We remember the trade that could have changed the course of basketball history as we know it. What If Chris Webber stayed in Orlando? What If Penny got to play in the high powered Golden State offense?

Then Penny became almost a GOAT if it wasnt for the injuries but still that team became super good

What a historical moment. I couldn't hear a word they said because the music was so damn loud!

But yeah, it was definitely historic. I had just graduated from high school a couple of weeks prior to this draft.

Orlando made a brilliant move! That team was special, sad they couldn't keep Shaq happy.

Shaq wanted to amongst the stars in Los Angeles. There wasn’t anything the Magic could do.

Yes indeed…but Shaq had a young mind & was influenced by his agent to move to LA for more opportunities outside of basketball…making movies & music…bold move but @the end worked out w/Kobe for his career!

Yes I'm aware, but it was Shaq who facilitated this in the first place.

A trade any GM would likely make. Shaq would NEVER play alongside a 4 like CWebb, just a personality thing.

Webber and Don Nelson had a falling out. Yes, too bad. The Warriors were a team that could have competed for a title with the talent they had.

Wish Shaq had stayed in Orlando, but he did what was best for him. The league was at it's height during this era to me. Not shunning the Magic-Bird era though.

Hmmm, you might be right. The draft classes in the 90’s were the best. The infusion of talent during that decade catapulted the NBA as the premier professional sports league in the world.

But would he have continued his success without Shaq? I wasn’t familiar with nba back then, but was the Orlando magic roster still stacked when Shaq left?

Don Nelson doesn’t get enough credit. He was behind drafting Dirk for the Mavs and Steph for the Warriors. It’s a shame he and Webber couldn’t compromise or come to an agreement on his position. It’s weird to trade all those picks (and Hardaway), when you take a guy and force him to play a position he wasn’t comfortable with. Golden State paid severely for this. Not only did they lose Webber to a trade after just one season, they blew up the entire roster, and still lost Nelson as a coach. It took another decade+ before they were relevant again (Ironically Nelson coming back)… and to add to the craziness, Webber ended his career (with Nelson) at Golden State. Frustrating they couldn’t make it work. They won 50 games with Webber in ‘93 - a 16 game win improvement from the previous season. Warriors were loaded. And then dismantled.

30+ years later and the NBA still hasn’t figured out how to properly do the hat on the player that is going or has been traded. Sometimes - I understand it’s still in the works… like this trade. But when a trade has been made, they shouldn’t have that player wearing the hat of the team that traded him. It happens 10+ times every year and it’s awkward.

I would be so mad if i got drafted and traded on draft night. Rather just play the whole way through rather then a year hear dealing with new coaches new teams.

Penny apparently had the greatest pre draft workout of all time. After seeing that, Orlando just had to draft him. Although two mobile bigs in Cwebb and Shaq couldve been an epic pairing, never seen before, that would dominate for years to come Penny was crushed by injuries but you always wanna draft a guard + big combo instead of 2 bigs. So that was it. Plus his pre draft Magic.* *Kobe in 1996 really crushed his pre workouts **Darko in 2004 may have been among these 2, when Joe Dumars was watching his workout he couldnt believe what he was seeing. Such a skilled big rarely came to the league.... unfortunately he was a fool and his basic skills were in a 18-year old spoiled brat not ready for the real world. Cant blame him though, that is tough for any player to go through

Forget webber on the magic they were fine without him , but he should have stayed on g state they had a 50 win season in Webbers a Rookie season ! Playing without Tim hardaway most of the year , than they randomly trade him to the Wizards ? Wth made no sense

DeeNice681 webber did become a better shooter later on but they'd both want the ball because shaq wants to score in the post and paint and be dominant but webber would want to make plays on offense and setup his team mates but we may never know

Shaq's ego and selfishness would have collided with Chris Webber that same as it did with Penny and Kobe. Shaq actually encouraged Orlando to trade for Penny in the Draft, because he knew that Penny passed the ball more and that ensure him more easy points. Shaq backstabbed Chris Webber by going to the Orlando Magic GM and requesting the trade, which shows the young Shaq's selfishness and how he was very difficult to play with during that time.
@owainkanaway83455 жыл бұрын
Also proof that management should never listen to their players when acquiring talent. Shaq said that if Orlando didn't get Penny that he was going to leave after his contract was over. Ended up leaving anyway. I think Penny would have been better off in GS, because GS had the better coach and the better organization.
@AC-nx7qr4 жыл бұрын
Owain Kanaway trust me, the warriors ain’t a better organization during that time. First of all, they were dumb enough to add 3 future first round picks in the trade (I think 2 future first rounders are already enough). Secondly, they traded away Webber after his rookie season.
