Japan is in the midst of tapioca craze and WE ARE TOO! Many convenience stores have started selling their own tapioca drinks, but the question remains, are they AS GOOD?
Emma and Natasha are in for a BIG surprise!

Last time I had bubble tea I tried to suck more than one tapioka bubble at one and jammed the straw. I then tried to dejam it by blowing the other way and exploded the drink out of my hand. The sadness of that day haunts me still.

EMMA! The "electric shock" feeling you had with the first drink was a natural response some people have to cold (or, colder than a room temperature drink with ice in it) drinks when sipping through a straw after having had your lips not touch anything cold for a while. Your nerves send a shock because of how surprising the cold is after having been used to your normal body warmth.

I moved to New York in 2013, and discovered bubble tea there. Then when I moved back to my mid-size east coast city, we got bubble tea maybe 5 years ago? Now there's a couple of shops in the area, which I'm really happy about! Bubble tea can have a lot of sugar in it, but if you customize it at a shop, it can be a refreshing drink :D I've thought about learning to make it myself...I'll have to try doing that sometime! Fun video Emma & Natasha! Thx!

I had so much fun watching this video. I had to look in to my facebook postings and found out that in Germany the HYPE hit arround 2011 and I found a lot of shops in Berlin, 2012 they opend shops everywhere in Germany and than they startet closing again short after that. I had japanese friends visiting this year and they told about the hype hit Japan (again?). Luckily we still have a few shops, so we can go there, but we endet making them at home (tastyjapan has a great matcha latte matcha tapioka recipie). So now I love to make bubble tea on my own and it is soooo cheap!!! So this might be a reason why they where closing their shops again. Making on your own costs about 30-60 ¥ and they still sell the "plain" Tapioka Pearl with black milk tea arround 900-1000 ¥ (converted from €) ?

Bubble tea seems to be becoming more popular in the South West of the UK where I live but they don't usually use tapioca pearls. Instead they use these 'pobbles' which are little spheres of fruity liquid with a thin membrane holding it together. Some kind of reaction where one liquid is dropped into another and the reaction forms a kinda skin around the drop? Like the fish eggs in the candy making kits, but bigger lol.
