6:44 a note on this, so the guys name was Hisashi Ouchi (not pronounced “ouchy” if that’s what you’re thinking, though it would be apt), he basically received the biggest dose of radiation anyone has ever received without dying instantly, but he suffered extreme radiation sickness. They assembled a whole team of doctors and medical experts/scientists to try and help him, they weren’t “keeping him alive to see what happens”, but they actually thought they had a chance, albeit slim, to nurse him back to health. Ultimately though, while radiation sickness is usually a case of either dying fairly soon after exposure or most likely surviving since the source of the radiation damage is gone and your body can start healing the internal damage, Hisashi had received such an enormous dose that his body was basically continuously irradiating itself and prevented it from healing. There’s a really interesting video by Wendigoon about the case, I can highly recommend watching it

I’ve been seeing a lot of people talking about Hisashi Ouchi and almost every comment or post I read gets the story wrong. Wendigoon made a fantastic video about it that I highly recommend watching as it explains everything. His being kept alive wasn’t some twisted experiment or done just to see what would happen. Hisashi and his family asked the doctors to keep trying. He wanted to live for his wife and his family. During the 83 days he was kept alive in that hospital he was still able to communicate verbally and non verbally for a portion of it and the staff did their best to keep him as comfortable as they could help him be. No matter what was happening Hisashi himself never gave up hope and was very polite and friendly to the medical staff. They were all fond of him and his family and, even though the chances were slim that they could, they wanted to save him. If he or his family had requested they stop treatment sooner they would have. It was ultimately up to his wife to stop the treatment in the end like she did. This isn’t a story about medical malpractice or doctors forcing a human being to suffer just to fuck around and find out. This is a story of a persons strength and will to live for themselves and their family, and a story of the extreme lengths the medical staff were willing to go to help him.

The radiation story Ludwig was on about is exaggerated heavily online, the guy gave consent to be kept alive and all things considered the doctors took pretty great care of him. Wendigoon has a pretty great video on it called “the most painful death ever” (it’s still a horrific story but there’s no evil scientists keeping him alive for the sake of it)
