Absolutely. Thank you. You don't need to overcomplicate things to be successful. The nem tank is about as simple as it gets, and the main system follows all basic reefing principles with some redundancy built in for backups in case anything ever were to happen. -Jeff

@@reef_culture As part of my old setup I had a nem tank and a reef and did KZfaq videos. All people were interested in was the nems. I was always like look at this other tank. It is harder but people were drawn to the nems. I did not have as many as you but mine were some of the biggest I've seen on KZfaq or at nay aquarium. Maybe that was why.

That was a dope nem tank. 👌 I hear that name get thrown around, first time seeing one. Blak widow nems. Great video. N nice save on that advice text. My favorite part of the tours! N from the forms n some big farmers. Seems a lot of people are on that moon🌙 shine. I would like to see a nano kit or just something more affordable for trace chasing. 😮‍💨 See what the future holds.

Thank you so much! Black Widows, yes. They are the same species as other bubble tips, just a very pretty color variety with distinct webbing on the body. (thus the spider reference) Moonshiners can be a large initial investment, but unless you have a large water volume, most of the elements last a long, LONG time. I like to say RM will get you the last 5% of the way there with color and growth. It's not going to stop a coral from dying, it's when you have mastered everything else and really want to push for the last 5% to really peak out your colors and growth rates. --Jeff

haha! Well, you can always run a sump in another room and make that your fish room. The original plan for this build was to knock out a wall for the DT and make a separate bedroom the fish room. (all on the first floor) That plan got changed with the girlfriend wanted to turn that room into her craft room (we each get an area for our hobbies) and I got stuck with the basement. If you are going to do something, go big or go home, so I made it the best I could. :) -Jeff

Battery backup is so important. Just like the patent pending ReefBoxx that allows you to use just about any batteries to back up your aquarium. I sent Mark one that he is currently using and Jake who loved the idea a handful of them to use and hand out some out as he pleased. Would like to send Remy and Raj one as well so they can backup easy and affordably as well.

Hey Jeff, what is your method to getting the nems off the rock or whatever they are attached to ?
@reef_culture
@reef_culture Жыл бұрын
Ahhh! The magic question I get asked all the time. If a nem is stuck to a rock, it is VERY difficult to remove it. All of the ones I sell out of this tank (5-10 or so a week) come from the glass or acrylic nem box on the side. Super easy to peel them off with your thumbnail once you have done it a bunch. The rainbow nem in the wine glass in the frag tank in the video actually got removed from a rock a few days before filming. He was on the rock, stinging SPS and needed to be removed. Took the rock out of water, let it hang upside down for 5 minutes or so, sometimes that does the trick, it didn't this time. Had to very carefully scrape him out. He made it, but that is also why he didn't look too happy in the video. Give him a few weeks and he will turn around. -Jeff

@reef_culture
@reef_culture Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. As Remy mentioned, the Yellow and Hippo in the nem system already have their new homes slated in the 280 currently being built along with several coral grow out tanks. However, whereas the video makes it look like nems are covering 99% of the tank, under the rock structure, there is actually quite a bit of free swimming space that is totally nem free. (as they walk away from the no-light areas). They sleep under there and can come out in the open water and swim. It's actually really neat to watch the Hippo swim right between the nems and not touch any of them. Also, that Yellow is only in there as he was supposed to have a home in the 220, but decided to be a jerk and bully the other Yellow, so he got moved downstairs. haha. -Jeff

Oh don't think the worst on how a full crash would be the only way to build it back better. But, yes, I totally get it on how once you are plumbed in, changes become exponentially harder to do. This was my 4th build overall and first in my home. From the first three, I kept a list of things that were either challenging with the first ones, or simply a pain to do, and kept in all in mind when designing this one. The easier you make things to do, the more likely you are to do them, the more likely you are setup for long-term success. The system isn't perfect, there are still things I would have done differently now looking back on it, but am quite happy with how it turned out. :) -Jeff

@@reef_culture Most definitely Serviceability is a key aspect many don't think about. I've been trying to suggest to manufacturers to have connectors closer to in-tank devices to avoid needing to splice something in or pull all the harnessing out just to service it. Seems to fall on def ears. Some day I may pull the trigger to revamp my entire system if I truly want to upgrade my 8 tank system and start fresh.

Thanks for the comment. When you design a system right, it can actually take far less time than you would think to maintain. Of course, most of us do this as a hobby which means we should enjoy spending time on things we love, right? Everything is scalable. You can make something very large or very small and the time required to maintain it scales with it. -- Jeff
