On day 11 we finally made our way to Qaqortoq on our Island Princess Iceland and Greenland cruise. We had never visited Greenland before, and we were really looking forward to experiencing a new country, culture, and people! The morning started off very foggy and we were lucky that tenders were still running. We had a quick breakfast and then headed down to explore Qaqortoq, Greenland. The town really impressed us, the people were so friendly and welcoming. It truly was an incredible experience, and we explored many areas of the town independently. The weather turned out to be incredible and we couldn’t believe what happened as a result. Back on Island Princess we got to witness an emergency in port, we had a front row seat to icebergs during dinner. In the evening, we left the Princess Theater a little confused and ended on our evening on deck 15 as we could see the Northern Lights. The whole day had to have been one of the most epic ports and experiences of our lives to date.

Island Princess is part of Princess Cruises' fleet and was launched in 2003. It belongs to the Coral-class of ships and has been a popular choice for travellers seeking a cruise experience with a balance of comfort and luxury. Princess Cruises, in general, is known for offering a range of amenities and services to make passengers' experiences enjoyable. The ship offers various entertainment options, including live performances, musicals, and themed events. Island Princess provides a variety of cabins and suites to cater to different preferences and budgets.
We are Tom and Dom and we experienced our first cruise on the MSC Virtuosa during her UK staycation cruises in 2021. We are relatively new to cruising, however we can now say we are officially hooked.
Our mission is provide a fair and balanced review of our travels. We look at the types of food that is available onboard, from main dining rooms, room service, buffets and pool side snacks. We include menus for each of cruises so that we can share the selection of drinks and meals that are available. Entertainment onboard a cruise ship is important to us and we enjoy theatre production shows, live music, quizzes and game shows. We love to explore different ports and destinations and enjoy sharing tips and tricks so that you can make the most of each port. We often explore ports independently but also book excursions that are interesting to us.

Great video! Hoping to go on island princess in October so great to see what she’s like! Love how you show the full menus every time. I can’t eat fish/ seafood or mushrooms, which do seem to appear a lot on other cruise lines we’ve been on!, so great to see the options! You’ve got a a new subscriber! Many thanks!

Interesting to see the contrasts with our single small ship in port a month earlier in terms of the busyness of the port. How lucky you were to see the lights, I am so envious of you. Unfortunately we still had the 24 hours of daylight so too much light for us.

Thanks for watching. Quite busy in the lower town but strangely most people didn’t stray too far to explore. We really weren’t expecting to see the lights given the time of year.

We had a port day in Qaqortoq in 2022 - nice to re-experience it via your video. Yes, the grocery store made quite an impression. The one we visited had a sushi counter that would rival one in a big city. We also visited the same tourist office. We somehow missed the rock wall with carvings, so nice to see it here. I'm sorry you didn't get into the church - Scandinavian in feeling, of course, but more ornate than you might expect - maybe you had a chance to visit a church on your next port stop?

We are LOVING these in-depth reviews - especially with a 10-night Med cruise coming up on Island Princess. Very good point about dinner service cutting into evening entertainment time. Do you think we'd do better with a 6:30 pm dinner time rather than a 7:00 time? Also would hate to feel rushed coming back in from port! Thanks, fellas.

Thanks so much! If you feel you would have enough time to be ready for dinner by 6.30 then that certainly would make the evening easier.

Really enjoying this series guys. We have a couple of questions if you could help us. We are considering booking a Princess Cruise and getting the Princess Plus drinks package. We weren't sure whether the gratuities on the drinks were included in the package or whether you get an additional bill at the end. Our second question relates to our Black Country roots (West Bromwich). We are trying to pinpoint Tom's accent. Lisa says Sedgley and I reckon Old Hill. Who is closest? 😄

Haha thank you so much for watching. The gratuities are included as part of Princess Plus. Tom is from the home of IKEA. Wonderful Wednesbury 🤣

One thing is not to visit Qaqortoq Museum… but why didn’t you even mention it? Saving 10 dollars on the museum ticket - the price of 3 cucumbers in Greenland - you and your viewers really missed out. In another scale it’s like going to Paris, talk about culture - but also act like The Louvre doesn’t exist. And it does take acting skills. Since the main part of the museum is the biggest building and in all black at the main square. Qaqortoq Museum is btw also the oldest building in all of South Greenland, so the beautiful timber-building itself is worth a visit from the inside. And don’t even get me starter on the museums whaleruss and whale teeths, the magnificient paintings, the tragic story of M/S Hans Hedtoft (the Greenlandic and Danish Titanic), the room of Knud Rasmussen (biggest polar explorer in Greenland) and the room of Charles Lindbergh (yes, THE aviator)… I noticed more than 95 % of KZfaqrs that go to Qaqortoq doesn’t visit or even mention Qaqortoq Museum. My prejudice is that KZfaqrs are cheap and superficial. Why am I wrong? 😐 I hope you at least the next day/in the next town saw the museum in Nanortalik? Not just because that museum in all it’s many buildings also have a toilet heh - but so you at least saw some classic Greenlandic artifacts like National costumes, tupilacs etc. Nanortalik Museum is the number 6th recommondation to do off all activities in all of Greenland. Please tell me you didn’t just save another 10 dollars? 🙏

Thank you for your comment. We only had a short amount of time in each port and we value talking to real local people. We spent a good amount of time exploring the local community and talking to a local gentleman near the Spar. I’m not sure why you mention cost as that isn’t a deciding factor. We absolutely plan on visiting Greenland again and as you appear to be so knowledgeable we would happily contact you for recommendations before we travel. By the way the museum was closed when we went there.

So you made a point of not buying any animal products while at shore in Greenland and then you go back to your cruise ship and eat rack of lamb???

Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. It’s a good point. In this case we were talking about eating animals that are a product of hunting rather than that of farming.

Ka kor dok is actually how its said with a guttural sound coming from the lower throat. I live in Qaqortoq! As to the Tannery: Seal skin is a bi-product of hunting for meat! For five thousand years this way of life has been passed down. Hunting and fishing is how they supplement their food table. Most Greenlanders do this! Stop calling it controversial! It's a way of life here! Change how you speak about countries where the indigenous do what they've been doing for centuries to survive arctic condtions.
@TomandDomTravel
@TomandDomTravel 2 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching and taking the time to reply. We will certainly be practicing our pronunciation. We said it’s Controversial to wear skins for people from the UK (like all furs) and this was followed by an explanation that all of the seal is used and it is a part of the Greenlandic subsistence way of life. We also evidenced this showing the label attached to products. In all we hope the video show how much we loved getting the chance to visit Greenland and experiencing such a wonderful part of the world.

@@TomandDomTravel It looked like you had a great time here! I was probably tour guiding the tannery that day! ;) :) I do city tours and the tannery. ;) :) It's just that when you use certain types of words, it turns into other things. Greenland has had to really fight to keep their way of life intact. I'm always amazed when tourist make comments that they heard through places like Greenpiece. We try to educate everyone while enjoying this beautiful country. ;) :)
