In this episode, we took the Buick that was pulled out of a junkyard in Texas and gave it a 6.0 LS upgrade. We put the myth of the $800 LS Swap to the test.

To me, Buick has always been the superior styling American car whether it’s from the 20s or from 1970. Well, maybe not after the 90s lol

Thank you for the birthday wishes. I can definitely do a whole work up on how to get it to work, but it’s all in the LS forums and I just only had to do a few little things different here and there. That’s the cool thing about the LS is getting it all to work with the original computer is nothing new and it’s as budget as budget can be these days.

Nice, I used to have a 2013 Alto Gray PPV. I loved that car. I dig thise those Buicks too. If I was doing an LQ4/9 in a heavy car like that with only a 3spd and a taller rear for lower highway rpms. I would seriously consider swapping the 317 heads for some 706/862s, they tend to make less than 10hp less than 243/799s and they make 10-20lb/ft more tq for around 1500-1800rpms in the mid range according to Richard Holdner's tests. The compression will be up there a bit depending on the headgasket thickness, around 11.3:1 with std 0.051"s with flattops or 11.0:1 with LS9 0.060"s. Would definatly make it snappier, probably the reason why an early mechanical throttle LM7 or L33 in a halfton with a 60E doesn't feel much less snappy than an LQ4 with an 80e. The 71.5cc truck heads are the worst performing factory heads by far. With flattops, a set of 821/823s are probably the only head with enough extra top end HP to make it worth giving up the TQ that the small chamber 61.5cc heads make compared to the minimal hp increase the 243/799/241/853 heads give you, eapecially with dished pistons, having the flattops can make the differences a little more merky if you went with a little more stall, cam, rear gear. The NBS/tbss intake is the ticket as well if it will fit underhood. I have a 2004 6spd GTO that I am putting together an LQ4 block for, I have been contemplating various combinations for it. Considering the weight, wide gears and 3.46 axle. I have been thinking I will use flattops or like L96/L99 pistons with the little valve reliefs, genIV rods, 0.027" headgaskets, the original 241s milled a touch with the ports touched up or 821/823s. Originally wanted to do a 402-408 stroker kit but, the prices in the last 3-4 years have gone crazy, even for the cheaper kits, from like $1200-1400 to $2400-2700 now. Seems like going with oversized hyperetetics anywhere from 4"-4.065", GenIV rods and a stock crank is the most sensible route that should still be capable of around 550-600hp at the crank depending on the cam, heads, intake, compression and displacement with longtubes and supporting mods. Considering the Summit Single plane 240/252 .569/.569 106, possibibly with 1.8 or 1.85 rockers to get the lift up to .604-.620 at the valve, unless I had something ground that has a tight LSA, enough P-V depending if I use catherdrial or Rec port heads, 11.0-11.6:1 compression, a 238/242 .595/.595 106+3 might be what I would have custom ground, basically a sloppy stage 3 with a tight LSA, the Summit is only like $299 so it would probably work pretty well, even if I had to flycut with rec ports a tiny bit with an Isky tool for P-V. If I didn't use that block I have considered buying an L8T block, borimg it out to 4.125", stroking it to 4.125" to make a 441ci and figuring out how to run it with port injection with GenV heads or 821/823 heada and LS style ECU or just running all GenV with DI and everything if that becomes easier to do depending whats easiest to piece together and make run. Even the new Ford Godzilla 7.3s are becoming intriguing, $1500 for a new bare block, $600 each for new assembled heads, $200 for a used crank, firged rods and pistons avaliable, 452ci 0.030" over with a 4.250" piston, tons of parta and tuning solutions are becoming more common all the time and compared to $2700 for a new 6.6L L8T block the Godzilla is a deal and both can handle 1500-2000hp with boost. With the cost of living and inflation anything beyond ultra budget is damn near impossible for a regular guy anymore though so those dreams aren't happenning anytime soon.

Suffice to say I may already have a set of 823 heads, Edelbrock cross ram intake, and some plans with some Chinese hairdryers after the 500 in.³ big block stuffed in the square body🤫

My 80 regal is still rocking a 69 Buick 350, that I installed 22 years ago. My uncle was a Buick guy so before he passed he insisted that I take everything to keep that engine going including 4 sets of melling oil pump kits lol
@LunarOutlawsGarage
@LunarOutlawsGarage Ай бұрын
Nope, never did. I think the only car manufacturer I’ve ever beat up on their engines is Ford, because their engines are junk. I might’ve said that Buick engine that was in there was so worn out I can throw a cat between the main bearings, but I wouldn’t have called it junk. In fact up until the beginning of this year, my plan was to finish building at 4:55. I have in the basement unfortunately unfortunately the prices of parts and times negative gain over an LS.
@LunarOutlawsGarage
@LunarOutlawsGarage Ай бұрын
Now all that said, I guarantee you there’s not an old Buick engine that’s going to be able to handle the crap. I’m about to do with it after we’re done with the square body. Hint: Twins

Sorry you feel that way, but the cost of rebuilding a bbb is absurd these days. I put this back on the road, and I’m restoring my square body (with a 500ci BBC) for less then building a 455 that can only take half the hp of an LS. It is easy to spend other people’s money, you don’t need to announce your departure. God bless 🤙
