After being blown off the beach the week before, we decided to clean up and give beach camping on South Padre Island another try. With good weather in the forecast, we knew this time things would go right.

We've had our LTV Sprinter Van since 2017 and love how easy it is to pack up and move about. We can be up and out in 20 minutes if needed. We spent a week on the same beach (South Padre Island - Edwin King Park) in 2022, and of course got stuck as well, but knowing that it was easy to head out quickly should the need arise. With the size of the van it is easy to find boondocking sites. Fire any questions you have our way. We'd be happy to answer them.

That's so kind, thank you! Do you find that you have to move a lot more due to the smaller water capacity? Currently we can stretch our water consumption such that we can go about 2 weeks without dumping the tanks.

@@HomeARoam that is definitely a consideration. If we're careful we can get 5 or 6 days without emptying black and grey tanks and refilling the fresh tank. It helps when there are washrooms and showers (or a lake) near by. We're retired but just call ourselves "old millennials" so showering is optional. 🤣

We have a sprinter Roadtrek. Like the guys just said, 5 minutes, it’s great. Even at campgrounds. You don’t have a stinky slinky to put away. Unplug and drive away. Really nice when you wake up to rain and it’s moving day.

yeah the first ones we had needed to be taped in place so that they wouldn't slide around, but the bigger ones hold in place much better.

We have a van. It takes virtually no time to set up. If the spot is relatively flat you just park it, open the slider and pull out your chairs. Had a travel trailer previously. The van is so much easier!!

Thanks for the input. That's what we're thinking. We also like the idea of being able to move between the driver's seat and habitat without getting out of the vehicle if there's bad weather.

On our slide awning we have tied two awning deflappers on to a rope. Feed the rope under the slide and connect the deflappers to both ends of the awning. Adjust the length of rope so the deflappers are not pulling down on the awning too much

Yes, it's super fine sand that blows really easily. This was filmed in January, so hopefully you'll get even better weather come April.

I don't think I have ever seen Mel look so tired at the beginning of this episode. I loved seeing the BBQ segments, you guys always make me hungry. p.s., I don't thing the local chamber of commerce will be referring potential visitors to these last couple episodes LOL. Did the bigger balls help? Stay safe and enjoy the moments... your sharing is always a happy time for me.

I can see now that that side of the gulf has a lot more rough weather than our side here. Our house is about 7 miles from the shore at Bayport, fl' We just cleaned out the last of the sand we collected from South Padre Island about a week ago.

We're STILL cleaning out sand. Every time we move more falls out of the tiny nooks and crannies of the rig 😅 We're going to be doing a very deep clean when we get it back to BC.

My brother has a Winnebago Travato with a Ram Sprinter diesel. He has had multiple problems with the DEF system on the diesel. This seems to be a common problem. Research this issue. Maybe stick with gas.

Thanks! Yes we've read and heard a lot about emissions troubles with modern diesel engines. Right now we're focusing mostly on Ford Transit and Ram Promaster (gas engine) vans.

Done it every which way and it just depends on what you plan to do. If you are just going to travel and see lots of places without staying for more than a day or two the van is a good way to go. If you are going to stay in one place for a week or two at a time then of course the truck and trailer is the way to go. Packing stuff away in a van can be time consuming because of the limited space so things get packed on top of one another and sometimes you have to unpack a bunch of stuff to get to what it is you need. So I would say it's six of one half dozen of the other.

Thanks for the feedback. We suppose there is no such thing as a perfect rig. Just a good rig for a particular situation or travel style.

Hi, you asked about setup time for a van. Well, my wife and I have a van. It takes maybe five minutes to put it in park and level it with some blocks. If we put out the mat and chairs, add another 5 minutes. We like to keep our camp setup very simple. Hope it didn't get too windy.
@HomeARoam
@HomeARoam 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for answering our question! Yeah, we keep a pretty simple setup with the trailer, but it just takes a while to get everything settled. Glad to confirm that a van would be faster. Cheers!

We are toughening out winter here in Ontario but are hoping to spend a few months next winter in Texas. Would you recommend Isla Blanca?
@HomeARoam
@HomeARoam 4 ай бұрын
Isla Blanca is a big, well kept campground with a nice big beach and boardwalk, too. They have full hookups, some of the sites are a bit close together, but not all of them. We'll have a full tour of the campground coming up in a future episode, but yes we would recommend them. The monthly rates make it very reasonable compared to the nightly rate.

Van or trailer is really a choice of space and convenience. With a van you will have to mob and de-mob every time you want to drive anywhere. Over a week you’re probably not saving any time.
