We took 3 months away from our brand new catamaran, but there was a very good reason why. In this week's episode, we discuss the enormous work that's been done to RR2 recently to make improvements and modifications based on our shakedown cruise.

We took our boat Womble, the first Seawind 1600 Passage Maker across the Pacific from East Coast USA to New Zealand. Throughout the 19 month journey Seawind supported us with any design upgrades, advice and support en route. On arrival in NZ they had the boat inspected by professionals and then sent a shipwright in Paul (simply legend) to install all upgrades required and deal with all warranty items. Full credit to Mike and his team for a level of service and support that is frankly pretty rare in the boat building industry these days. Huge thank you to you both and respect for your openness in sharing what it is really like to bed in a new boat. It certainly helps you explore a whole new range of emotions!!😂

Kudos to both Seawind and yourselves for working so well together to get RR2 whipped into shape ready for your future adventures. Impressed with Seawind being so willing to go above and beyond other manufactures to get things right. Future owners will be so grateful for all the work and effort you to have put into the past few months.

I have Lagoon 440 hull 001. You better believe that hull 001 and hull 423 are completely different boats. Massive, incremental improvements. Even the Beneteau spare parts site requires that you enter your hull # so that you order the right replacement parts. On that site, you can see that there are MANY changes that happened as soon as hull 003.

With a literally new design, you have to have a good mindset understanding teething problems, especially with something as complex as a catamaran. Even though you babysat it all the way through the birthing process, when it pops out, you still have a long way to go. I believe you chose a builder well that can see what you're talking about instead of corporate bean counters saying no, on that, and no on this, and - you should have thought about what you wanted before we built it attitude. Luckily you're seasoned sailors so you had experience on your side. Well Done Sea Wind, and well done you guys!

Great recap, bottom line hull 2 is still a prototype. Seawind is lucky to have you to "fine tune" their design. People who buy hull 32 and beyond will thank you.

It seems that the overwhelming percentage of boat manufacturers would not even entertain the idea of having a second hull build (or first) documented as has been done here, so they obviously were expecting to have additional issues as you sailed RR-2 for the last several months. It's good to see that they are committed to making this an extremely good product. I think future owners will be very happy with that!

I have to commend you for bringing the issues to Seawind and equally commend the manufacturer for agreeing with your issues and then stepping up to correct them. Very unusual for a manufacturer to participate in the effort to correct anything. I am a power boater and have had issues after delivery that were never addressed by the manufacturers. Bravo to you as well as Seawind! Cheers!!!

I guessed from the social media response that the last video got mixed feedback. A lot of armchair sailors :) It is good to hear that some of the teething issues are being addressed. And you two look happier. I hired a cat and it dragged anchor- we had 8 times scope - I concluded that if I ever buy a boat I would have the biggest anchor available - lol. I look forward to things settling down and its back to cheaky chappy and fun aussie!!

The solar panels burn marks scares me. If the boat catches fire, you are toast. I would not be sleeping aboard until replaced. Am I missing something? No EPIRB? Why not? Is that a law? Just a different country with no coast guard?😮😮

Guys, I am from Brazil, and I build apartments in Curitiba. I feel that it is really similar to deliver a boat like this complexity of a 25 store building with 84 Apartments. We usually spend the next six months fixing things that should be working better and that we're not perfect designed for the job. I am really sorry for you guys going through this, I love your show, I hope one day you can visit us at "Baia de Paranaguá", Paraná - Brazil

As someone who works in design, to the people who say "these problems shouldn't have happened", problems happen. The only way to make a perfect something is to keep the design on paper. It's only when a thing is built and used that many of these problems become apparent. The trick is to minimize issues and fix the ones that sneak through. Design teams have to balance the design with the deadline.

Looking at it from a different perspective... as much as everyone is giving Seawind props for following through I imagine Seawind appreciates your candor, acceptance and understanding that such a complicated endeavor requires sorting out and modifications in order to be one of the best. Whether or not perfection is ever attainable, it is never reached on the first attempt. Not having to deal with impatient, judgmental and/or caustic customers allows everyone involved to put their best efforts into creating and installing improved modifications. So, in my book, all parties involved deserve a pat on the back. 👍

Designing and manufacturing things is hard. They could have spent a lot of time and money on prototypes and still wouldn't have gotten the kind of feedback you can give them from a customer point of view. I am only doing software but even the best designs survive the first customer contact :) So instead giving out the first hulls quickly to the customers and generously fix any issue and shortcomings is quicker and smarter.

Following you, the O’Kellys and Wynns all of whom are experiencing life with first gen yachts is really revealing about design, equipment, life asail, working with the builders and overall happiness. I can’t help but think of what it was like 20 or more years ago deciding on and commissioning a boat without the wealth of KZfaq experiences you and others provide. If it wasn’t written down in a book or you knew someone knowledgeable about your choices you were on your own. These days it is actually easier (a head full of knowledge) and harder (a head full of knowledge) to decide.

The car manufacturers build at least a hundred prototypes before they build the first customer car. You really have the first prototype and Seawind will continue to improve the 1350’s as more customers feed back and the build process matures. You are fortunate to have picked an excellent company to work with.

Hi Ruby Rose! Great to hear SeaWind making things right for Hull #2 and beyond! After-all, this new boat is still in BETA you might say... There is one thing I must say in regard to the solar that I personally believe is very important. I'm of the opinion solar panels "must" have a means of being cooled because they do get hot. This is why I believe Balance Catamaran has actually done it RIGHT in regard to solar. I think you know Balance has built in raised brackets for glass solar panels to rest upon. This also makes for easy replacement when panels have reached the end of their efficiency. If SeaWind would make all of their panels "raised" on brackets, they will have made the solar system run more efficiently for a longer period of time before requiring replacement. That's my two cents. Your yacht is still a great performance cruiser to have! Please don't think I'm knocking it. I only wanted to mention this in the hope SeaWind might at least consider having "raised" glass solar panels as an "option" at additional cost. I know it would add additional weight with glass panels. However, I believe it's worth it if you consider the gained efficiency and ease of replacement once that efficiency is ran out and requires replacement. Look forward to the next video! Stay Awesome! David
