Due to the material shortage after WWII many ships were rebuilt at that time. It's very difficult to get informations because sometimes wooden boats got a new steel hull and we have hints that this was done in our case, ships were shortened or made longer and sometimes they made one ship out of two... But we do our best to find out as much as possible! One thing we know is that she was converted into a sailing ship called RAN in 1977.

Hi Barbara and Daniel, Nice to learn more about the history of Flying Coney and how remarkable the learn that rhe designer was from Austria as well. Not a lot of people know that in the past Austria was a sailing nation and even had their own war ships. The harbor of Triest in Italy was previously an Austrian harbor and some older people in the city still speak German in the way the Austrians do with a dialect what sounds close to the dialect spoken in Gratz. Together with my wife WIlleke we wish you lots of success with the refit of Flying Coneyj. Best regards

Now it's not even possible to register Flying Coney in Austria because she exceeds the 24 meters LOA. The maritime world would not be the same without Austrian inventors and engineers. Josef Ressel designed the first working ship's propeller and Fritz Maier influenced the hull shape of most vessels built from 1930-1980. His son Erich is responsible for the shape of the KFK and the second ship in the video is a good example of a post war trawler built to these lines. Also the Tres Hombres is a KFK if you know that sailing ship... However, Flying Coneys hull shape is even a bit older. Speaking about design an early example of a fishing vessel built to traditional lines but already built with an engine. But since the early diesels and semi diesels were not all that strong and reliable most skippers still wanted to have a sailing rig just in case. Another example of an hybrid in between a sailing ship and a motor ships are the famous Hajkutters built in Denmark. (Sorry for nerding out again 😉)

@@FlyingConey What very kind of you to respond to my comment in such a way. Yes I’m aware of Austrian inventions in all kind of areas. A Haikutter (Gaffelketsch) was built already before WW1 . These vessels were built as fishing boats and smaller as your boat with only a 10 hp engine and with splendid sailing rigs strong enough to drag nets full of fish that were hoisted on board with ropes and pulleys by hand

The hull construction of full displacement steel hulls like Flying Coney and her younger sisters, is very interesting. The hull plating is applied in somewhat narrow planks to allow shaping of the curves. Unlike modern vessels that have large flat sections of steel to minimize the need to cut and shape the plate. The modern construction sacrifices a lot of efficiency and aesthetics.

In common with Tally Ho, Sailing Coney is benefiting from attractive people with a vision and a penchant for hard work, ready understanding and old fashioned courage. Once the hull "anomalies" are closed there remains lots of interesting work lowering the unsuitable stern superstructure, as well as the deck house; perhaps you have already drawn plans of these areas and how they will restore the sailing appearance of Coney. A great video.

Suggestion - In this sequence; 1) vigorously wire brush the rusted nuts, bolt heads and any exposed threads, 2) Apply lots of heat to the nuts/bolts with with a handheld propane torch. 3) Immediately soak down the nuts and bolts liberally with your favorite penetrating oil. Repeat the soaking several times if necessary. Barbara has the patience to do this well.

I agree I love watching all the boat restoration shows I'm looking all the time for a project. I'm looking at 45 to 60 odd feet in length I'm looking for a steel hull as have worked on wood and steel and fibreglass boats . Wood you feel damp all the time . Fibreglass vibrates and bounces around in the sea moor to light .steel seems to Handel much better in rough and is easier to repair just cut n weld .

That’s something people don’t realise. The advantage of having a hole in the hull is that it is great for drainage.😂😂😂😂 It’s interesting that in the time of sailing it was important to have a little drag as possible but of course as soon as diesel engines come along that is less of a concern and I suppose that’s why the 1980s boat is a lot more angular. Flying Coney is the nicest of all three boats! Your current DAF is clearly keel cooled. Was strainer from an older engine? if so, what was the engine? Or was it from something else? Great Video!😀
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey Жыл бұрын
Hi Canice, the strainer was for a strong deck and net wash pump. The valve underneath it was very very old. The keel cooling was introduced together with the DAF, before that she had an De Industry 4 cyl. engine one of those large ones you start by air. Cooled with an heat exchanger and I believe the discharge valve above the waterline is still in place. I just looked it up on an old photo if there's water coming out on the side somewhere and it is. The Kort Nozzle aka Ducted Prop is mostly beneficial at low speeds. So most tugs and trawlers have them. Above 10 knots the additional drag eats up the benefit of the higher efficiency. We believe that Flying Coney was designed as a logger, so the nets were floating in front of the slowly backwards drifting vessel. No heavy towing involved. But long journeys were an evident hull was important.

Hey guys I’m not sure about your Intel, but we built and serviced a lot of mine sweepers here in Rhode Island. Before my time but I’ve worked with a lot of guys who worked on them. Mine sweepers have no ferrous metals on board. That includes the engine and all tools. The reason for this is that mines are magnetically triggered. So you might have to dig deeper into that claim. Keep up the good work!
@FlyingConey

Flying Coney was definitely not built as a mine sweeper. However, the Kriegsmarine used KFK and also herring loggers as VP- Boats, Outpost Boats, Flakships and especially after the war the boats also were used for minesweeping. It's possible that our boat had wooden planks, was longer in length and was destroyed doing that job and was later rebuilt "in iron". I agree with you that there are probably better warships but they did use what they had during that time.

This is not a criticism as you’re doing really good work, and you couldn’t put more heart and soul into a Job if you tried I have done a lot of dirty jobs in the past - dust masks ear defenders, boiler suits safety, boots and all the rest in confined spaces, I had used ducted fans to help keep down the dust saturation in the atmosphere. You do not seem to have gone down. this route Just a thought, I can’t wait to see your next episodes

It be awesome see you guys in a race with tally ho , are you going to grind the bow to make it more sharper, to cut through the water? Could you go with a small prop ?
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey Жыл бұрын
I think our prop is reasonable. A new one would cost about 25-30 000€ and a feathering one more than twice as much. We probably will alter the shape of the bow slightly above the waterline. But below it it's very sharp and has a lot of lateral area, so it's good for sailing!

[pl] Czy myśleliście o instalacji steru strumieniowego na dziobie statku? Dziś to w zasadzie standard i bardzo ułatwia manewry w porcie.

Yes but at the moment we have bigger concerns and have to set priorities. A good bow thruster is more than 10k.

Niech Wam Posejdon/Neptun sprzyja! Pozdrawiam!

@@FlyingConey but as far as sailing channels go that do a bit of history Smithy's boatshed and captain q are the only ones I think of that aren't like you working on a old or historical boat

I don't know if you are already aware of sharrow marine props, if not go take a look
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey Жыл бұрын
I did and it's a very interesting concept. But unfortunately not suitable for our high torque set up. A 47" (1.2 meter) diameter four bladed prop isn't small and costs about 30 000€. One with adjustable blades for sailing would be amazing but costs more than 100k. SV Seeker built one himself but still struggles a bit to get it running.

I'm watching tally ho and that's not really a refit project so much as a complete from the keel up rebuild that is a brand new ship using the lid tally ho as a model but he's doing a great job of it

Just turn on captions, go to settings directly under the video, there you have the point "subtitles / CC" and there you can pick "auto translate" to Portuguese. Have fun watching the videos 😉

History is pretty much the sole reason fools like yourselves take on these seemingly endless and non cost effective tasks. 'Ship Happens' is another 'project' where the first video comments section was full of people telling them to run away but they are also doing good work and making steady progress. History is important so more of it please. See also 'Brupeg' a sunken trawler.

You have a great project 😉 I can only roughly imagine how much work a wooden boat in that condition is. But Sarinda is a Wonderfull Ship and with your love you'll bring her back to live. Speaking about work I do think you have the "biggest boat project" on KZfaq 😉
