For Political intrigue you'll love DS9, it's got more political intrigue than you can handle. For Courtroom drama you're gonna love TNG. "Lawyer" Picard is a trope that never gets old.

Nichelle Nichols spoke about her frustration with scenes getting cut and her character being ignored and placed the blame on the network who feared her character wouldn't/wasn't well-received in a certain market, ie. the South. NBC even refused to offer her a full contract and tried to buy out her contract in order to keep her off the air. When her agent called her one day in that first season to tell her, she asked what it meant and her agent simply told her, "Gene [Roddenberry] says don't worry." "What does that mean?" she replied and the agent just reiterated, "Gene says he'll take care of it; don't worry and just show up to work like normal." She did just that and found nothing had changed. What she didn't know at the time is that Roddenberry hired her as a guest start instead, the salary of which was higher than her recurring supporting contract. Plus, because Matt Jeffries had designed the Communications station to be right behind the Captain's chair (logical since the Captain needed to have that station in close proximity in a crisis), it meant that Uhura was always in almost every shot of Kirk in the command chair. As a guest star, she was paid for every moment on screen even if it was just her elbow visible behind Shatner. In this manner, Nichelle made more money than she had been and Roddenberry bled the executives for far, far more money than they'd have had to pay out if they'd just let her earlier contract stand. Not only did he keep her on the show, Roddenberry made them pay for their cowardly attempt to keep her off-screen. By the end of the season, she was given a regular supporting role contract like Doohan or Takei.

"It's not what we thought it was. It was more." I don't think any TV show could expect a better compliment than that. It's been so much fun watching you guys come along for the Star Trek ride and watch you seeing this beloved show through fresh eyes. Well done, gentlemen. Keep it up!

Just remember this was budget squeezed series, made weekly. They can't stop, or they will miss their delivery dates. The fact that so many of the episodes are so good, speaks to the hard work of all involved. I'm so glad you loved it, all the different series have great episodes, even the animated version. This is why I watch you guys -- I've seen these episodes 100+ times and I never came close to fully appreciating the dramatic reveal of the woman's blindness in that episode. You made me see how special it was. Shatner's reaction is perfection. (FYI -- "Takei" rhymes with "toupee.")

With just the original cast, you get to look forward to 3 films that are masterpieces, 2 that are very very good, and 1 that is such a train wreck that it’s insanely rewatchable.

It occurred to me that you may not have realized…if you continue to watch in actual release order there will come a point where you are watching TNG and DS9 at the same time. DS9 first aired in January of 93 and TNG ended in May of 94. And again an overlap with Voyager first airing in January of 95 and DS9 ending in June of 99. I double dog dare you guys to watch both each week like we did in the real world 😁

Regarding what you would have liked to see more of...TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise will satisfy you on pretty much all counts. And the movies - we can't forget the movies. I am so looking forward to more content from you!

For those who've been with you for the past 79 episodes, this discussion was a genuine delight. It was fascinating to hear your comments about wishing there had been an Uhura-centered episode, or a Sulu-centered one. The sad thing is that they diminished as the "Big Three" came to dominate over the run of the series. We gradually lost those little scenes where we got to see them away from their posts on the bridge, like Uhura hanging out with Sulu in the botany lab ("Man Trap"), Uhura playfully teasing Spock in the rec room ("Charlie X"), or Yeoman Rand trying to fix Charlie X up with a date in the same episode, I think as you revisit the first season you'll be pleasantly surprised to see the greater depth that the crew got (including guest helmsmen like Bailey, Stiles, Riley, etc.) With gratitude for a year of great insight, wit and charm.

I hear you Alex & Josh with your list of "I'd like to see...." and being spoiler-free all I can do is smile & say keep watching the shows, TAS, TNG, DS9, etc. & movies. I think your persistence will be rewarded. :-)

A lot of people say the 2nd season was the best but I think the later part of the 1st season is the peak. Episodes like "City of the Edge of Forever" and others show the series hitting it's stride.

Regarding Uhura. There was supposedly a Uhura heavy episode that never got filmed but was proposed and scripted. It was called, "Portrait in Black and White". But pushback from the network due to it's subject matter meant it couldn't get filmed.

The hole/gape you feel after finishing TOS, I get, but it's also another series that's so easy to just pop on in the background as your work, clean, do chores, etc. Trek is never too far!

Grew up loving this series. Even watching these thru the 70s it many times seemed so much better then other sci-fi of the time.

There's this old saying (among mathematicians, I believe) that if you fire an infinite number of bullets at an infinite number of targets, eventually you'll hit Beethoven. Most of the things you'd like to see again show up will show up... eventually. You might have to wait some five hundred episodes, but you'll get there. It was a good run, I wonder if you'll be able to go through all those Episodes (777 and counting - plus TOS, 11 movies and Short treks ).

It's funny how as you addressed your favorite aspects of the show, such as more political intrigue and star fleet's inner workings, I would immediately think of specific TNG episodes. That's gonna be a wild ride!

TNG did get remastered effects but it only really enhanced the quality of the existing shots. This was a hard thing to do and extremely expensive which is why DS9 and Voyager didn't get remastered in this way I think.

Star Trek TOS started when I was in Junior High and then High School. I was there from night one. And from what you say you liked most about TOS and what you will like to see in TNG .... You are going to Blown Away X's 1000. Politics, Romulans, Klingons and their Cultures in Depth. Star Fleet, The Borg ... And of course Q and Data! You're going to have so much to explore and discuss. TNG actually enhanced my Life!

Of course, the great thing is because the original series had so many classic episodes, it is immensely re-watchable. You can revisit a TOS episode in the future and it will be just as thrilling, but now it will seem more like meeting up with an old friend for some fun reminiscing, rather than meeting a new and mysterious acquaintance. I can honestly say having watched some episodes more than I can count, my favorites never get old.

Something important to remember about the fuzzy-looking planets-from-space that we see in the original FX in TOS. It wasn't that the technology didn't exist to make the planets more detailed; they could have done that if they'd wanted to. This is how planets *actually* *looked* in photos of telescopic views. (By this time we'd had some orbiters around Mars, but they'd only ever sent B&W photos.) The Voyager missions of 1977-1986 were our first look at how planets really appeared close-up, and they changed SF TV views forever.

I would like to see your reaction to a British show from the sixties, The Prisoner. If nothing else check out the first episode, it gives you the basic premise. For the era it gives an interesting comment on society and the role of the government. The show is about a spy “forced” into retirement.

Good to hear what you want to see more of in Star Trek. The Next Generation, and Deep Space 9 series does exactly what you want. You learn more about the Federation, Star Fleet, and other races. Two of the best episodes of TNG are court room style stories. The Klingons get fleshed out a lot in later TNG, and DS9 episodes because of the character Worf. While DS9 explore the Ferengi, Cardasian, and Bajorin people. TNG, and DS9 also over lap with there seasons. The 90s were a golden age of Star Trek.

Political drama? Oh, you'll love a lot of DS9 then.

Completely agree with your take on the original effects. I have long said that adding new effects took away from the show in that we do not get to see just what those hard working special effects crew were able to do with no computers or high definition cameras. With just a shoestring budget, they had to build models from scratch, using opticals, lighting, and a whole bunch of tricks that have long been forgotten. When you consider that this was done before the ground breaking effects of 2001: A Space Odyssey, a movie with a huge budget, it just makes those original TOS effects so much more special.

I am very excited for you to go into TNG, because there is another TNG Review Show on KZfaq, but they rip almost every Episode to pieces, so i hope to see more of your positivity with TNG! (If you like it that is)

Oh yeah, the TNG remaster is great. You can see the drywall screws holding the super science stuff together.

I just finished Stat Trek Continues after reading all the recommendations here.. I highly recommend it as it fills the gaps between the show and the movies with an amazing finale.

If there is one thing that I think is great about modern streaming shows is that an episode can be as long or as short as it needs to be to tell the story. No more having to fit it into an exact time. Not all shows take advantage of this though.

You guys should definitely watch Star Trek Continues, a fan-made show of unbelievable quality with great fan actors portraying the original roles, with James Doohan’s own son, Chris, playing the role of scotty. They duplicated the sets, the lighting, AND the quality storytelling that made it great. It’s supposed to “finish” the rest of the 5-year mission, and actually gives the series a proper finale that flows perfectly right into Star Trek:The Motion Picture. You’ll be impressed. There are some actual guest stars you will recognize!

When you mention about never again having the feel of 60's era Trek and about a sequel episode and how you'd like to have seen more of the "Mirror, Mirror" episode and its characters......You two really should jump ahead to Star Trek Continues. It really is well-done, respectful, and true to the spirit and feel of the original series, down to special effects and camera angles as well as storylines. Once you get past the jarring effect of seeing other actors in the iconic roles, it truly does feel like you are watching lost episodes from the 60s, completing the Enterprise's 5 yr mission, with the last episode leading us into the Motion Picture.

You’ll get most of what you are wishing for in TAS, the TOS movies and TNG. The TOS movies expand the universe a lot, and this is built on by TNG.

"Let's get the hell out of here" was very risque for TV of the time.

17:45 - "The Vulcan Academy Murders" and "The IDIC Epidemic" - two wonderful Star Trek stories and they have a lot of Spock's parents and Vulcan.

Around the time of Next Gen, DS9, Voyager, I remember reading that George Takei was rallying for a Sulu-centered series where he was the captain of his own ship. I would have loved this, but the producers blackballed it...maybe because Takei was such an outspoken critic of Shatner, etc ? Just a guess. At any rate, a lost opportunity.

That final scene in, "The Squire of Gothos", where Trelane is arguing with his parents. Mom and dad want Trelane to come inside and Trelane wants to continue to play with his pets. I recall the father saying, "humans are superior to us - they have feelings". If I remember this correctly then it's the first time I've ever heard an alien recognize, and respect, a unique quality in humanity.

At some point, I'd like to see you guys review some of the fan-made TOS films. ST Continues and ST: New Voyages are the two most prominent ones. ST: Exeter was surprisingly different and good too. These are very much like the 4th season we never got.

You discussed how the cast bought into the premise of the show. No one was more committed to fan perception than James Dothan (Scotty). A director was once setting up a shot, and instructed Doohan to push a certain button. Doohan refused, declaring that if he pushed that particular button it would “blow up the ship”. After some back and forth and lots of tension, the director gave in. I believe this story was in one of David Gerrold’s books about the making of Star Trek (he wrote The Trouble with Tribbles episode).

A friend of mine and I will occasionally, when appropriate, yell "I'M Captain Kirk!!" to each other.

It was a lot of fun guys. There's still some great stories in the other shows. TOS definitely is like lightning in a bottle due to the era it was made in. The other shows are cool in their own right. DS9 is a personal favorite of mine, hope you can get to it at some point. It has some great writing and a much more interconnected and arc driven episodes, plus many great characters. ✌️

No, Roger C. Carmel was never supposed to play Cyrano Jones. According to David Gerrold's book, "The Trouble with Tribbles" (which includes earlier versions of the script), Cyrano was always named Cyrano; he was not Harry Mudd. Indeed, Gerrold got a script note about whether Cyrano was too similar to Harry, but they decided to just roll with it. Also, "I, Mudd" was only 5 episodes before "Tribbles", so a return might have been difficult to work into the latter episode. Ironically, Gerrold actually did a bit of script-doctor work on "I, Mudd", although he says the only bit of his work that survived was the idea of 500 identical robots. But yes, more Harry Mudd would have been cool.

Great job guys. As far as the JJ Abrams films, I hated them at first until I watched the first one again and realized it was one of the best written Star Trek stories out there, giving us an alternate timeline without messing up the canon we all love. This also means potentially more content with the new timeline.

Based on certain comments you made, now I'm looking forward even more to your reactions to Star Trek 2 and 3.

I'm mixed on the effects. Some episodes, such as Errand of Mercy and Tomorrow is Yesterday, were completely absent in the original showing. There were no Klingon ships present in the first season and when the Enterprise went around the sun, all we saw was the model in space just shaking. Digitally adding to these kinds of stories definitely added to the experience. Other episodes didn't need them at all. The original Amoeba in The Immunity Syndrome completely blew away the new digital effects. Sometimes, I agree with Alex and Josh. Jumping back and forth between computerized effects and old style effects can take you out of the story.

Fun fact: The phrase that Roddenberry used to sell the show to the network was "Wagon Train to the stars". Wagon Train was a famous Western TV series about, well, about a wagon train heading West. They never arrived at their destination because that would've ended the show, and there were always problems and crises to deal with.

The animated series gives Uhura a spotlight episode, which you might like!

If you haven't seen the 60's Outer Limits series, you'd be missing out. So many subsequent scifi/horror films draw from that series

I binge-watched your Star Trek reactions over the past couple of weeks, and I am delighted to hear you're going to continue on to the films and other series. You guys are, quite simply, fun to hang out with and I'm looking forward to seeing how the first few seasons of TNG stack up against TOS in your estimation.

If you want more 60s episodes, definitely check out Star Trek Continues. They did an unbelievable job of replicating the look, feel, story, everything. The first one is a sequel to Who Mourns for Adonais, featuring the same actor who played Apollo. Sure some of the acting isn't great because it's a fan production, but most of it's fine and there are numerous guest appearances of real actors such as John de Lancie, Lou Ferrigno. If TAS was the fourth year, Continues is the fifth year and explains the background of The Motion Picture.

23:20 Scotty gets his Extra Episode (and a damn good one) in TNG. Relics (S6E4). The classic line is revisted: "It is green." (The lack of contraction is intentional and you'll understand when you get there.)

The CGI vs Original effects have always been a Mixed Bag for me. The Ultimate example being "Doomsday Machine" in which the original model of the Cone Ship looked better, but the CGI was able to do the choreography of the Space Battle much better. Also Next Generation & Deep Space 9 have great episodes where they explore the politics & cultures of aliens or Explore the Interworkings of Star Fleet, and a tone of great character work

Yes the glowing face groaning did scare the crap out of me in 1967 I was 7 also the Beloc puppet too I ran and turned off the tv before he showed up at the end of the credits when I could. No remotes in those days lol

You guys need to watch the fan series "Star Trek Continues".

And when you get on a bit and TNG kicks off and goes towards making their own movies, but TOS seems to never stop. The interweaving continues as the "modern" series starts overlapping. Living in Europe back in the days when the different series was bought in by different channels, so the timelines wasn't always how you wanted. And the movies was a lottery, sometimes the movies was out far before compared to the TV shows. One reason why I have all the series and movies before Enterprise on disc. And I've stacked them up in the right order and plowed through it a couple of times.

Definitely watch the 60s Batman series, it's every bit as fun and funny as the film

Those episodes you would like to see more of are revisited in future series. Mirror, Mirror type is used again in DS9, and Kahn was used in one of the TOS movies as well as the second reboot Star Trek film. Villians in TNG (Q) return in both DS9 and Voyager. Nurse Chapel (aka Majel Barrett aka Mrs. Roddenberry) plays Number One (TOS pilot), Lwaxana Troi (DS9&TNG), and the voice of most onboard computer interfaces throughout the series from 1966 to 2023. A younger character version is also in the 2022 series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Many things carry over in following series/movies (inc the Gorn).

In the 'What do we want to see more of?' everything you said and asked for is in TNG .... :)and In the 'Which supporting actor deserved more?' a must read novel is Uhura's Song that came out in 1985...

I like Star Trek TOS because it's a future I would like to live in - brightly lit, optimistic and Sixties futuristic. But it's a future that has to be worked for. Every character has a back story, whether it's fleshed out or implied. Every character is there on the bridge because of merit. The later movies has the crew ossified in their positions. JJ Abrams has the crew graduate from Star Fleet Academy together and, instantly, they have their places on the Enterprise. In a realistic universe, it takes time to make starship captain. The person selected has to show formidable abilities over his or her peers (this is a plot device in some episodes in TOS and there's only so many starships). Where do those who aren't selected go? Sometimes, they become incompetent commodores and admirals (another plot device). The later movies and shows don't seem to recognize this but the writers in the Sixties understood it well since WWII was still a living memory.

One thing to keep in mind is that color TV was pretty new and few of us had one. No one in my neighborhood did, so I didn't see the series in color until I was an adult and watching the reruns.

TOS is amazing. Even the camp is rewatchable

The Mudd Episode you wanted a sequel got one, but only in short story form. James Blish who did the novelizations of all the TV episodes wanted to do a book featuring all three Mudd stories, but he couldn't get the rights to the animated episode. Rather than scrap the book or only have two stories, he wrote a sequel to Mudd's Women, an while it's been 15+ years since I read it, I still remember it as just as hilarious as the real episodes.

Believe it or not, there is a Clint Eastwood movie that you need to see. The Dirty Harry movie introduced a character actor named Andy Robinson. He played his character so well that it influenced his later job offerings, but it also laid a solid foundation for his work on Deep Space Nine. You should consider checking it out, as I think it helped with his Star Trek character's credibility as a docile tailor.

Thank you for everything, and if I may be so bold, if you ever want to revisit the Sixties, and even want to try a show which was DELIBERATELY, for artistic reasons, all black and white, I can not recommend enough the original Outer Limits. Too often mixed up with memories of The Twilight Zone, unfairly dismissed as "that monster of the week" show, OL was a gutsy show, a weird mix of scientific optimism and eerie horror, that was, much like ST: TOS, a very mixed bag, with some episodes tedious or exasperating, but others that were undying classics. Trek had a huge impact on me, but not before OL gave me a sense of wonder.

Harry Mudd was a great 60s comedic character.

Oh man, hearing a particular part of this video, there's a particular moment in the films that I can't wait for you to see. And yes, i'm not gonna say anything more until then.

At the risk of sounding like I'm bullying you, you're NOT done with the 60's yet, OR that unique, 60's Trek TV look. Why? Because Desilu studios ALSO produced a little series called MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE , and used many of the same innovative lighting and camera techniques as well as many of the same cast and crew (in fact, when Trek was finally cancelled, Leonard Nimoy's pals at Desilu gave him the first shot at replacing Martin Landau when he left the M: I series, taking on the role of Paris, man of a thousand faces for a couple of seasons). So while it's NOT Star Trek, and it IS a different kind of show, there are a TON of overlaps with the (then) experimental camera work and lighting, with cameos from Shatner, Takei, and dozens of the same bit players doing excellent work as guest stars. The early Mission: Impossible series can seem VERY dated after the high-octane conversion into the Tom Cruise, non-stop-sprinting, blockbuster territory, but there's still so much to love. If you want another dip into that "groovy", quasi-psycheadelic era, look no further than Mission: Impossible, The Original Series. Hope you find the time and enthusiasm someday, and thanks for the investment of time and all the great reactions/ reviews!!!

I’ve watched your TNG reactions and can’t remember which version you’re watching, but for the most part, the remastered effects (as seen in the bluray or HD streaming versions) are the original effects, just re-scanned and re-composited. Effects that were done on videotape (phasers, force fields, etc) were redone, but with the goal of looking like the originals. With TOS it’s absolutely worth watching the original effects. With TNG, you want the remasters instead.

It has been great following you through the first series, looking forward to more and seeing the perspective of new fans on old content for me.

Leonard Nimoy famously wrote a book called I AM NOT SPOCK, trying to show all the work that went into that character, and how he the actor was different from the character he played. It did not go over well, since fans took the title to mean that he was disrepecting the thing they all loved and also what hed given Nimoy his success. Many years later, he wrote a book called I AM SPOCK, detailing how he had made peace with and embraced the character and its legacy. That said, there's no way around the fact that all of the regular actors on this show could never get away from their characters til their dying days, for better and for worse. I would like to request that you guys react to some of the other work of these actors, before and after the show. My two suggestions... Leonard Nimoy's last gig before taking on the STAR TREK series was the lead guest star on the long-running Western GUNSMOKE, s11e29--"The Treasure of John Walking Fox". As for Shatner, the two most obvious requests are his two episodes of THE TWILIGHT ZONE... but I'm requesting a 1962 movie called THE INTRUDER. Don't look up anything about it, just trust me, it's a great movie, and... maybe not what you expected from our honorable hero...

Star Trek: Enterprise Series with Scott Bakula as captain is a great series to explore origin stories on how the Federation started and why they set limitations like the prime directive. Also if you want to explore politics this series delves into how they encountered all these new species and the issues they encounter trying to create treaty's with them. This show ran about the same length as TOS but had a much more realistic ship and technology. Looks more like a submarine or ocean ship inside. It is understandable since it is a prequel to TOS. TNG and Deep Space 9 ran much longer. Of the 2 actual political drama happens more on DS9 space station with constant traffic of species every episode. Think LAX with aliens.
