It's important to note the zx4r in North America is detuned to 56hp for emissions, in Europe it makes up to 79hp. This would make the performance a lot closer to the gsx8r. American zx4r can be modified to get the full potential.

Also a the 4 pot is actually making a lot of emissions just by being a 4 pot, so one of the thing they use to reduce the emissions is actually a restrictive exhaust. Most bike increase their hp by a lot with full exhaust kit, but moreso on this bike.

@@pitchforkpeasant6219 what getting our bikes now is noise regulation. epa emission rules are reely lax compared to euro. what was reely holding back early 70s cars was leaded gas. cant use a catlylitic converter with leaded gas. all they had was just goofy air injection and a whole bunch of ideas that didn't work. any emissions regulation hurt power a ton. onec leaded gas was out and they discovered cats and the oil crisis was over power came back. i dont know if you've seen smog but yea emissions regulations are necessary. but the goofy testing procedure they use for noise regulations is crazy.

@rightwingsafetysquad9872
@rightwingsafetysquad9872 2 ай бұрын
@cottleful On the contrary, the ZX-4R is perfect for near beginners. It's not so fast that they'll be more focused on not dying than learning. And it has plenty of capability to grow into. A personal anecdote: I started on a Ninja 500. After 2 months, I upgraded to a Daytona 675. I learned more in 2 hours on the Daytona than I did in 2 months on the Ninja. I was not nearly good enough to use all of Daytona's capability. But the bike was good enough to allow me to more comfortably explore what I was capable of. I would never buy a new Ninja 400 unless you really like that class and want to stay there. If it's for learning, plenty of other people have already done that, just buy their used bike. True beginners should start on something cheap and used so not as much is lost when they inevitably drop it. After a very short period with the learner bike, get what you want - probably not a liter or giant bagger - but otherwise, get what you want. Something being "too good" is never a reason to tell someone else to not buy it.

After coming back to riding after 30 years (last bike was a TZR250) I wanted a bigger bike but also understood I am new again and wanted something that I could grow into but not be to brutal. Also I have a 28" inseam so lower bike needed. I did consider the ZX4RR (in UK its more powerful) but decided on a 24 CBR650R (red of course). Which I dont think is out in the US yet. Happy with my choice, I wanted an inline 4 as closer to my old 2 stroke style, less power down low and then takes off :). So far so good. Enjoying the bike and at 94hp its fun when you wind it up. Again its so nice to have all types of sport bikes now to suite everyones tastes in style and engine. Good all round review.

All jokes aside, great episode about 2 great bikes under 10k a lot of newer riders or casual riders will be considering. I've ridden the ZX4RR and the chassis is really great. The true potential of that engine shines when they're unlocked which most people will do almost immediately. Graves has a lot of really awesome parts for that platform. The GSX8R does have an amazing engine, but I was really turned off by the weight of it. Some people may not mind it but I'm a shorter rider @ 5'8" and I definitely felt it.

That ZX4 isn't meant to be a track king on day 1. It has a fully adjustable suspension for a reason. It _needs_ the ECU flashed if you're going to track it; that's not negotiable for the track. It requires more time to get setup right for each rider. Of course he feels like it's gutless coming out of the corner... it's missing 33% of its power, and especially missing power at 10k+ rpm. The Suzuki is more friendly to take from dealership to track. But that's also the best it will ever be. Nothing wrong with that. Just 2 very different philosophies. The ZX is meant to be tinkered, adjusted, fine tuned, modified. It's like a 90s JDM tuner car.

These two bikes actually have a similar HP curve on dyno. The flashed zx4rr is like the GSX-8R but offset 5000 RPM. The GSX should take off a lot faster either way though. That drag race was a lot closer than I thought it'd be for a gimped 4RR. I definitely think the 4RR is better to start with, it is relaxed slow HP curve especially unflashed, but when you need power, rev it up and it's there

I know nothing about bike racing but that track surface looks horrible.. is that a typical track surface cuz I would have imagined they'd be perfect condition

The suzuki 8R is a quick little bike that's a very comfortable ride and very easy to ride just an all around nice bike to ride especially at the price.

zx-4rr with a proper alu frame would have been sweeeeet... now we got a steel budget frame that wants to look like a twin spar alu frame just to trick those that are not into bikes that much.

It's sad the aftermarket is the only solution to get the ZX from 49 horsepower at @14200 rpm to a whopping 76 horsepower. But with the same aftermarket help, the 8R makes 88 hp and bags more torque.

270 crank; i get it that the 2nd cyl fires after 270 degrees on the crank but wouldn't the other cylinder fire only after 90 degrees? how is this better then 180 degree crank?

The fact that is fires so soon after is what gives it the smoothness advantage. From the short bit I read about it..

The crank goes around twice for every power stroke. So its 270-450-270-450 etc. A 180 degree crank would go 360-360-360-360.

@@DogmaticShrew But how is it better?
@Expertshot777

It is mostly a noise and vibration difference. A 270 degree crank has the same firing interval as a 90 degree V-twin like a SV650 or Ducati. To most peoples ears, the uneven firing interval of a 90 degree V-twin or 270 parallel twin sounds alot nicer than a 180 paralell twin which sounds like a lawn mower engine. 270 degree twins also do not have the awful rocking couple of a 180 degree twin (or not to the same extent) so they are generally less buzzy to ride on the highway. The reason they cost more is due to manufacturing as 270 degree twins require a twisting process during forging which is more expensive. But in terms of power and torque per cc theres is very little difference. 270 degree twins can generally be made larger due to the better balance though. Think africa twin 1100. Last difference is in torque pulses. The uneven firing interval is said to improve traction and make it easier to reach the limit. (Think yamaha cross plane vs traditional I4s. or big bang engines in motogp). However with small capacity bikes like these that can barely break traction, it is not a concern. Thanks for listening to my rant
