So I just spent two weeks dramatizing my book for podcast and KZfaq and I had no idea that what I was doing was called "Graphic Audio" :) Thanks for that. Now I can tag it, so people can find it. The new tools really help, but it's still quite a lot of hard work. As for AI, I am using 3 or 4 LLM voices to complement human actors. However, if I could afford it, I would hire all humans, because this is going to have a huge effect on employment of creatives. The future is here and it's as scary as it is exciting...

I absolutely love GA. It’s actually what got me more into reading (listening to?) books. I’ve always found normal audiobooks kind of boring and hard to get into (I’ve finished many books though). The different voice actors, dramatization, and sound effects from GA pulls me into the story. I’ve used it for all Brandon Sanderson books.

GA is a bless. Although i really like physical book, it's really awesome here some voice actor recreate some awesome scence of then books. Some characters are well done (Dalinar, Kaladin, Adolin) and other are just soso (Taravangian), that said, it's a great experience overall. Some of the Word of Radiance and Oathbringer lines in GA are incredible.

Also, Warbreaker GA can be a little awkward. Make sure your kids aren't around during 1 scene in particular 🤣

Pretty sure I know what you’re talking about haha. That book has definitely been the most mature themed Sanderson book so far! (Obviously not to the level of other authors but a bit surprising compared to the others he has)

So glad I switched from the Graphic audio to the normal audio like 10 minutes into the book then 😂😂 - Marty

I've found that with graphic audio it has to be at 1.0 speed. Because it's like a movie, I wouldn't watch a movie at anything but normal speed. You lose all intentions with timing and payoff for music and sounds when the audio is too fast

That’s a good call (learned from experience in my case) ;) I’ve tried movies in accelerated time and everything gets immediately messed up

Interested to see how you feel about Elantris GA. The audiobook reader for it was really flat to me and I considered switching to GA as people said it was better but I ended up just reading physically

Yep definitely felt the same way my first read/listen to Elantris. Will definitely try the GA at least for a little bit to see if it’s any better! That video is definitely coming!

Graphic Audio is like the radio dramas of the 1900’s. So the future is like Orson Welles’ war of the worlds radio production. My kids have loved the graphic audio productions of the Alcatraz series. They prefer them over the audiobooks.

That’s a great way to describe them! And very cool idea, definitely will have to look into doing that for my kids someday!

Yes!!! what Jayden said about these small quirks pulling him out of the story !!! I recently listened to Red Sister by Mark Lawrence, and, now I knoooow this is a nitpick, BUT, the narrator did a very obnoxious Scottish(?) accents with weird intonations for one of the main side characters Clera and... I couldn't. I think maybe it's why I liked RS much less than everyone else seems to :(

somebody could make a lot of money by making an audiobook format that seperates the sound effects and voices so that it can speed up narration while normalizing the occurances of other sounds/music

I really dislike the fact that the books get abridged in the sense that it cuts out 'saids' and certain descriptions because it puts sounds in. I also don't like the fact that in the battle scenes, they have to have constant noise in the background like some dude banging on a kettle constantly

I’m still having a really hard time with it haha… sometimes I feel like it’s a swing and a miss with whichever sound they chose lol

I tried listening to the Whitesand graphic audiobook amd found it absolutely terrible! I kept spending focus on trying to figure out the sound effects and would miss part of the story, or the sounds wouldn't match my imagination of the scene and again, my focus would shift to contextualizing everything and I'd miss part of the story, or a new voice would appear but I wouldn't hear enough of them so that the next time that person jumped in I wouldn't remember who they are. Maybe it was because of my ADHD causing me to hyperfocus on the wrong thing, but I had to listen to just chapter 1 FOUR times to understand what was happening, and I never finished the 2nd chapter. For me, a completely monotone computer voice (assuming proper pronunciation) would be better than the graphic audio BS, because at least then my brain isn't chasing seven billion squirrels while I try to understand the story.

I’m right there with you! Really hard to keep it straight if the audio cues and effects aren’t absolutely perfect. A small issue and I can be taken completely out of the magic of the story

I'm not a fan of GA- The background noise and music just make it harder for me to understand the narration, and the sound effects and other background things don't really help get me into the story at all. This is especially the case when I'm listening to the book in an environment that I already have background noise like when I'm driving, and it's just extra random noise my brain has to filter out to listen to what I care about. I'm kind of split on the multiple narrator/voices- it's great with different voice actors where you can easily identify character voices, versus even good narrators who have a limited number of unique-sounding voices/accents they can use, and generally aren't great at voicing opposite-gender characters. However, with a single narrator, I'll get used to their voice after a while and it becomes easier to listen and understand them, while having different voices all the time doesn't give the same amount of familiarity.

I completely agree! One of the best parts of a book is to be in the story using your own imagination

Lol not a fan of the ai readers because it's all basing stuff off of previous data, I think creativity might plateau because of it.

Definitely have had this thought too! It’ll be interesting to see where we go with the future of art. Definitely think there will always be a big human involvement. Humans like to see what other humans can imagine and create!

I listen to a lot of books, and I absolutely abhor graphic audio. I will accept two, maybe three narrators, but I just want a narrator reading - nothing more.
