I went into the Stormlight Archive expecting epic fantasy, what I got was science, superheroes, "Epic hero moments" and a lot of empty space. 7/10 will read the last book.

I am agreeing with the pod here at around 1215. I enjoyed book 1 the most. The further into the series I got, the less I enjoyed the story and (especially new) characters. I've read the Trilogy two (maybe two/half?) times and have not changed my opinion between/after readings.

I'm through four books in the series so far and for me I've liked: Morning Star - the 3rd book the most, then Golden Son - 2nd, then Red Rising - 3rd (1st in series), then Iron Gold - 4th and 4th in series. This book didn't work for me but I'm giving it a pass as the first three in the series were so good. Book #5 is on my TBR, but I'm struggling with finding motivation to continue the series as book #4 killed my motivation. I might try Book #5 in the series on audiobook to see if it rekindles my interest in continuing the series. I'd like to enjoy this series again and hope it regains form after book 4.

On the inconsistency of Murtagh's power. You guys are right that it feels weird but this can mostly be chalked up to Murtagh being an unreliable narrator. He himself is unaware of the full extent of his own powers and their actual limitations let alone having a good grasp of other's abilities. In this capacity Thorn is a better judge of danger and, as you noticed, takes many moments to call it as it is. That said, I still have trouble reconciling the fact he struggles to fight his "old friend" unarmed in the second half.
@spiritteddy9393
@spiritteddy9393 6 күн бұрын
I strongly feel the first half of the book is important. It is where we really get to know Murtagh and Thorn. They are stripped of their unnatural augmentations and still healing mentally now that they have separated from Galbatorix. Their training as rider and dragon was deliberately incomplete in skill and completely lacking in the development of their minds and morals. Despite this Murtagh and Thorn fit naturally into their roles as keepers of the peace and eliminators of threats. Roles that Eragon and Saphira cannot fulfill shackled by the responsibilities they had to take on over the course of the first series. This is also important because this is the first time rider and dragon are shown performing these duties within any of the books.

With Discworld while you can read them in any order and generally understand them, read them as standalones and (with one exception) be fine becouse they have contained plots, there are actually written chronologically (and the world change during the series) and there are also subseries that follow the same ensamble of characters. Firstly *the wizards* books. They are following the wizards from the Unseen University in the city of Ankh-Morpork (mostly Rincewind) and their adventures, often takes reader into far away and new places across the Disc, good for worldbuilding, but I have to say generally not my favorites, lots of Sworld & Sorcery parodies in it (starts with the very 1st discworld book - *Colour of magic* , the second book - *the Light fantastic* is actually the only book you really *CAN'T read as a standalone* and understand it (at least from what I know), because it directly follows the CoM and they're both basically one book in two; most of the people (including me, didn't actually manage to get trhough it, although I was much younger, maybe I would like it beter now) *generally don't recommend starting here* because it's mostly straight parody and doesn't really represent well what the discworld became, people sometimes become dissapointed and wtite of the whole discworld which is shame). Then they are *the witches* - they're about the witches from the small Kingdom of Lancre. The main character is Esmeralda "Granny" Weatherwax who is accompained by Gytha "Nanny" Ogg, Magrat Garlick and later on by Agnes Nitt. They are mostly inspired by various stories - Shakespeare, traditional fairy tales, phantom of the opera, vampires stories etc. (generally recommended starting point is the *Wyrd sisters*, although technically it is Equal rites (I actually started there and really loved it, but it's mostly kinda more of a prequel, doesn't follow the general witches themes, characters are also, with one major exception, different and it really has a different vibe overall, on top of that Equal rites is the 3rd discworld book so still very early and even if I love it it does show). *Death* series is centered ghenerally around Death but he mostly shares the books with other characters - first by his apprentice Mort, then mostly by his granddaughter Susan Sto Helit and others. Generally have a good worldbuilding for the nature of the Discworld and how it work (the starting point is *Mort* - probably the most recommended earliest starting point (as the 4th discworld book), really doesn't need to be read in order (lots of people start with the *Hogfather* for example), although it probably adds some emotional weight if you read Mort before Soul music, otherwise it's nice to read them in order (seeing Susan and Death relationship evolving etc.), but they are, at least for me, probably the best at reading like a standalone with the exception of the actual standalones). Then there's *the watch* (starting point is *Guards! Guards!* one of the most recommended starting point and there are deffinitely reasons for that, it's amazing, would recommend, even though for me it's still the weakest watch book - they just get better and better, the watch is one of those subseries that I would really recommend *reading in order* (even better if you actually intersperse them with some of the standalones and Moist books (in the places they are in the chronological order) because of various cameos but it's not necessary, just fun when you see the protagonist from different perspectives and the developement of the city, but I will come back to it later), because of Vimes character arc, the Night watch is generally considered to be the best watch book if not even the best discworld book, but it's also the book I really wouldn't recommend reading first - it can be done and you should understand it, it has contained plot and everything, people actually did it and liked it - but the weight is so much bigger if you actually follow Vimes' arc though multiple watch books beforehand). *Moist of Lipwig* trilogy is one of the latest discworld series (starting point is *Going Postal* there are various cameos from the watch series (and also from the Truth, which is a standalone novel), but you can easily understan it without knowing anythink about it and it's far enough that it is probably the best book in the starting points (maybe with an exception of the Tiffany Aching starting point - the Wee Free Men - but that is targeted for somewhat younger audience, it's YA, but adults also really like it); the same can be said for Making Money, however I would like to stress to *not read* the *Raising steam* (the last book in the trilogy) before reading at least *all of the Moist and the watch books* it is the penultimate discworld book and it basically ends not only the Moist's plotline but also the watch and basically the whole Ankh-Morpork situated stories and also culmination of dwarf-plotline (which was mostly in the watch books), you can sadly kinda feel that Pratchett was not on his best there, but it is still the finale and best to be read like that). *Tiffany Aching* series is the only YA series in the whole Discworld and also paradoxically probably one of the darkest ones. It follows young girl Tiffany Aching on her journey to become the witch and it's very much a coming of age story. Tiffany regulary interacts with characters from the witch books (mainly Granny and Nanny but also others), but with the exception of the last two books (I Shall Wear Midnight and The Shepherd's Crown) can be read without reading any of the witches books (and expecially the last, I Shall Wear Midnight have some nice cameos some have been waiting for a long time but with the last book - *DON'T READ THE LAST BOOK WITHOUT READING ALL OF THE WITCHES BOOKS FIRST!!!* - it's the last Discworld book and you *need* to know the witches characters for it to land). It was actually published post mortum and while the main story is finished you can see that the book as a whole wasn't really finished - it's kinda unpolished, but it's the epilog for the whole discworld and also for some characters in particular. (The starting point is Wee Free Men). Then they are the *standalones* - they might be sometimes kinda shoehorned into some subseriers named as "The Ancient Civilizations" and "Industial Revolution" (often with Moist books) in some reading charts, but they are very much a standalones, some with some cameos from the other books. Books like *Small Gods* (really good comentary on religion, really good worldbuilding, expetially in relation to how the Discworld gods function ,still quite early in the series but far enought for Pratchett to have securedly found his footing by then), *The Truth* (the start of the printing press in Ankh-Morpork coresponding with detective mystery, thsi time not from the view of the Watch, but young aristocratic son William de Word and his companions, watch characters cameos are there and the characters from this book have cameos in both Moist and watch books (and also in one another satndalone called the Monstrous Regiment) so it's nice to actually combine the watch, Moist and the Truth with the Monstous Regiment and just read them as one series, but it is also really good on its own) and *The Monstrous Regiment* (girl named Polly Perks in a wartorn country named Borogravia disguise herself as a boy to find her brother, then things get somewhat weider... basically Mulan story but with a twist, really good, really, as someone called it, gender and also has another nice commentary on religion and war, with Going Postal and Wee Free Men probably one of the best books in the starting points cathegory, cameos from watch and the Truth) are also really good as starting point. There are some others - Pyramids and The Moving Pictures which I either didn't read or read really long time ago and don't remember much. I don't think many people recommend them as starting points, but if you're really into movies history you will probably like Moving Pictures, it's also a book that firstly introduce quite an improtant character in wizard series so if you read them, you might like to add it there, but it's not really necessary. In the end I would like to say that Discworld gets generally even better on the reread and you often catch thinks you've missed before. On top of that if you read the books by it's subseries and not the chronological order (which was, at leats for me, much more comfortable when I've read them at first, it's kind of easier to follow the same characters reather then jumping from one to another), you can also catch lots of various bigger and smaller cameos in the books as you get to know characters from the other series, which makes your day brighter when you realize. Well here I conclude my Discworld propaganda by saying that in generall you can just pick a random book you like the anotation of and you'll be okay, but if you don't like it it's good to know you can just try another subseries before you give up on the whole Discworld.

I don't think the trailer gives that much away. It's 8 episodes (approx 10 hours) reduced to 4 minutes. The charge on Eregion looks pretty early in the multiple episode siege/battle. Moving mercury a centimeter wouldn't mess up the earth that badly. Actually, the solar system is unstable, and eventually all the planets would fly away - but the sun isn't going to last long enough for that to happen, lol (sun only has like 4 billion years or so left before it collapses to a white dwarf, before that it will swell up to a red-giant phase and swallow the earth). Anyway, over time the planets arranged themselves into 'resonant' orbits which are more stable, but they didn't necessarily start that way. It's pretty interesting.

Since you didn't watch season 1's final episode, let me sum up -- they made a volcano happen by flooding the base of it through a hole - EXACTLY LIKE the baking soda volcano from a grade school science fair - and then this is what makes Mordor. Did the Big Brain Geniuses at Amazon THINK a volcano works like the grade school science fair model in the most literal way imaginable??? Or did they know it DIDN'T but thought that was the coolest thing to put in a "Lord of the Rings" show? Either way, ponder that Tolkien is in THESE hands.

@colin4836
@colin4836 15 күн бұрын
@@joebobhenrybob2000 that’s actually exactly how a volcano works. But that didn’t even happen in the finale for one, it was episode 6, so your recap needs a little work. “Violent volcanic eruptions occur in large part because water is involved. The water is dissolved in the magma. The magma rises to the surfaces, the water makes bubbles that can turn to steam and the steam and water expand so rapidly that they basically blow the magma apart. That stuff piles up near a central vent and that’s what makes big volcanoes. If that water is in a confined area, like a bottleneck, there’s going to be a steam eruption - we call it a phreatomagmatic eruption. We see that happening in Hawaii all the time where lava flows into the ocean, and some of the lava can get blown around if the water gets trapped under it.” - Jeffrey Carson, Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Syracuse University, whose area of expertise is volcanic activity.

@@quirkyjoeAnimated this might have some spoilers idk it’s all been released publicly so don’t read if you don’t want to know what’s been stated about the second season so far…. the showrunners stated that the stranger will be named this season. There’s also another wizard (who is called the dark wizard) confirmed for season two played by cirian hinds who leads the “cultists.” Tolkien at one point stated that he believed the two blue wizards went to the east and that one of them fell to darkness and became a leader of magic cults. All of these things point to them adapting this storyline as it lines up almost perfectly in canon. On top of that Tolkien stated that while he may have traveled to middle earth pre TA - Gandalf never went east. This would also be before Saruman (what many people are assuming is the dark wizard of this season) fell to the dark side so to speak so that wouldn’t make sense for him to be the other dark wizard only to come back as good and then back to bad again… I understand why they might change that for this adaptation but I don’t believe they will. We will see soon though!! I trust the showrunners will pull this off. Their plans for all of this have been the same since before season 1 so I’m excited to see what they have in store!

@@colin4836 Thanks! Appreciate the spoiler warning and the info. I always saw the blue wizards as a pair but I am open to wherever it goes. I would also be fine if this IS Gandalf under another name, testing the water before returning to Middle Earth in another form at the start of the Third Age (with no real memory of previous experiences). And I would be fine if these were other test run wizards sent out long before the five familiar Istari. It is pretty good that they have the 50 hours of story pretty much planned out already. But it also makes me think they will save big conclusion stuff for each storyline for season five, and it's nice to speculate what stories the Stranger might experience in the next three seasons and to what kind of satisfying end. Excited for him to duet with Tommy Bombs too, if that happens.

This series is a shitstain on the brilliancy that lies within Tolkien's work. Not only poorly written and bad characters, but the whole inaccuracy of the Rings and Mithril mess makes it bad 'fan'fiction at best. Though I would use the term fan loosely, no fan would or could fuck things up as much as this. And I can state this having read enough Lotr fanfiction. The characters that exist within Tolkien's work get butchered and dumbed down to such a degree it is sad to see, males get neutered and the women but particularly the 'wise' Galadriel gets turned into a raving ***. There are better fan trailers of the Silmarillion out there than this piece of asswipe. Here I'll even prove it: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hbubibyLv82baKM.htmlsi=xKCLjTKG5Jy2o3pX

Amazon doesnt own the rights to the Simarillion.. they have permission to use some peices but they have chopped up different stories and events and characters to attempt to make this sort of Frankenstein second age story. Acouple notable issues from fans of Middle Earth. 1) Hobbits dont arrive till the third age. To fans Harfoots are an example of lack of ingenuity in the writers room. 2) They get Galadriel all wrong.. She was born before the first age before the Sun and the Moon and is an Eldar ... so by the time the Rings of power(in the second age) she was ANCIENT and WISE and POWERFUL with magic... not a grumpy female warrior. but she has a weird romace with Sauron and doesnt perceieve his evil... Also she is married by the second age so where is Celeborn?? Another ancient and powerful Elf... 3) The stranger is clearly Gandalf... He shoudnt arrive until the third age. So again the writers are doing a horrible job they are just reusing the Gandalf/Hobbit dynamic. Also a whole age before either arrive in Middle Earth. 4) Writers attempt to make Orks round characters with some sort of culture/ autonomy.. they are just evil violent monsters.. always have been in Middle Earth. Thats like making Storm troopers the good guys with great aim. 5) Time is too condensed in the show: Elves live thousands of years and these events take place in very different time periods. Thats why making a show all about Elves doesnt make sense they move too slow.. unless you have great writers who use time jumps, and flashbacks effectively... which they dont. 6) Middle Earth is grand, idealistic, and full of poise and order... Tolkien did not write this world and history with grey characters deceptive plot lines... Middle Earth has good vs evil and the vivid specticle that is this beautiful English mythology. The writers and producers of Rings of Power seem focused on the wrong things. 7) The dialogue is weak, and the events do set up for great dialogue... There is a reason the Simarillion reads like a history text book and not like a novel. 8) They need to use more beautiful locations and less green screen. using big locations touched up with vfx would make the wrold more real and big. wide Aerial shots and more locations are needed. 9) Political agenda casting is wack and distracting. We dont need any women power moments or, ethnic diversity. It should be an English mythology full of caucasion looking characters but alas.. inclusivity over staying true to the ip and the authors vision.

1) "The beginning of Hobbits lies far back in the Elder Days that are now lost and forgotten. Only the Elves still preserve any records of that vanished time, and their traditions are concerned almost entirely with their own history, in which Men appear seldom and Hobbits are not mentioned at all.” (J.R.R. Tolkien, Lord of the Rings, Fellowship of the Rings, "Concerning Hobbits"). 2) According to the books Galadriel was not at all above the desire for vengeance, she was of "amazon disposition", fought against Feanor's Noldor in Alqualonde and watched the Dwarves of Khazad-dum "with the eye of a commander" (Unfinished Tales). The only magical thing about Galadriel is Nenya. And her mirror. Nenya was gifted to her by Celebrimbor and knowbody knows who made the mirror. Apart from that Tolkien never mentioned her using magic. The love story with Sauron is not weird, it's a fantastic reference to Osse and Uinen. Celeborn is back in season 2. 3) „That Olórin (aka Gandalf), as was possible for one of the Maiar, had already visited Middle-earth and had become acquainted not only with the Sindarin Elves and others deeper in Middle-earth, but also with Men, is likely, but nothing is (has yet been) said of this.“ (J.R.R. Tolkien, The Peoples of Middle-earth - Part 2, Chapter XIII, "Last Writings, p.381") 4) Wrong. Tolkien very much struggled with the concept of Orcs and the question of the possibility for redemption. Check out "HOME, Morgoth's Ring" 5) The great advantage of the compression of the timeline is that now, for the first time, the vast majority of casual fans will get to know all the big events of the Second Age in one coherent story, without Men and Dwarves dying all the time. That's the reason why the compression of the timeline has the blessing of the Tolkien Estate. As long as Celebrimbor does not meet Elendil and Isildur there is no damage done. 6) Middle-earth is full of grey characters: Osse, Feanor, Thingol, Maedhros, Turin, Saruman, Denethor, Boromir, just to name a few. And Sauron was called "Sauron the Deceiver" for a reason. Especially in the Second Age deceiving Elves and Men was his main strategy. 7) If you do not want lots of new dialogues (there are barely any ones in the books), don't watch a Second Age show. Many of the dialogues lines are actually great, like e.g. "I have been awake since before the breaking of the first silence" 8. Most of the sets are real. Only the wide Arial shots of e.g. Eregion, Numenor are CGI. 9. Galadriel is clearly described in the books as a power women and warrior, and Middle-earth includes Asia and Africa. Elves and Men awoke in Asia, not in Europe, the Elves in the area of modern day Iraq, Men even further to the east. Galadriel's grandfather e.g. is an Asian immigrant. 1/3 of all the Elves did not even go into the West. They are the Avari. Nobody knows what happened to them and where they went. Arondir could very well be a descendent from Avari Elves from Tolkien's "Hot Countries" aka Africa. Disa might also be from a southern House of Dwarves. Only the modern day mixture of Hobbits does not make any sense.

@@anni.68 The fact you ate them up on every point just shows that these people hate for the sake of hating and have probably never picked up a book in their lives. Great job, you left no crumbs.

@@anni.68 2.) I would contest that Nenya wasn't the only magical thing about Galadriel. She lived for a long time in Doriath with Thingol and his wife Melia, a maia, who she was friends with and from whom she learned a lot. She had skills that humans would consider "magic". The mirror of Galadriel was made by Galadriel. But otherwise good rebuttal. Also, Tolkien himself had different versions of most of the stories and apart from The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings that were published in his lifetime, there it no single canon that can be set in stone. Galadriel is one of the characters that is probably the most subject to different interpretations even by Tolkien himself. Also, shifting of some timelines is necessary to tell a story that spans millennia in a concise way.

@@akaha001 Yes, Galadriel's description in the books gave even Christopher Tolkien a headache 😀 In the Silmarillion it is told that Melian the Maia taught Galadriel "much lore and wisdom about Middle-earth", not magic. And she taught her how to make Lembas :) Melian was one of the Ainur, her "magic" was an integral part of her being. She could not teach somebody else how to become a lower rank angel. Which does not mean that Galadriel could not use any magic. Finrod, Glorfindel and Elrond used magic, and Galadriel was the greatest of the Noldor (except Feanor). Therefore I assume that she had the ability to use magic, too, even if Tolkien never mentioned it. Can you tell me any source where it is said that Galadriel made the mirror herself? That would be great.

Ngl kinda hurt hering Wera's rhyrhm of war takes, as its easily my favorite book. "We have enough of Kaladin"....well he is basically the main character of stormlight. But also having a lot of a chatacter in of itself isn't a bad thing. It's how it's done. And ironically enough, i feel like Oathbringer does this the worst. Even in WOK and WOR, that have a ton of Kaladin. They dont just throw Dalinar and Shallan to the wayside. Not even remotely. But the same can't be said for OB. I think the best way to describe OB is that it is Dalinar at his absolute best..but its Kal and Shallan at their absolute worst. And as amazing as the later half of OB is for me personally, it doesn't make up for the dryness of damn near every chapter with Kal and Shallan. Hell, even in ROW where we get the least Dalinar. The parts we do have are meaningful (everything with Ishar, odium, etc). And we get Navani basically as a replacement, and she's awesome. In terms of Kaladins' mental health, I've heard the same thing a million times before now, as im sure everyone in the community has. So i won't rehash everything. All ill say is thats really a preference baded thing i guess. Personally i think a lot of people fatigue with Kals depression in ROW is actually due to the lack of progress in OB.

interesting take and I hear you. Personally, I liked Shallan the most in Oathbringer (her jokes actually landed too haha) and I thought that Kaladin's failure to self actualise was a very interesting contrast to Dalinar's ultimate victory. Maybe I'm not understanding but when you say that in OB Kal and Shallan are "at their absolute worst" do you mean in the story (theyre hitting rock bottom) or structurally (their segments are not interesting)? Anyways, I'm GLAD we disagree! That's what creates the best discussions <3 Excited for W&T!
