In the quest to find a good show partner, Sheryl, Aubrey, Tara and I drive out to Rolling Brook Stable in Casstown, Ohio to test ride some saddle seat horses that were up for auction in the Winter Addis Equine Auction.
If you're in the area of Casstown and you're in the market for a good riding coach to give you lessons, definitely give David Cusac and the crew of Rolling Brook Stable a look at rollingbrookstable.com
If you are an equestrian business that would like to sponsor me or send me some of your products to review, email me at adamsonequestrian@gmail.com

1st horse - (Hunter) 2nd horse (Dressage) 3rd horse: Saddle seat Horse- I also would not put a youth rider on a horse with a long shanked broken snaffle, she should have been riding all three in snaffles, either half or full cheek. Rider has an excellent seat! She just needs refinement and some cue work-- but her basic seat is outstanding. Great job- I purposely wrote this before I saw which (if any horse was chosen) - Ive been a "r' rated judge and a trainer for 25+ years :) (PS - Try an American Saddlebred!!!

Why does anyone today need to ride a horse with a huge bit, curb or double bridle? Reminds me of dog owners and 'dominance theorists' (SO 20 century) using prong collars.
@plips71755

It’s nothing like a dog with a big collar. Have you never seen a western bit with long cheeks on the curb. The curb is for tucking, and a snaffle is for lifting. I take it you aren’t in horses. Look at the Spanish Riding School website in Vienna Austria - the Lipizzaners. People who ride with double bridles like those who ride saddleseat (true saddleseat, not these people who ride hunt seat but are using a flat saddle) want their horses to utilize their conformation and move with their heads high, tipped at the poll, noses slightly tucked, moving with high action, knees high and hocks quite collected and up under themselves. Speaking of horses that walk, trot and canter - this is American Saddlebreds, Hackney horses and ponies, Friesian horses, etc. other horses that move with a lot of motion and have classes for saddle-seat but due to the conformation, carry themselves a little differently are Arabians, Morgans, Welsh, shetlands, some draft horse breeds, etc. Some American Saddlebreds are further trained to be 5 gaited. They aren’t born with these gaits but the best are more disposed to pick them up easily either due to conformation, way of going, or bloodlines. Bloodlines can pay a big part in training a saddlebred to be five-gaited. Because you want a more animated, higher motion, more collected moving horse - most horses whether Lipizzaners, American Saddlebreds, Arabians, or even top dressage horses - are ridden in double bridles. The need to have a snaffle and a curb. Before someone rides with a double bridle or a curb bit - they should be proficient riders, be able to ride with quiet hands so as not to hit the horse in the mouth, and quiet legs so as not to be jabbing them in the sides when not needed. A double bridle is used for finesse - a good rider you won’t see the fingers moving the reins. They don’t ride with their arms, they ride with their fingers. Push the horse up with the legs and guide and restrain with their fingers. Riders should not be using a double or a curb until they can control and reasonably collect a horse with a snaffle. A curb, nor a double is used for control. Most trained saddlebreds are ridden at home most days and during the winter with a snaffle, martingale and two sets of reins (one set used like a curb is run through the rings on the martingale). This keeps their mouths soft and responsive. About once a week, they are “tuned” up through all their gaits with the double bridle. Of course when they are being trained, they will wear it more often so they get used to it. Most people don’t realize it but a snaffle can do more damage to the jaws of a horse than a properly fitted double bridle. That said - any bit can be bad in the hands of someone who doesn’t work at the art of riding. A snaffle becomes a jaw breaker with very strong scissor action in the mouth, hitting the palette of the horse in the hands of someone who doesn’t know how to ride very well. I have seen more hobby riders, trail riders doing more damage to their horse’s mouths then any decently trained rider with a double bridle.

Can someone explain Saddleseat to me? I've grown up with English dressage, a little jumping and then later dabbled in Extreme Trail and endurance. What are you looking for in a saddleseat class/horse? What is the progression? How do you prepare a horse over the years in training, how is biomechanically correct motion supported and increased? How do you build up a horse's strength and suppleness over time? All I know are the rail classes where you see horses with very high head carriage going round and round at high energy. But surely that's not all there is to it. Thanks!
@adamsonequestrian4587
@adamsonequestrian4587 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephanie! It depends on what division of saddle seat you want to ride in when it comes to looking for a saddle seat horse. There are typically three divisions: Country Pleasure, English Pleasure and Park. In each division there are differences in how much animation or knee/hock action the horse has. In Country Pleasure, there is the least amount of knee/hock action, more in English Pleasure and most in Park. The saddle itself is much flatter than a hunt seat or dressage saddle and the rider sits further back and has a higher hand carriage to accommodate the larger motion of the horse and higher headset. The main point of saddleseat is to have a horse that has big motion in front and back as well as nice manners and they look like they are a pleasure to ride. As far as I've seen, it's mostly rail work, but just like in hunt seat, there are equitation classes as well where you do rail work as well as a pattern.

As far as the training aspect goes, if you were really interested, I'd find a good saddle seat trainer nearby that can explain their method. I know everyone has their own way of training and as I'm not a trainer, I can't really answer that!

Stephanie Hill The Saddleseat Discipline consists of 6 different breeds. The breeds are the American Saddlebred, Hackney Pony, Standardbred, Arabian, Morgan, and Dutch Harness Horse. These horses are specifically bred to have a high set carriage and have a high stepping motion. There are many different divisions depending on what breed you compete with. For the American Saddlebred the Division are 5-Gaited, 3-Gaited, Park, Show Pleasure, Country Pleasure, Equitation, Park Pleasure, Fine Harness, Driving, Hunter, and Western. For the Morgan’s it is Park, Classic Pleasure, various Driving Classes, Equitation, and in-hand. The Standardbred, Hackney, and Dutch Harness Breed are used for roadster classes. Arabians I don’t know a lot about but the classes are similar to Morgan classes. The training of these horses is riding, driving, and long lining. They use stretchies for resistance training to strengthen the muscles in their legs and it is not painful at all it is all to strengthen their muscles. A lot of Saddleseat horses have padding in their feet to keep them sound. Some horses just need that padding to keep them balanced. The Saddleseat breeds are naturally very high energy but they teach you to ride. They can carry around the smallest 6 year old rider with no problem but challenge an adult rider on them.

the mother gal has a good seat, good balance and excellent leg position which does not move in the trot or the canter; an enviable ss posture! the younger gal needs to learn NOT to bonk the horse with her heels in order to go forward, PRESS DONT BONK!! any ss judge will see the bonking heels and mark her down.

That was her first time riding a saddle seat horse and riding in a saddle seat saddle. Anyone is bound to make mistakes. SS horses have a completely different action compared to hunters which is what she was used to. It's hard to find a different balance at first, which is exactly what she was trying to do. Even seasoned riders aren't perfect. I think she's brave for not only wanting to try something different, but trying it on horses she didn't know which can be nerve wracking on its own. We try to focus on the positives first and foremost and go from there. Appreciate the comment! That's actually her Nana, not her mom! She doesn't age! 😆

@@adamsonequestrian4587 agreed; ive just never seen anyone heelbonk a ss horse, one risks a very sudden aggressive forward jump from the horse if you do that; and the older gal is a granny? what? im a granny and im sure i could not ride a ss horse with that great form! she must have plenty of ss show class experience to keep that posture!
