Alexander Abian was a mathematics professor at Iowa State University who had some radical ideas on climate change. One of them being that blowing up the moon would fix all of our meteorological problems. He absolutely meant it, too.

Well if that's all we're after, we actually don't need to blow up the moon, we just need to alter its orbit so that it never appears full when viewed from the earth, which would be possible if we have it revolve in a north-south direction instead of an east-west one.

This man is honestly fascinating. A great teacher, an accomplished mathematician, a very smart man by every measure... and yet, he just fucking hated the way the solar system looks, the way one might hate how the furniture in their house is arranged. Except that instead of throwing out that ratty old couch and pushing that big fuck-off wardrobe somewhere else, my man wanted to delete the moon and shuffle the planets around. You gotta admire this guy's dedication to telling planetary science to go fuck itself, to telling physics itself that it built the solar system all wrong.

For those who are wondering: blowing up the moon would take the equivalent of a magnitude 16 earthquake. Tsar Bomba, the most powerful nuke ever created had the equivalent power of a magnitude 8 earthquake. Go figure. (btw, if you're not familiar with the Richter scale: it's logarithmic meaning that 16 is not just twice as strong as 8 but much, much, much stronger. Look at it this way: a magnitude 8 earthquake is devastating, but a magnitude 4 is barely noticeable, and magnitude 2 can only be measured using specialized equipment)

Not really equivalent since the man was obviously both intelligent and educated. I find a more apt reason is really intelligent/creative people are far more open to new ideas. Obviously this has its advantages but less talked about is the fact this also allows ideas into your thinking that aren't necessarily in line with objective systems and facts we've come up with, since that is a box and creative thinkers tend to think outside of that. @generalrubbish9513
@generalrubbish9513 2 жыл бұрын
Probably not a week, maybe more like a hundred years or so (which is still barely any time at all on a cosmic scale of course). Otherwise, that's just how plain old gravity works, as far as I'm aware. The reason why we even have a moon in the first place is currently thought to be due to another protoplanet slamming into the young Earth during its formative years and throwing up a lot of material from both planets into the newly merged planet's orbit. The stuff that didn't fall back to Earth or fly off into interplanetary space eventually lumped together under its own gravity and formed the Moon. Therefore, if we did somehow manage to blow the moon to pieces, I believe pretty much the same thing would happen again - some of the Moon's mass would fall down to Earth or fly off into deep space, but the rest would stay in orbit and eventually form the Moon again, though it would naturally be a bit smaller due to the amount of mass it lost.

Doesn't the moon also contribute to all the normal tides and whatnot? Like...wouldnt getting rid of the moon murder ocean life? Wouldn't the ocean come to a standstill? I believe there's a theory (maybe not a theory anymore I dunno) that the moon is the reason life formed on earth? It kept the oceans stirring and mixing and allowed life to finally grow and thrive? Or am I just remembering something wrong?
@Demonslayer20111

Well yes and no. Waves are mostly caused by wind. Wind is caused by presaure differentials. Pressure differentials (other wise known as "the weather") is caused by the sun heating the earths crust and ocean currents. Ocean currents are caused by differing levels of salinity. Differing levels of salinity are caused by rainwater through rivers and melting ice. Melting ice is seasonal caused by the earths tilt. The tilt is caused by gravity from the moon and other celestial bodies. So the moon causes waves I guess. You right I dunno im not a waveologist

completly destroying the moon and removing it's remaints (because gravity is still a thing and splitting a planetoid simple in pieces will only cause it to reform again, also the effect the moon has on the earth wouldn't change) would end all life on earth, as this would stop the tilting effect of the moon which creates the strong magnetic field of the earth resulting in the sun bathing us in radiation.

Huggbees: I still have my usenet subscription, though I'm not sure exactly why, and I long ago stopped installing Forté Agent. Thank you for briefly going down the usenet rabbit hole, reminding me of when DejaNews decimated usenet, and then sold it all to Google Groups, who destroyed it further. I had utterly and completely forgotten about that part of internet history. Unlike my old Compuserve account, which I thoroughly enjoyed and still regale. Even more interesting to early dialup was GEnie, though I never joined that service. As I recall, I couldn't afford it. Anyway, thanks for this content. This theory was all 'news' to me.

Someone once asked online if you could deorbit the moon using nukes. Quick Wolfram alpha calculation shows that no, all of our weapons don't contain enough energy to change moons orbital energy by one billionths of a percent. Shows how huge planets are, despite having more than enough energy to destroy earths biosphere, we're nowhere near moving celestial bodies around

It saddens me that mankind will never know the pivotal role our little moon played in the formation of our planet. To be forgotten and eternally tidal locked stuck orbiting this worthless ball of rock hurling through space it was fundamentally responsible for. Forever watching life thrive and extinguish in endless cycle. A grim reminder of it's solemn sacrifice.
