People forget, our "Golden generation" included Danny Mills, Matthew Upson, Wayne Bridge, Gary Nevil, Darius Vassel, Emil Heskey, Theo Walcott, Trevor Sinclair, Paul Robinson and Peter Crouch... We had a golden midfield and 3/4 quality defenders, one who refused to play with the other. Add to that, a pair of-on their day world class-but injury prone strikers. A "golden generation" which failed to qualify for Euro 2008.

The biggest problem with England is keeping the ball throughout the years. Even when you look back at our good sides in 1990, 1996, 1998. We haven't been able to have the highest possesion against the best sides. The best teams, like Germany, Brazil, Argentina, France, Spain etc don't have that problem. That's why we don't win tournaments. I remember even when we played Holland in 1996 and beat them 4-1 we still didn't have the highest possesion. That come back to bite us since. We had low possesion against Spain and won by a penalty shootout in 1996. We were over rated.

Cole should've won at least 30-50 caps instead of only 15. Hoddle should've picked him in '98, Keegan in '00 and I always thought Sven should've picked him in '02 as he was on fire in the Prem after leaving Utd for Blackburn, but watching England's run-up to that tournament, I can see why Vassell was picked. England have spent more money on football than any other country in history, and yet has 1 World Cup from before the moon landing, whilst kids from shanty towns in Brazil have 5. The concept of that England side being a golden generation is a handicap that needs to die. Instead of acting obtuse and refusing to understand what everyone's talking about, reflect your own desire for understanding onto yourself and comprehend what's being said. You've missed the point. In this context we are talking about a group of talented individuals underachieving, Spain and Brazil are not being analyzed here. But FWIW Brazil had a golden generation in 82-86 and failed to realize its potential at the WC. This about underachievement, not success.

@@cockoffgewgle4993 ever actually watched those games? England were the best team there and the final was a case of West Germany clinging on, not the other way around. Did they get the rub of the green. Maybe, but they didn’t rob anyone. Argentina in 78 really did rob teams, could have been different in 86 as well. I don’t think anyone is undermining how good those teams were.

Tbf, with the world cup in 2002, England were unlucky to get Brazil in the quarter finals. Brazil were hands down the best team in that tournament. But England might have been the second best. The only team R9 didn't score against was England. England lost 2-1 to them. Germany had an easy run to the final and got beat 2-0. It doesn't matter at all now. England weren't good enough to win. But I guarantee England would have got to the final if they had Germany's run and would have been favourites if they faced Germany. Who only 9 months earlier England had beat 5-1 in Germany's own home ground. Just unlucky to get draw against Brazil in the quarter finals. Frankly unlucky that freak freekick went in as well.

England had a period of world class players in every position apart from GK. These players all won or would win the Champions League. Unfortunately we had a truly awful manager in Sven who refused to budge from 442 even though we had no left winger and he was afraid to drop any big names. If that England team had a half decent manager we would have won something.

100% agree. You can still have a golden generation that underachieves. Greece won the Euros in 2004 when Portugal had an outstanding array of talent. I defy anyone to tell me that, Figo, Deco, Pinto, Costa and a super young CR7 were not in the greatest Portugal XI and did not have a golden generation in that era.

It was definitely a golden generation. The managers responsibility is to ensure you get the best out of the your players by ensuring the right tactics rather than tryna fit all the best players in without thinking whether they compliment each other. Playing a player like Carrick in the midfield dropping other of the star CMs would of made the team way more balanced.
