them and did not wish any condolences given for their loss. He did not elaborate on the situation but I got the feeling it was a painful past. But he is a friendly and kind man who focuses on his current family, wife and children he loves and devotes himself to. Meeting him made me also feel so grateful for a loving and supportive family to grow up in. My parents are both gone now, but even though my siblings and I are scattered across the country, we text, video chat and just generally stay in touch weekly, sometimes daily, and support each other however we can. Such a blessing!

That she has DNA relations in Louisiana is not far fetched if she has French-Canadian DNA, all the ethnically French people in Louisianne, Cajuns, which is short for Acadiens, were from Acadia, which is the old French name for Nova Scotia, where she was born and raised, I'm not surpised at all. As for Kyuho, it's a misconception, even within Korean culture, especially if you only go off of the jokbo since those books are purely patrilineal and never mention the matrilineal lines, that Koreans are 100% Korean, it's impossible, I mean they were occupied fairly recently by a country that back in the day had no problem with you know, um, "r@ping and pillaging", the more you talk to Koreans more deeply the more you realize they are mixed with other East Asian ethnicities, and facial features-wise, Koreans are closer to Mongolians than any other east asian ethnic group

Like Korea, Ireland was invaded multiple times throughout history (and also is to this day divided) so possibilities for variables to show up in your tests. Sarah, there are a lot of fair skinned blue eyed Spaniards. But also note on the Atlantic side many Spanish seafarers' ended up on Irelands shores as well as Spanish Armada (debate over this). This is where the "Black Irish" traits possibility originated from. Meaning dark features example my dads hair was black curly, olive skin tone with blue eyes compared to his dad and bro who had stereotypical Irish red hair to super fair . Ending up the word soup. Kuyho with Finish and you with Spaniard DNA, most likely Traders trading goods to dna (nod wink)

Happy Lunar New Year, Kyuho and Sarah! Thanks for inviting us to drool with envy over that amazing feast Kyuho’s mom prepared-(LOL)! So many delicious looking dishes! Seriously, I wanted to taste each and every one. I was also really impressed by the beautiful and detailed family record from Kyuho’s family line. My husband’s family immigrated to the US from Germany in the 1800’s, and a few years ago, his brother sent us a copy of the family tree that was at least six feet long, and going back to the early 1600’s. The Catholic Church in his family’s village of origin was very keen on keeping such records, apparently. We’ve not done DNA testing, but perhaps our son or daughter will one day.

Those Heritage tests are so interesting! I knew I was Irish & German, but also found out Scottish, English, Welsh, Norwegian, Swedish & Danish! Some of my Ancestors migrated to Iceland, so I guess Vikings.

I don’t think there’s such thing as 100% Korean. I’m no expert, but as a Chinese myself, I belief all Northeast Asians were once one ethnic group of people. They probably all spoke the same language with different dialects, and I think that’s why Korean and Japanese languages are originated from Chinese language, and Korean language still uses a lot of Hanja vocabularies. I’m currently learning Korean and what makes me interested in it is because of the similarities to my mother tongue, and it definitely has benefitted me a lot when it comes to learning vocabularies. Even when you guys mentioned about “jokbo”, that’s actually a Chinese thing and that’s Hanja btw. A lot of Korean heritage is actually originated from Chinese heritage too. If I’m not mistaken, Koreans are actually Manchurian moved south many years ago and became the now North and South Korea.

You're assuming too much and speaking from Sino-centric view/misinformation. Culture/language is one thing genetics is another. Today's Korean language system is mostly derived from Turkic origin. Yes true prior to hangeul adoption, Koreans used Chinese reading/writing system. This doesn't mean Koreans were speaking Chinese. Just cuz Sinaporeans speak English do not make them related to Anglo-Saxons. So in your world is there such as 100% Chinese?
@babygoo89

@@kimckawa Maybe i am assuming too much and that's why i said i'm no expert. I do agree that culture/language is different to genetics. What i was saying above is my own perception and how I find a lot of Korean culture and language are interesting because it shares a lot of similarities with Chinese culture and language. Maybe thousand years ago, that language wasn't even called "Chinese", it's just a language that people communicated with each other. I never said there is such thing as 100% Chinese either, so please do not assume that is my thinking. I don't know who is thinking or assuming too much here, but please don't twist what i said based on your own perception. And i am not asking people to agree with me. No need to be sarcastic here.

@@babygoo89 Well stop spreading Chinese ethnocentric misinformation while trying to discredit/erase Korean distinct culture. Now that Korean culture have gained currency around the world, so many jealous/envious Chinese netizens trying to take credit by claiming Korean culture/language is just "rebranded" Chinese culture. Btw before Manuchuria was invaded/conquered by China, it was part of Korean sphere ruled by Korean dynastic families. So no Koreans didnt migrated from Manuchuria but its Chinese came to Manuchuria

@@babygoo89 Hmm.. i know that you meant well, but... Korean (Japanese) language is actually very different from Chinese and they are not related at all... Korean (and Japanese) is considered a language isolate, which means it is a language that has no demonstrable genetic relationship with another language. They seem similar because the Koreans (and Japanese) used Chinese characters for their writing system and adopted a lot of Chinese words into their language in the past, which is not surprising since Korea (and Japan and Vietnam) belong to Sinosphere culturally. I think that you might have confused (or didn't make the distinction) about the fact that language and writing system are not the same. I think that there are like 7000 languages but only about 300 writing systems.

Thank you for amazing video, makes me really want to learn more of traditional Korean food and do it at home. For now Im just good at Kimchi Jjigae

Hi Sarah, if you have Iberian ancestors could they be from the Spanish armada that ended up in the west of Ireland? Many Irish there have that in common. A fact that should be checked with the Irish themselves, but I remember former colleagues in Ireland talking about it 🤔👍

Gosh watching the part of Kyuho making jeon reminds me of my mom and I making jeon at home too. It really isn't simple as a lot of prep work goes into the process, before you actually cook it too. It's never the case where you make one type of jeon as well. It's bad to say this but relieving to see Kyuho have back pain too while making the jeon 🤣I thought I was so out of shape (I definitely am!) and was the main reason why I always had back pain while making jeon too
