This guy saved Aptera...I've been following progress periodically (instead of constantly watching the grass grow), so the leaps in progress, innovation, new ideas, and even smarter ways of explaining the advantages of this car. I took a motorcycle riding class that was funded by insurance companies and motorcycle manufacturer's. At the end the instructor invited us to dinner after the course had officially ended...and he finally answered the question we all had "Why does your Goldwing lit up like a Christmas tree?" He said "Because it's not if, but when." The whole table got silent. Then he went on to tell us about how he was rear ended and the driveshaft on his previous Goldwing was rammed through the front of the engine and he was launched like a projectile. And he still rides. None of this would happen with an Aptera. I hope people don't think the motorcycle classification is a negative in terms of safety. It's based on the number of wheels it has, and possibly because it has two open wheels. This thing is safer than most cars made a decade ago - the same cars we grew up riding in. If I didn't need room for four, or could afford to have a Model Y and an Aptera...I'd have both just because I geek out on efficiency and solar power. I can't wait to see these running around and showing up at C&Cs.

Thank you for bringing this up. I have over 400,000 miles on motorcycles, and have had a car totaled from being rear ended by someone who fell asleep. The first Aptera built an in house FMVSS part 216 crash test rig and designed and tested their prototypes for safety. The person who oversaw this effort now gives crash test safety court testimony as an expert witness. The current design has been virtually crash tested thousands of times and the design optimized for safety. When they have production intent vehicles available for test, they will be voluntarily tested to FMVSS part 200 automotive standards, and the results published by a third party agency.

In the UK at least the classification is done on weight, under 400kg and it is a tricycle or quadricycle. This does not include fuel, and on EVS, this means, it does not include the weight of the battery, (unless they have changed this rule) so depending on how much of the Aptera's weight is battery this might get classed as a car in the UK , I am not sure. I am so impressed by the Aptera and I have put my name on the list.

I'll believe it is safe when you see them entered in demolition derby contests. Competitors still favor 1960's full-size 4 door sedans like Ford LTD, Chevy Impala, and Chrysler Newport. The 1964-68 Chrysler Imperial is banned at most events since "too strong". My first vehicle was a 1974 Honda 350-4. Never enjoyed riding a motorcycle and only bought it since the gas crisis. Don't take this the wrong way, but take a look at the design of the Aptera. Where's your carrying capacity? What versatility do you have when it's only got room for 2 people? It's all about the trade-offs, and for most applications, industry-standard stuff is pretty well-rounded. EDIT: I misunderstood what David meant by "obsolete", he was commenting on planned obsolescence. I thought he meant it blows everything out of the water. Not sure how I got that so wrong, but here we are. However, there's still some interesting points to make about Aptera's design trade-offs. For the given footprint of a car, a conventional shape packs more capacity while having ample range. The same basic frame and body panels can be re-used for multiple models of cars if additional rows of seats are added, too. Even though Aptera says they're working on a 4-seater model, that'll require an almost complete redesign, making manufacturing more complex without much of a benefit in profit. Don't get me wrong, as a college student, this would be an amazing car to own. It's just that the consumer base for Aptera is the 1- or 2- person daily driver car market. But, that means as soon as you need more space, you need another car, and at $25k for an Aptera… 🤷

@@mattbrody3565, The Aptera will or wont suit consumers depending on their needs. In my circumstance it would make an excellent second vehicle. My wife owns a small Mazda hatch and I own a diesel ute which I use both for work and doing general household chores. We rarely have more than one person in either vehicle, let alone three or four. The Aptera has more than enough room for the average "grocery run". Most of the time I can get everything I need into the panniers of an E bike. The Aptera looks like a luxury vehicle by comparison.

Disagree, people don’t buy cars for fuel efficiency. A vehicle is ether a tool or status symbol. The only mainstream market for this vehicle is a work car. This is such an incredible value for an EV. This is exactly what we need with modern electric cars especially if we want to transform our society to be carbon free. I love Tesla and other EVs but they obviously are not that much better than just a normal gas car when it comes to co2 produced. Due to the fact they have big batteries. The Aptera has a small battery but with high efficiency it gets lots of range so it’s way better for the environment because you’re not using huge batteries to overcome inefficient design just to get decent range (biggest problem with most EVs really). But with the Aptera that is not a problem. Not to mention the solar panels which generate clean free electricity which provides enough range for most people without ever using grid power which is awesome as well. As far as I’m concerned this is exactly what we need for the future of transportation If this company can make this happen, it would simply be amazing for our society. Think about it. Having 1000 mile range vehicle, incredibly efficient, cheap, free solar power, self driving, even off road capable really you can’t beat it. All in a package that is also easy to repair, now that is exactly what we need.

@@squeakD everything is good except for the 40 mile claim. TM3 has 250Wh/mile, they claim 100Wh/mile. That's already quite a bold claim, as TM3 is the current industry leader. Assuming the mileage is correct, they say that their badly angled patch of cells will generate double the energy as a full-size well-angled panel only reaches on a good day. 15 miles a day on a good day is what I say sounds feasible, and that's nice but they should have left the panels out imo. Not enough advantage except for the PR maybe.

@@konstantinanthonyromanov6952 Technically their math does checkout, but the marketing is a bit overly flamboyant about it. Notice how when their CEO is asked about it he says "up to 40 miles". That's just it, up to, not on average. The math suggests on your average day throughout the year you'll probably get around 36 miles of charge as it's a 700W solar array and the car only weighs between 1800-2200 pounds depending on the model you get. That's still really impressive, but definitely more realistic. You also have to remember this is also assuming you live in California or somewhere with comparable solar radiance, which you probably do not. Thanks to the federal energy regulatory commission, I was able to find the energy radiance of my area in southern PA. From here I could calculate my miles of charge a day which on average was 33 miles. But being in the north, the losses in the winter are far higher than most places. In the charts it showed in the summer nearly the full 40 miles with some days in the winter being as low as 13. You really need to remember this is an annual average, not a guaranteed daily intake.

But I think that is likewise overestimated since if you are close enough to the poles there are times of the year with no sun whatsoever.

That was the misleading part. $25,000 is for the lowest package, not what you see in the video. And considering what we've seen with other electric vehicle start-ups' "promised prices", I wouldn't be too confident in that staying the same. The low price point doesn't get you the solar, and you only get a battery pack that provides around 250mi of range. For about $34,000 you can get 400mi of range and the full solar package (which gets you the "up to" 40mi of range per day), and all-wheel drive. With a $7,000 rebate, that wouldn't be a horrible deal, but only if this is really the setup that works for you. Other manufacturers will be offering competitive prices for more traditional vehicles (more passengers, more wheels, not considered a "motorcycle") but you will always have an electric bill. That last point is going to be the real distinguishing element for many people.

After bout 5 years you would save so much on gas you paid for the vehicle. I mean that's just crazy. Yeah a battery pack replacement is probably inevitable after 5 years but if they can produce them cheap enough its worth it. Seemed like a small pack, if it's $3,000 every 5 years to keep it going that ain't horrible and again you make it right back essentially not paying for gas. I bought my Honda for 20k and it cost me 65 a week in gas. 5 years it will prob be worth 5 grand meaning I wasted 15,000 owning the car and about 18,000 so its cost me $33,000 to commute 5 years, to where this essentially pays for itself and theoretically if it last with no repairs past that mark it like your getting paid to drive it

You don't get the full solar package for that price. What was said and shown in the video is a bit misleading. It's $900 more for the full solar package from the base. The base price gets you front wheel drive ($2,500 more for all-wheel drive). You only get 250mi of range with the base model; it's about $4,000 more to get 400mi, $10,000 more to get 600mi, and $20,000 more to get 1,000mi, but most people won't need those higher ranges. And of course there are other add-ons, such as autonomous driving ($1,300), off-road kit ($1,000), camping kit ($600), etc. For a 400mi range, full solar package, all-wheel drive model, they're saying $33,200 at time of purchase.

@@rogrambo Yeah it's basically the opposition to the push companies have made to you being a "subscriber" to their products and not an "owner". It also pushes back on the regards of not allowing modifications or repairing something personally if you want to. Examples would be how Apple wasn't allowing you to replace the display on your iphone even with a screen from another iphone, Samsung killing your camera if you replaced the screen, Google doing the same thing as Samsung with the Pixel, Tesla only selling package sets and not individual parts, Testa only selling parts directly to certified repair centers, cars requiring a proprietary wireless adapter to program and give it a diagnosis, etc. As you can see, the entire tech industry is full of pushes for you to not really have the right to modify or repair your parts. In most cases, the reason is just so they can sell the repairs to you directly over allowing you to go to external businesses like computer repair shops, car repair shops, or even do it yourself so you have to go to them. The downside is almost the entire industry has gone this way so finding options that don't fit under anti consumer practices like this is almost impossible.

@@fuduzan5562 well, OP is talking for him personally, it is really pricy, it is 4 me too, not for being a "vehicle" kind of expensive, but expensive in general, right here, as a matter of fact salary in LatAm (Argentina) is 250 USD x month average Tring to save 25.900 dollars, it will take your lifetime after accounting for life expenses, fantasy case scenario +100 months if you lived off photosynthesis and paid no taxes or expenses, cuadruple (4 times) that time if you have to pay stuff for home expenses in general 🏠 and you are left with 40-60 USD a month of savings. Let's say best case scenario you save 60 USD per month, never go on vacation and ignore holidays, Xmas etc to save even more, you don't replace things that break, nor pay for any reasonable services. It takes so long to save the money 💰 here in Argentina at least, since also savings are worth less year by year, that you are dragged down close to poverty while you work everyday of your life here. It's non sense but it's real, and you would say buying a mansion is not expensive being in musk boots, an ev for 25k not expensive for a wealthy country average joe, and in the boots of average or even above mid class person/family here, it's not even a reality, it's fantasy My hopes are that EVs like these become so popular, that we don't have to "save money" for gas, or use no fuel at all, that's just toxic flammable and so bad for everyone, technology should become mainstream ASAP.

You are worried about 20 miles a day?
@mattb6001
@mattb6001 2 жыл бұрын
@@monkeymanjrj not sure exactly what you mean by that, but with my current commute of ~20-30 miles a day this should do it almost 100% on solar. And if I do end up moving further from work, it will still make the commute no problem. I didn’t want to explain all that in my original comment. There are a lot more boxes this thing ticked such as price, 2 seater, looks cool, top speed and acceleration, etc.

21:48 Thank you! This has been the number one question i had. I can't see any local mechanic knowing how to service these, and I live nowhere near Aptera. Knowing I can get parts anywhere in the US gives me big peace of mind. I'm still not gonna preorder one 'cause i wanna wait for the first few customers to get theirs and review them first and for the production car to get a safety rating, but if the car turns out good I'm definitely getting one.

I live in Iowa and will be reporting on an early unit. My local repair shop can't wait to get a look at it, and I don't think they are unusual.

A solar powered vehicle that need not to be recharged is another exception when it comes to the mastery of the circuitry and the storage of juice. It should be able to hold and store plenty of it, while in different shifts of power for hybrid types.

Anybody who knows anything about Aptera Motors should remember that things didn't go too good the first time for the company in the early 2000s. When they folded in 2011, it was actually a pretty sad scene. So I was surprised to see they came back a couple years ago as an EV manufacturer. The promises are pretty big for Aptera 2.0, at least as big as they were when they tried to get off the ground almost 20 years ago. I wish Chris and Steve much success and hope they go all the way, because second acts or returns in the automotive industry hardly ever happen. If I had $25 or so stacks to burn, I'd probably go for it. The Aptera looks pretty good, hope it's not too good to be true.

Gotta love EVERYTHING about this company & car...ethics, morals, engineering standards through the roof and a genuinely nice guy as well 🥳 The quality and price is just amazing!...I honestly wasnt sold on first sight, but after watching that demonstration and listening to the design & build process...WOW!! Wish Apterea all the best for the future...this a company that DESERVES to be supported and driven towards success, that car is just incredible!...relatively free transportation cost for under 20k and with FULL tech/Mech support and future proofing built in. Kia Kaha Apterea team...so good to see a company actively supporting the right to repair on a modern electric car - again, very impressed by the morals & ethics shown by Apterea - Kia Kaha!!
