First, yes, Ren has his own way of coming at things - notice its illest of OUR time - not ALL time - he recognizes what came before him and is not disrespecting those by saying he is better than them - respect for that! Second, I have said it before and I will say it again, Ren may be doing all these different styles of music with rap being his primary comfort zone, but he is the most punk rock artist in the business right now! He represents the heart of punk rock - anti-system and pushing back against the machine while shaking the cage the whole time. Keep rocking! 🤘🤘🤘

I've had this song on repeat lately, Ren is unbelievably underrated and I'm so excited to watch this!

His lyrical use of double entendres is amazing, "I'm ready I'm heavy, I’m Mercury, I am Freddy,..." Mercury being a HEAVY metal, Freddy Mercury....😵‍💫 C'MON! Even the title is a double entendre - "Illest of our Time". He's firing warning shots in this one and making sure everyone takes notice. Nice to see him showing some attitude and confidence, being a little braggadocious. I Love it. He did a live stream right after the video dropped (on Twitch), and to see his genuine, emotional reaction to how many reaction channels had already posted videos within an hour of the songs release, was truly heartwarming. He shows his soul. This young man deserves every bit of love , support, and success he's finally getting. I couldn't be happier for him, especially for someone so talented, so driven, and without question, someone who has been forged through fire. Love this kid! Fan for life.

Great reaction guys, love your channel. Illest is a double entendre. He is being tongue and cheek. He is literally still battling his illness trying to find answers to get 100% better instead of just 50-75%. He is welcoming you into his Ill mind. He wants to flex and be the best, but he may never be 100%. At the end he says he may never find the answers but until then he guesses he is the illest of our time. I gathered this opinion from information I have learned about him and things he has stated himself. Love Ren so much, keep those Ren reactions coming. He has a deep catalogue of music. Including some with the band he was in called The Big Push, Ren busking on the streets with Sam Tompkins (also a phenomenal singer) they are all amazing, you should also check them out as well. Ren will continue to surprise you.

Although there's a lot of flexing, its so much more than a 'flex rap'. He explained it a bit on a community post. At the beginning and end he's inviting you to tour his mind and he's brutally honest about what you might find in there. Its much more about being ill in terms of physical/mental illness rather than 'ill' in terms of greatness. Although of course the ambiguity is deliberate.

I think Hi Ren was an introduction to Ren for many people. The first song I heard from him (without knowing who he was) was Money Game 2. Another great reaction guys. It's hard to believe they filmed this whole video in one night in an abandoned warehouse full of homeless people. They even had stuff stolen during the filming.

Here's some news I just learned... Ren actually created a soundtrack for an award winning indie film! The film is called 'unrest' and the song is called 'Patience'. It is one of his earlier tracks from the early days of his misdiagnosis. It is a must listen. Well worth a reaction. It is more of a song than what we are used to from Ren.

Another impressive track! I think the "Living with Depression is a Blessing in Disguise" comment is only meant to reflect his thoughts about his own journey with mental illness, not a general statement on depression. Ren is amazing!

Great reaction! As a fan, it is funny to see Ren flexing, because when he's talking, he comes across as a very humble, down to earth guy. 'Humble Flexing' should sound like an oxymoron but it's a thing with him.

After Ren drops Sick Boi (his hip-hop album coming out in Sept) his next album is going to be mostly guitar and singing. He already has most of the songs written. I look forward to your reactions to some of that stuff. He does have a huge back catalog that features more singing and guitar.

One of the things that gets overlooked in this song is the beat. The drums are on fire. The way they hit, the tone. His delivery is just slightly ahead of the beat and it really works.

I highly reccomend "how to be me" by ren, it is another emotional song together with chinchilla. also more about that russian matrushka doll analogy, you will rarely find 2 songs of ren that sound the same, unless they are supposed to (like for example the songs "jenny's tale", "Screetch's tale" and "Violet's Tale" because they all form one story that fits together) Also if you want another REALLY experimental one, I'd reccomend "children of the moon" an older one but a great one

I saw the Hi Ren video a few days ago and didn't click it at first, but then I saw how many people reacted to it so I knew it's a masterpiece lyrically or musically and it was both in it's own way and I just had to look into his other work and holy shit, he's so smart and talented. I have to say, the line "sucking on my massive..." I'm not a fan of but I also had to laugh when he was saying this and now I have it on my phone listening to it a lot (the song, not just the line, obviously). His music sounds so different from what I'm used to and I'm extremely musically driven and heard so much in my life, but nothing like that. But also "Hi Ren" is a song I can trongly relate to, even without having psychosis but other mental illnesses I'm struggling with, daily thoughts that change from hopeful, positive and loving to the most awful thoughts full of self-hatred, hopelessness, anger and depression, switching sometimes multiple times in an hour alone. He really is a gift to the world and I'm glad he gets the attention and appreciation he deserves. You can tell in his Streams and Videos that he's super down to earth and thankful for the support he gets. I hope he will put out more music he enjoys making and surprise and please us with many more songs

I think it's more of a cultural thing tbh. Rapping is in the US closely associated with hiphop/rap and not much else, it's quite confined and centralised in a way from my perception. While in the UK due to the Jamaican influence of toasting/soundsystems/mc culture rapping/spitting has been an integral part of Jungle/Drum 'n Bass/Garage/Grime/Dubstep since the 90's. Parties/raves of those genres always had MC's on the line-up where they would be rapping on fast breaks / beats / electronic music. I see some US reactors for example finding the beats of Genesis and Losing It - Fisher Rap retake "weird" in combo with rapping, while for UK/European standards this has been an absolutely "normal" style since way back in the 90's. Ren grew up in that culture, he has told before that his first foray into production was when he fell in love with drum 'n bass actually and I for one can defo hear some dnb mc's influence in his rapping. So I personally don't think you'd say Ren is a rapper in terms of how the US views rappers, rapping is just one of his musical skills and part of his repertoire

The Freddy Mercury bar is the best one for me bc he says, "ready, I'm heavy, Mercury, I am Freddy." So, heavy bc he's hitting hard. But Mercury, the element, is also a heavy metal. It's also extremely toxic and will make you ill. Also. Mercury is the god of translators and interpreters. He also ruled over wealth and thievery, which goes back to the Robin Hood scheme, then Freddy is a callback to the Freddy Krueger line at the beginning, as well as the obvious Freddy Mercury reference. Maybe I'm reading into it too much, but with Ren, I doubt it. 😅 I almost forgot, that it's also a callback to the alchemist line, bc Mercury was one of the most important materials to alchemists.

Autoimmune illnesses which lead to bouts of depression will certainly give you an elevated clarity of thought and help you gain a philosophical perspective, kinda like a super power if you’re an artist - especially one as talented and blessed with the intellect of Ren.

You should look into some of the live videos of Ren with his busking band “The Big Push”. They do a great cover of “I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop”, that will show how he can do it all. They also cover Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs”, which is really good too.
