As a fellow DCI 3rd trumpet player, i model my exact sound off of Everett. He has the best sound ever and has completely changed the 3rd trumpet world.

I like watching headcams from BD 2017. I’m biased because a good friend of mine at the time, Spencer marched mello that year. Unfortunately, he passed away a couple months ago, but one of the awesome things about being in performing arts if any kind is that you can listen to music or watch shows and their contributions will be there forever. I love the channel! Thanks for sharing your perspective from that show and your perspective on the activity.

Got you beat, dude...i was a 4TH soprano in 84! In 07 when I was traveling to Concord for P West and a run by the BD/SCV alum brass ensemble (and I am STILL amazed Gibbs said yes to the idea when I proposed it to him), I drove up with one of the lead baris I'd marched with. Naturally, as soon as we started out, he put on the 84 show and we started singing our parts. Now a 4th sops job is to provide musical support where needed....I doubled Upper Leads a n octave down, the alto stuff, n contra that I recall...but it wasn't until THAT DAY that I found out how much lead bari part I played! I think 30% of my book was lead bari!

A lot of people don't know this but the Blue Devils 3rd trumpet section are actually all insanely good lead players, we just get nerfed to the 3rd section because it would be too unbelievable if we actually played lead. We get put on 3rd just because if we were on lead we'd set expectations way to high for the other trumpet players in DCI.

Loving the content, as always! Hopefully we'll catch you at semis or finals in a few days. While I love the in-depth review on what is typically the top 4-5 corps and their shows, I'd love to see thoughts on what you felt were iconic moments across the top 12 - both those that really showcased the best of each corps, and maybe those that would've held them back a bit (as an extension of the judging content) - whether it's repertoire or performance/execution.

It’s these that made me finalize what I wanted to do with my future Also I’d be cool to see more headcam reactions from other corps and other members and especially cool if you could get the players in to commentate.

Even though I’m not the biggest fan of what some of BD does in their shows, I most definitely was in a bigger hater phase in my HS days for BD, for the sport of it all, right? I’m rooting for some of my other favorites to beat them etc etc. but it wasn’t even 2017, but 2018 at the movie theater DCI prelims showing where they played the previous champion’s show at the end of the night, they put on Metamorph and pretty much for the ballad to the end, the show just never stopped hitting high after high with their musical moments, trumpet feature, trombones going crazy, the “diamonds in the sky” moment with the reprise of the ballad was definitely a very powerful ending of a show that was a celebration of your corps and your history. I’m definitely a fan of self-referential, “this is who we are” kinds of shows when there’s passion and emotive qualities behind it all and I think that’s really where the show excelled. My friend asked me too, “did you think SCV should’ve won last year?” That year being 2017 of course, I was rooting for them hard to win, but I just said pretty emphatically, “No” I had to give BD props because they gave me a show of theirs that I can say I’m all in on and on board with, still a great show to look back to!

I have a question for you guys. Do you think drum corps is pedagogically beneficial for brass players? Because as someone who marched lead for a top 3 corps long before you guys did and taught a lot of high school marching band - I think it’s terrible. Just to give you an idea of where I’m coming from, I have a doctoral level education from one of the best music schools in the world and have extensive orchestral experience (on modern and baroque instruments). I am not an amateur.
@funlinerproductions707111 ай бұрын
Definitely think it’s not the best thing for people who are trying to be professional brass players. Alan would have a lot more to say about it!
@zak204311 ай бұрын
@@funlinerproductions7071 right. That’s how I feel. I know plenty of successful orchestral players who marched, but often that’s with a lot of supplemental practice and lessons to counteract all the pedagogical issues that are inherent to marching. I personally think we waste too much time and energy and money on marching band here in US music education programs. I think those resources would be much better spent on developing more and better orchestral programs. Where I come from, there is only one orchestra program in the entire district - and that one isn’t very good at all.
@funlinerproductions707111 ай бұрын
While I agree with the first half of that, I disagree about the sentiment that there’s too much resources spent on marching band. Marching band is an incredibly life-enriching activity that teaches you a lot about teamwork and discipline. Not everyone strives to be a professional classical musician. I can agree that there probably should be more funding to orchestral music programs but targeting marching band as the problem is not something I would agree with.

I will argue that bluecoats 2017 is more impactful and well put together then Blue Devils 2017. Bluecoats had a more cohesive idea that flowed smoothly. Blue Devils had so much happening on the field that year that it was hard to understand what was happening. It was like it was a show about us but very vague I've seen ideas from past years but really wasn't fleshed-out. The music in bluecoats 2017 is still hummable

12:29 my high schools show in 2021 was a super technical(at least for our bands standard) thing and we did horribly, last year it was more about the playing than visual effects so all the visual stuff was super easy and we did really good, and this year it’s a very visual heavy show with really easy marching and meh difficulty music and we sound ok so I do think that there is a good bit of truth to this
