We React | We Push Back Against "Somalis Are Not Black"!

At Speaker's Corner in London, a controversial topic was raised where African youth from the British capital discussed their roots.
Some Somali youngsters refused to accept they are Black, stating their culture, language and heritage proves they are not.
But is this just another example of people falling for colonial stereotyping? Are they trying to distance themselves from their Africanness because of dominant negative Black narratives? Is this why the Somalis in this clip refuse to accept their own identity and colour?
Whether Somali, Moroccan or Nigerian, the necessity of being unified and proud of our origins is a must, and while we may not be identically homogenous and have difference in ethnicity and religion, our Africanness or Blackness must not be denied. That is weakness rather than strength.

You don't comprehend that "black" is used interchangeably to reference AfRAkan, Negro or Bantu people with melanin-DOMINANT DNA distinguishable by our coily hair, eyes and skin. Our DNA materialized out of triple blackness that is ETERNAL NATURE. We are a carbon representative of nature in physical form. Carbon is _black._ This is not rocket science.

Somalis REJECT western colonial color system because they know their lineage and language which is intact to this day. Most Africans who attack Somalis are delusional hypocrites who have adopted their oppressors colonial color system and speak his language as their official language. Whether it’s English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, etc. Somalis are the ONLY people in the continent who named their country, people, language, sea, etc after their tribe which is Somali. However, you never find those who attack Somalis in the continent saying or doing the same thing.

You are African and Somali and you are "black" in the viual descriptor sense, but that is it. There is NO such thing as a black identity. To say you are black is to say you are a black American. A black American and someone from the DRC have NOTHING in common. They don't speak the same language, have completely different cultures and have different views on life. To put yourselves in some kind of skin color based club based on nothing but skin color is doing the exact same thing you people cry the racist people of the past did to you when they stripped African individuals of their identity. This is what Africa needs. Educated young individuals who work together across different lines. Men who are not quick to talk and spread misinformation. Our people perish due to lack of knowledge. The way these men put the debate is well structured. Today we carry the identity of African. I am African before my country name. Let us move on to create the African identity which is a basket of people inside the continent and diaspora. I can for the most tell about a handful of African ethnicity where I live. We are very diverse people inside one continent so there is a need for us to work very hard to have a similar philosophical thinking.

I come from a sprouting agricultural community south west of Congo neighboursing Angola. We can change the name but the continent will still be who I am. @@bluebell3720 almost in every instance where there had been a coexistence among disparate groups for centuries and in some cases thousands of years, colonial forces went to work. Divisions were exacerbated and accentuated to create deeper, more violent divisions and chaos. Groups were purposely favored over other groups and pitted against each other. Then the colonial powers feigned the roles of peacemakers to squash the divisions that they instigated. The chaos was their creation and their solution was permanent colonial presence and dependence. Meanwhile cooperative leaders were paid off lavishly so the coffers of natural resources could be looted and non cooperative leaders were overtly assassinated, or their planes fell from the sky, or they died of sudden infant death syndrome or they were couped out of existence by constant foreign financed insurgencies. This method of divide and conquer, colonialism and rule for rapacious greed has continued to this day. Leaders even those elected are propped up repeatedly by external forces that pay them to open the gates to the castle. This is why the current wave of military coups in BF, Mali and Niger offer promising hope that finally since the last 400 years things might be changing for the better. Nevertheless, this is only a transitional period and where we turn up has yet to be determined.

Somalians are Africans. Period. It doesn't matter if they may have encountered the cultural proximity and, of course, the Islamic ties. That's only religious; I'm not somalian but i can argue that the original language isn't Arabic! I learned that Somalians are even some of the oldest people in part of east Africa. I would be attempted to believe that because "Somali" people are also, in part, in Kenya. Iam not talking about "Somalians" which refer to the nationality! A tribe or, otherwise,an ethny is enough evidence to show where its people originated; it doesn't matter if they wandered in the middle east, or even intermarried; they may be speaking Arabic. So what? Hold on! I speak fluent French, English, and Lingala, Swahili ,Kinyarwanda. Does it make French, or British or else? I'm catholic but some in my family are Muslims. You get what I'm saying? So, do not fall in a category of division. That happened before! Well, in Africa we have a problem of identity just because those things aren't thought in schools, as they should! What do they say, "if you don't know your past..." I let everyone to complete the sentence! Now, have a great day!

Black was a collar the Portuguese the European came up to call people like us with brown skin. I was wondering why we, as people of brown skin, have to accept the collar others give us. We have our own identity. Just because the Europeans Calle us black, that doesn't mean we have or need to accept that. Just like they called the native Americans redskins, or the Chinese, yellow people. They even named the continent of afrika and never bother to ask how our people called the continent. By accepting their description of us, we are destroying our own history and cultural identity. We should not accept people calling us black. It's not what or who we are.

Somalis and Bantus are both ancient Africans and very close genetically. Somalis are of the E3b1 haplogroup, while Bantus are of the E3a haplogroup. E haplogroups are ancient haplogroups that are exclusively African. Now compare the Somali (E3b1) to Arab haplogroups (J haplogroup). Present-day Arabs are a much younger race made up of genetics that migrated into the region later. The only thing that connects Somalis to Arabs is Islam, but they are racially African. Original African.

Very intelligent young men. The only area I disagree with them or more like differ with their opinions is that they are young. Nothing they have talked about here in regards to self-identification is new. I am almost 66 years old and I can tell you from my own life experience as a black American that this subject is not new. Not even new to other peoples of the world. There are many ethnicities in Asia, Europe, Africa, and the so-called Eastern people. Only in recent decades have whites adopted lighter-skinned Israelis, Scottis, and others. Interesting to me is as I travel the world, I can see who white European colonists put in power wherever they occupied other peoples. They are always lighter-skinned. This really affected me when I moved to the Philippines and it is so clear that wherever you go there, lighter-skinned Filipinos run whatever office space. The darker-skinned Filipinos are more than often the "blue collar" workers. They are the service sector. When it comes to my larger black family (wherever they may be in the world) I am encouraged more so now than at any other time in my life because of the internet. It will become very clear to a lot of people that as you call them "the enemy" if you don't look like them. If your skin is not pink like theirs and you don't have European ancestry, you are black. Doesn't matter if you are Asian, Middle Eastern, or any other people. If you are not of European ancestry, you are not white, which means you are ultimately black in their eyes. It is also very encouraging to see and hear black African nations speaking up and out about France and others stealing from the people of Africa. Just be aware that the enemy will look for other ways if they can't take by force what they see as "theirs". At present, they will try to get other black nations to do their dirty work for them. They will attempt to have us fight against one another. This is what they do everywhere we are. More than anything else, they lie. Believe nothing they say. They lie about everything. Even about themselves to themselves.

Great conversation by these brothers and very constructive. I just want to add that as an African American we get this same treatment from some of our brothers and sisters from countries in Africa. I’ve had numerous encounters with plenty of Kenyans and Nigerians who go out of their way to distinguish themselves from Black people in America. They will say “we are not Black, or you are not African.” It’s very divisive and definitely rooted in the colonial mindset. It’s become very problematic out here and that’s why today you see many African Americans distancing themselves from our brothers and sisters from the continent that come over here. I grew up in a very Pan Africanist environment and generally speaking Black people in the US have always been African centered in our identity but something has happened in the last couple of decades where that has shifted.

The enlighten ones reject that ideology and see everyone as human. Besides, they have been fighting against colonization for hundreds of years. So they have no positive association with Europe or their skin colour.

Sure, most people are average in general anyway, but Western countries in general have higher standard of living, economically productive industries, and technologically advanced transportation and communication infrastructures. Africans should learn from the West on how to build and maintain advanced modern countries instead of crying about being bullied because of their race.

Look at any Somali person man or woman and think of a race. That is the race Somalis are. Period. As a Somali I find it stupid that we even have to discuss ''are Somalis black''? when we clearly can't be anything but black. Our skin is perfectly dark brown, our hair is afro and we speak Somali. SO YES, we are unapologetically black Africans and we are an Indigenous tribe in The Horn of Africa. Peace:)🤲🏾👴🏾👵🏾 🌍

A large swath of Somalis quite literally claim not to be black. Young, middle aged, and old. And I'm fine with that. As an indigenous black African, I'm not begging for allies. They can and should be whatever they wish to be,.

@@MrSivram28 As a Somali person, this is hilarious. The people who think that they are better certainly are not doing it from the context of European or whatever nonsense. Somali people are the superior everything to them. Everyone else is beneath them. This is existed for THOUSANDS of years while before Europeans even had a civilization that could come to Africa. It’s almost like as if people have history is outside of subjugation by Europeans. You have to realize that they saw them as less developed (spirituality and civilization wise). It’s the same thing for Middle Eastern people. In their mind, Somalia is just having temporary bad luck and soon it will be great again. But everyone else is just below Somali people. They look down on European people in the same way including their features. They certainly don’t want to be next to them or adjacent to anything. Their image of optimal is themselves. They don’t want their children to look anything but Somali. They don’t want them to marry those people to “ruin” that. You guys have no idea how these people ACTUALLY think. Just because some people want to worship their colonizers doesn’t mean these people think the same way. They live in a Somali centric world which is easy in a homogeneous country.

It's really unjust to make problems out of topics that have never shown themselves as a problem. I am happy that Brother Zakari Deeq shared with us the obvious historical achievements made by prior generations of Somalis; it shows us what they stood for over other differences. Instead of adding more segregation in Africa, let us bridge the empty gaps that try to split us; once we start viewing our fellow neighboring countries as part of each other's community, that's where we as Africans start heading, not the right way, but the proactive way - As brother Zakari said, we are intelligent so should the decisions we make be social intelligent - because contributions to one another strengthen our bond, you know, like a community. Thank you, Erick, Ahmed, and Zakari for tackling this topic head-on, good job guys.
