I liked your disclaimer about bear spray not being a bear repellent. There is a story about a bush pilot in Alaska who dropped a hunter off at a remote landing strip for a hunting trip. As the pilot took off, he looked over at the hunter and noticed that he was appearing to be having a seizure by the side of the air-strip. He quickly circled back around to land, and ran up to the hunter who was still jerking and writhing on the ground. The hunter was conscious but in clear distress. The pilot asked him what happened, and the hunter explained that first he sprayed on his insect repellent, and then he sprayed on his bear repellent. Not a good misconception to have.

MT University video says NOT to wait until the bear is within 15ft. DO NOT WAIT until it's closer to spray, spray right away even if the bear is up to 60' away because a charging bear will reach 30' in one second, at which point he'll run into your spray. If you wait until the bear is closer, you may be taken down. DO NOT WAIT! Also when you spray, hold can firmly and yell forcefully, "NO, NO NO!!" Voice and body language should be telling the bear YOU are in control of that spray and it must stay away!

Great job!! This is really helpful. Having just encountered a mountain lion at 15 ft last week outside Park City, UT, I’ve decided carrying bear spray whenever I head into the wild is probably a good idea. Mtn.Biking, hiking, trail running, fly fishing.... whatever I do, I’m thinking it’s best to be prepared. It’s simply a fact....the population serge we’ve been experiencing in the Mtn West this last decade combined with significant whether changes, we’re seeing a lot more human/animal interaction.

I too hike, fly fish, bike in the great outdoors in Idaho and always carry bear spray with me as my first attempt if conditions are right (no wind, no rain, no surprised up close, no stalking, have enough prep time) and I carry a Glock 20 for backup. I hope to never ever use my Glock but I will have it in case to increase my odds of not being attacked, mauled or killed. If you are unaware, bears, cougars, moose, elk are very fast. If they charge you, it's quicker than you can ever imagine. I also had a 300 lb black bear sneak up on my from behind while fly fishing and thankfully ran it off without using either one. He/she got 20 feet from me before I caught a glimpse to bring to my attention. I fumbled trying to get my bear spray unsuccessfully and gave up then drawed my gun. Thankfully after yelling and screaming, it walked away but I was ready for the worse.

This is an awesome video, and how you presented everything was top notch. The test report you did on all the sprays was very helpful. I have watched a number of bear spray videos to date. And it seems that between all of them, the Frontiersman seems to outshine the other brands when you look at all the data. Plus, Frontiersman also offers you the option to purchase “practice” spray, where the ingredients are inert. I do have a question. Did the Counter Assault brand include the small strap that keeps the trigger safety plug from getting lost?

Fairly scientific analysis. As a STEM person I appreciate your effort to tabulate all the data points. So far this is the only channel which has reviewed bear spay in great detail. Here is a final data point: The hiking company REI sells Counter Assault exclusively. Idk if this is because they have a preferential contract with the manufacturer or because it has proven to be reliable among their hiker clientele. So if REI and Grand Teton NP both prefer the CA can, then perhaps it's the better product? What are your thoughts?

@@WereintheRockies thats right. Also, a good data point would have been nice to see is the shelf life of each spray. Shelf life ranges between 3 and 4 years for each make/model. A 1-year difference can be a significant.
@oleopathic
@oleopathic Жыл бұрын
I like the scientific table of data at the end of video. What I would add to it to help people decide on brand/model and perhaps which may be added in a followup or an update video: . Shelf life. FM = 3 yrs. CA = 4 yrs. . Composite price as a function of $, volume, shelf life. So, Price = $/oz/days in shelf life. My own calcs revealed that the sweet spot is the FM at 9.2 oz when we consider the $, volume (oz), and shelf life (in days). What do you all think? PS: Since bear spray has shelf life, I.e. is perishable, it might be a better idea to commit to a brand/model with smaller shelf life as the can's contents can degrade as a function of temperature (lows and highs) and vibrations (if kept in moving car often).

You totally should have tried UDAP Bear Spray. I've heard it had the highest pressure/discharge rate. Its also slightly more fine dispersement so it effects the lungs and eyes faster. Also another tip, you can get higher concentrations as long as its for "humans". For example "aimhunter" makes a 10% formula in a 9 ounce size. It technically should be quite a bit hotter. Its $20 on the most popular online shopping store.

Thank you! Bebearaware channel has a video with demonstrations on what you should do in each common scenario, whether the bear is 60 ft, 30 ft, and 15ft. All of them say spray before there is a potential charge and at any distance. Also, he recommends not buying a spray with less than 7 second spraying. It needs a minimum of 7 seconds and I think he mentioned a minimum of 30 ft. Most bear attacks are when a bear is coming up a hill from the creek bed, there is wind or running water preventing it from hearing you and it’s startled.
@Stargirl_-wz8ub
@Stargirl_-wz8ub 2 ай бұрын
Clarifying that the reason I think I remember him mentioning to spray every before the bear gets to 15 ft is because it will create a cloud that the beat will run into anyway and might give you more time and turn the beat around before it becomes a charge or worse.

You can take several steps to help you be safe, including making noise while hiking, hike in groups, don't run on trails, be aware of you surroundings, and secure your food and garbage. Don't attack a bear, only spray if it seems aggressive (and if it's within 30 ft). The spray will affect more than its eyes. It will affect his mouth, nose, etc making it hard to breathe.

This stuff works great on curious bears and the two legged predators.. However, like humans, some bears are more susceptible to capsaicin than others, and if a bear is truly aggressive- you shouldn’t count on it as your only tool. Many men right here on KZfaq have been mauled nearly to death immediately after spraying a bear..

So just so yall know, a bear can cover 30 ft in one second. You better start spraying before 15 feet. I was told by a friend who is a bear hunting guide that you want the bear to run through the cloud. So figure the bear is 30 ft away and you start spraying, he will be running through the cloud around the 20 ft mark which is perfect. Now you have only 0.66 of a second for the spray to take effect before it starts mauling you. If you have ever been sprayed, pepper spray can take up to two minutes to FULLY kick in. Even to kick in a little takes usually at least 2 to 3 seconds to start. If a bear stops, most of the time the blast startles them into stopping. The spray on works later to keep them away and not start up again. By the way, my friend who is the guide use to say, "do you know how to tell the difference between black bear poop and brown bear poop? Black bear poop has berrys in it. Brown bear poop has bells in it and smells like pepper spray." 🤣

You sprayed a stationary bear. You don't want to spray a bear unless it comes at you. You want to put up a wall that the bear must pass through. When it does , it will feel the effects of the chemicals when it contacts the cloud. That can be 30 feet or less . Other videos I have seen say length of spray time is an important feature because some bears require more deterrent. Counter Assault was developed by a biologist at Montana University who had been attacked by a bear. It was the first bear spray developed, and was tested to be effective.When.it comes to my defense, price is not much of an issue.

Counter Assault does have a 10.2 oz size that lasts 8 seconds, but the fog does not seem as dense. The Frontiersman actually spays a larger amount at 1.84oz per second for a more concentrated cloud. Bear spray is NOT TOXIC, it is nothing more than capsaicin oils and a propellant. It is a good idea to have a second canister in case the wind shifts or if there is a sow and 2 year old cubs that are nearly as big as the sow you have got big problems. If in a group make sure multiple people have bear spray and/or a firearms. Overall good testing. Below is a YT link to the Be Bear Aware Organization that shows how to properly deploy bear spray on a charging bear. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/isBle615v56xlqs.html

Y’all never tested the Potency of the 3 Sprays. I think y’all need to do a redo and spray each other for a Potency test. Potency is far more Important than the length

The one thing you guys should have done possibly you did do is film how the effects affected you. you should have showed that to everybody so that they would understand what to expect if they ever had to fire off this stuff. So if you did happen to film yourself hacking and choking and coughing and having the runny nose and the whole bit you need to put that on KZfaq so that we can see what it does to you guys. it's knowledge, and that's what we need. is knowledge on what this stuff does, not only to the bear but you because if it's going to incapacitate you. you know, what good is bear spray if it incapacitates the person using it. the bear will just get upset and then eat you anyway. anyway just food for thought.

LMAO. Spray is for saving the bear's life, not yours. (not to mention selling lots of bear spray) A high caliber weapon with FMJ ammo, in the well-trained hand is far superior self-protection, if you're interested in saving YOUR life. A warning shot is always an option, if you're feeling gratuitous. Under bear-attack, most people are not. You only live once.

That’s not true. Statistics actually show that people using bear spray survive more than those using a gun. Those are the facts. Of course if someone is expert at shooting bears with a gun I guess they’d do better than the statistics but this video is obviously intended for avg hikers. There are good videos posted by experts who spend their careers studying bears that go into the reasons why spray works better but it’s most often simply that the spray is quick and wide unlike a gun large enough to take down a bear (not wound and anger it). Personally I’ll go with what works statistically better.
